2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Has Something For Everyone (If You Can Find One) Mar 27, 2022

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in such a wide variety of trims, powertrains and even sizes, there’s one for almost every want and need. From basic to luxurious, the Grand Cherokee covers all the bases. There’s even an audiophile McIntosh sound system. No wonder Jeep has sold over 7,000,000 of them over the years. Tom Voelk checks out a V6 Overland 4x4 with the Off-Road Package with a tow rating of 6,200 pounds and finds it to be a good choice for families that want to explore the wilderness in comfort.

2022 Cadillac CT5 V Blackwing Is The Brand At Its Best Mar 20, 2022

For years, Cadillac V cars were a curiosity. Hotrod performance from the luxury brand was unexpected fun. But the Cadillac CT5 V-Series Blackwing is another best-in-class performer and it’s lofty performance is no longer an anomaly. It begs the question- Is Cadillac a better performance brand than a luxury marque? How does it compare to the CT4 V Blackwing? Does it compete with Audi RS5, BMW M5, Alfa Romeo Giulia Qudrafoglio, and Mercedes AMG C 63 S? Tom Voelk answers those questions and more. He checks out a well-optioned CT5 V Blackwing in Metallic Rift paint equipped with a 6-speed manual.

2022 Audi RS e-tron GT Is A Powerful Reason To Switch To An Electric Vehicle. Mar 16, 2022

Switching from gasoline to electric is an easy decision if you’re shopping the 2022 Audi e-tron GT. And the high-performance RS is an even easier sell, if you have the money. It looks great, has terrific range, excellent fast charging speed and looks, well, like an Audi. It’s based on the same architecture as Porsche’s Taycan and shares some of its goodness. But the e-tron GT has its own appeal and character. It competes with Tesla Model S, Lucid Air and Mercedes EQS. Tom Voelk takes a look at a fully loaded RS e-tron GT with the Year One package and finds a lot to like. Now to make more money…

The Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid Is The Perfect Electrified SUV. For Some. Mar 13, 2022

Pure electric vehicles don’t work for everyone. The Ford Escape plug-in hybrid does. The concept is simple enough, charge the 14.4 kWH battery and it’s fully electric for 37 miles. After that it defaults to a regular hybrid with an EPA rated average of 40 MPG. And the Escape PHEV is a useful crossover that does the chores well. Fun to drive too. But if you want all-wheel drive with your plug-in…. maybe visit a Toyota dealership for a RAV4 Prime or get Escape’s fancy sister, the Corsair Grand Touring.

Tom Voelk takes a look at a fully loaded Titanium model to find out if it really goes 37 miles on a charge and what the real fuel economy is. And while Ford calls the 4thgeneration Escape, I see it as the 3rd gen (the “2nd generation” is a heavy mid-cycle refresh IMHO).

2023 Toyota Sequoia Is Reborn As A Hybrid SUV Jan 30, 2022

Because there’s a new Tundra pickup, it only makes sense that Toyota is rolling out an all-new Sequoia. The 2023 model replaces the second-generation that’s as old as its namesake. And it’s a hybrid now! The only powertrain is the i-Force Max twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor sandwiched in between it and the 10-speed transmission. With 3-rows it’ll carry up to eight adults (though word is the 2nd row does not slide fore and after and headroom in the 3rd row is reduced). The back row of the new Sequoia features a sliding feature so there’s a choice of more cargo room or maximum legroom. There are five trim levels including the new top-dog Capstone model plus an off-road oriented TRD Pro. Tom Voelk gives you a preview of the large roomy SUV that shares its architecture with Tundra, Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 600. No pricing or fuel economy ratings have been announced yet.

The 2022 Infiniti QX60 SUV Is Exactly What The Brand Needs Jan 30, 2022

No doubt, the 2022 Infiniti QX60 is a big improvement over the outgoing model. A 9-speed transmission replaces the continuously variable unit. The user interface is a big step forward. The design, inside and out is fresh and up to date. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned Autograph model and finds that Infiniti’s new approach is successful. Mostly. Looking at you big shiny things in back. And yes, it will haul the whole family.

Ford’s 2022 Bronco Raptor Is Real, And REALLY Capable. Jan 30, 2022

The wait is finally over! Ford has spilled the details on the new Bronco Raptor that will be available to order in March of 2022. The Bronco Raptor is based on the 4-door model but heavily modified. There’s over 400 horsepower from the twin turbo V6 EcoBoost engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, standard 37-inch tires and a beefed-up… well, everything is toughened, improved and reinforced. Tom Voelk has all the details on the Ford Bronco Raptor and why you might want one. Especially if you want to catch some air.

    2022 Cadillac CT4 V Blackwing Is Black Art Performance Jan 30, 2022

The 2022 Cadillac CT4 V Blackwing is what happens when a wallflower sedan gets infused with superpowers. The twin-turbo V6 belts out 472 horsepower. The Brembo brakes will stop a train. And when it’s not slicing up a track, the Blackwing is a docile grocery getter. All of that and it’s available with one of the best manual 6-speed transmissions on the planet (or choose a 10-speed automatic). Tom Voelk checks out a well-equipped V Blackwing on an empty backroad and finds General Motors doesn’t get credit for it’s excellent chassis tuning.

2022 Lexus ES 300h F Sport Review. Lots Of Show, Not As Much Go. Jan 30, 2022

The 2022 Lexus ES 300h F Sport sedan is designed to appeal to younger and more diverse buyers. And it’s a handsome hybrid outside and in. Without sacrificing any Lexus polish, it keeps the brand’s promise of comfort and quietness. Gets 44 miles to the gallon too. Just don’t think it’ll pin you against the seat. Automotive specialist Tom Voelk checks out a well-equipped model in a week all-wheel drive would be handy. Or snow tires at the very least.

The All-Wheel Drive Volkswagen ID.4 Is Chill In The Snow Jan 30, 2022

Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric vehicle is now available with all-wheel drive and it’s amazing how much difference an extra motor can make. It adds much more power and extra traction, perfect for a winter snow storm that hit Seattle on Christmas day. Automotive specialist Tom Voelk takes a Pro S AWD out onto the slick hilly streets of the Emerald City to see if an EV can handle the Pacific Northwest’s nasty mix of ice and snow. And don’t forget the ID.4 isn’t just the most affordable AWD EV, it’s still eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit.

How Ford Built Maverick So You Can Make It Uniquely Yours Jan 14, 2022

Ford’s new Maverick compact pickup is turning out to be a smash hit. One big reason? Flexibility. The engineers designed the affordable trucklette from the ground up to be easily customized by owners. Want to install an air compressor or LED lighting in the bed. Easy. Need to haul bikes but can’t afford an expensive rack? Ford has easy-to-follow instructions on how to build one on a budget. And it tows up to two tons. With respect to Paul Simon, there must be 50 ways to hack your Maverick. Tom Voelk offers a deep dive on what the designers were thinking, and some of the DIY ideas the engineers have come up with.

The New Lexus Interface Is Better In Every Way. Here’s Why… Jan 10, 2022

For years, the user interface that Lexus offered depended on an unloved trackpad without any kind of touchscreen. It was… well, not good. So Toyota Connected Services engineers started from scratch and designed an all-new version in-house from it’s Plano, Texas headquarters . The result is unimaginatively called Lexus Interface, but manages to be a much better experience. A voice activated system much like Siri and Google Assistant, there isn’t really much of a home screen. The much-loathed trackpad is gone. Tom Voelk takes a deep dive with Lexus’ Chris Pedregon to show you how the new system improves on the old one. And while it’s not perfect right now, over the air update will make it better and better.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain Is Bold Statement In An SUV Filled World Jan 07, 2022

Many car buyers have shifted to SUVs to haul the family. Looking to stand out from the pack? The Mercedes E450 All-Terrain is the sleekest luxury sport ute money can buy. Okay, it’s a station wagon. But it offers all the utility of an SUV in a package that’s easier to load. And, it runs with a mild hybrid system. Tom Voelk checks out a well-equipped 2021 model and ponders the question- when did station wagons become the radical choice?

The Best Cars And Trucks Of 2021. And Tom Turns It Up To 11. Jan 01, 2022

2021 was a great year for vehicles (and kind of a lousy one for many of us humans). Automotive specialist Tom Voelk looks at the positive and picks the best cars, trucks and SUVs from what he’s driven over the past year. His choice for Vehicle of the Year can be had for as little as $21,500. So there are some surprises in this list. As a This Is Spinal Tap fan, Tom turns it up to 11. Maybe 12. This year, the unveiling comes from Hawaii’s Big Island. Because, why not?

The 2022 Porsche GTS Sport Turismo EV Is Performance Anyone Can Live With (Well… Those With Money) Dec 31, 2021

I’ve pushed the Porsche Taycan GTS sedan at Willow Spring International Raceway and learned that fade-free electric performance can be a truly beautiful thing. But how does this track monster behave in the real world? The GTS Sport Turismo gets the same street/track personality and adds a wagon-like rear to make performance driving practical. It’s the best of all worlds, if you have the disposable income for an EV that begins at around $135K. Tom Voelk zooms up it California’s famed Angeles Crest Highway and has a great time getting lost on the way to the track.

The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Is A Track Monster (And A Powerful Argument For Electrification) Dec 27, 2021

There are many good reasons for buying an electric vehicle. The most powerful one is desire. People will crave EVs when they make the driving experience better. The Porsche Taycan GTS is that car. It’s the perfect ambassador for performance lovers needing a grocery getter and a track tool without compromise. Comfortable for everyday driving, the GTS is happy to carve up Willow Springs International Raceway. That’s where Tom Voelk drives the sedan version (GTS is also available as the more practical Sport Turismo wagon). Don’t think EVs are ready for a punishing on the track? Taycan GTS proves the naysayers wrong.

The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Will Take You (And Your Dog) Further Into The Woods Dec 22, 2021

The Forester is the most popular model that Subaru sells. The new Wilderness edition should dial up the demand. It adds rugged trim, a little more ground clearance, a modified transmission and X-Mode, plus StarTex water resistant interior. Your dog will love it. Tom Voelk checks out a model with just one option (an engine skid plate) and finds it to be one of the best Subaru he’s driven. It’s not fast, but it will get you to the better hiking trails.

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos Is A Small Premium Package At A Premium Price Dec 10, 2021

When it comes to the compact SUV segment there’s a wide variety of choices. Maybe too many. Looking for something upscale but find the premium brands too spendy? Then the Volkswagen Taos might be for you. A foot shorter than big brother Tiguan, the cabin has nearly the same amount of space plus it has a polished driving dynamic. But understand it’s among the most expensive in class. Tom Voelk checks out a loaded SEL model with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 4MATIC Is Small, Roomy, And Premium Priced Dec 06, 2021

Mercedes-Benz has a lot of SUVs to choose from, the GLB is one of the smallest. Sharing an architecture with the sleeker GLA, the GLB 250 sports an upright design and the option of squeezing a third row into it. Available with front or 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it covers a lot of bases with loads of passenger and cargo room. But it is a Mercedes and buyers will be paying for that large three-pointed star on the grill. Tom Voelk checks out a modestly optioned GLB 250 4MATIC with the AMG Line trim package.

The Aston Martin DBX Is Go-Anywhere Luxury (And A True Aston) Dec 03, 2021

Aston Martin is all about giving discriminating buyers what they want. These days that means SUVs. The all-new 2021 DBX, the British marque’s first sport ute, goes from boardroom to twisty roads to trails with ease. The only problem will be, how will buyers appoint this bespoke machine with some 50 paint colors and dozens of leather hues? Tom Voelk checks out a version optioned up to the $223,000 level and thinks it might be worth it for the twin turbocharged V8 engine note alone.

The 2023 Ford Bronco DR Is The Ultimate Factory Desert Runner Nov 29, 2021

There’s a new Bronco direct from Ford but chances are you won’t be seeing it in the grocery store parking lot or even mingling with other Broncos on the trails. DR stands for desert runner and this race ready machine comes straight from ford with a Coyote 5.0-liter V8 engine that should make more than 400 horsepower, Multimatic Positional Selective DSSV Dampers and Multimatic safety cage. Fill it with gas and you can practically run the Baja 1000. With an estimated price starting in the mid $200,000s, it’s not for everyone. It doesn’t even have glass windows. Or doors. But the Bronco DR is ready to take on the toughest terrain.

The All-New 2023 Kia Sportage Gets More Room And New Style Nov 26, 2021

Kia has dropped the 5th generation Sportage details and it’s a big deal. Literally. It grows in size to be one of the roomiest in class. For those that venture off-road, there’s a new X-Pro model. Top models get Mercedes-like cockpit screens. And Kia is hinting there will be electrified models coming soon. Tom Voelk offers up a first look at the 2023 model that should hit Kia dealerships in the spring of 2023.

    The 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Is A Triple Threat. Maybe Quadruple. Nov 22, 2021

The 2022 Lexus NX 350 Points Toward The Brand's Future Nov 19, 2021

The 2022 Lexus NX might NOT look significantly different than the first generation, but there are huge changes under the skin. There are four available powertrains, loads of new safety tech, and the first application of the new Lexus Interface. That’s right, the unloved trackpad is gone! And for the first time, the NX is available as a plug-in hybrid, the 450h+ that happens to be the most powerful model. All of these changes point to the direction Lexus is going. Tom Voelk travels to Phoenix, AZ to check out the most popular model, the NX 350 Luxury.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Is A Techy Turbo Hybrid With New Skills Nov 08, 2021

Toyota has made a TRD Pro version of Tundra before, but the 2022 model gets a serious boost in tech and ability. For starters, it comes standard with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain with 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. It gets 2.5-inch diameter FOX internal bypass shocks, locking rear differential, Crawl Control and Multi Terrain Select drive modes. And it moves upmarket from the SR5 to the Limited trim with heated and vented digital camo seats. Tom Voelk checks it out at the Toyota event held outside of San Antonio, Texas.

    The All-New 2022 Toyota Tundra Really Is All-New (And There’s A Hybrid) Nov 07, 2021

Toyota’s Tundra has used the same architecture since 2006 and there’s only so far Kaizen, or continuous improvement, can go. The 2022 Tundra is completely new from the laser-welded fully boxed frame to two new powerplants. There’s a new 6.5 foot bed length too. Clearly it’s the best Tundra ever. How does it stack up to Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan. Tom Voelk travels to San Antonio, TX to drive it. Plus, a factory visit to see how the awesome frame is made.

EcoBoost Ford Maverick Delivers More Power To The People (Plus All-Wheel Drive) Nov 04, 2021

The 2022 Ford Maverick comes standard with a hybrid powertrain but many buyers will crave more power. That’s easily solved by going with the 2-liter EcoBoost powertrain, a turbocharged 4-cylinger pumping out 250 horsepower. If you want all-wheel drive and the ability to tow up to 2 tons, it’s the engine you need. Tom Voelk takes a closer look at the gas-only Maverick and takes an FX4 package off road.

2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid Pickup Is A David Taking On Goliath (But Not As Small As You Might Think) Nov 03, 2021

Like Bruce Lee, the all-new compact Ford Maverick pickup should be taken very seriously. Built on the same architecture as Bronco Sport, engineers lengthened the wheelbase 16 inches and gave it a 4 ½ foot FlexBed. And it all works, sometimes better than a bigger rig. Comfortable and practical, it’s the trucklette many didn’t know they needed. Available with a 250 horsepower EcoBoost 4-cylinder, the standard hybrid powertrain should see 40 MPG in city driving. Tom Voelk travels to Nashville, TN to drive both engines. This video focuses on the hybrid powertrain, the EcoBoost video will be up soon.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Takes on Big Boys Tahoe and Expedition Oct 31, 2021

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is a highly competitive and extremely capable SUV that can seat eight and tow 10,000 pounds. And there’s no need to move to the luxurious Grand Wagoneer to get a great looking cabin that’s comfortable. Plus, it off-roads like a Jeep. Just know all this goodness doesn’t come cheap. Tom Voelk takes a look at a Series II Wagoneer with a 5.7-liter V8 pumping out 392 horsepower, Quadra-Drive II 4WD and Quadra-Lift air suspension on both street and trail.

The SUV And Pickup Of The Year! The 2021 Mudfest Competition Picks The Best. Oct 27, 2021

The average new vehicle goes for over $42,000 these days. To help you buy the best one for you, the Northwest Automotive Press Association holds Mudfest, perhaps the best SUV, crossover and pickup competition in the US at The Ridge Motorsports Park. This is the 26th year it’s been held and there are 19 vehicles competing. Will Kia Telluride repeat it’s win? How does Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco stack up against each other? It’s all here, plus NWAPA members choose a Northwest Outdoor Activity Vehicle of the Year (and it’s kind of a surprise this time).

The 2022 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS Is Fast Access To Sun And Fun Oct 15, 2021

The Porsche 911 is available in coupe, cabriolet and Targa models. But the GTS version of the 992 has been missing in action. That wrong will be righted in early 2022 when the GTS returns to slot in perfectly between the Carrera S and Turbo S. A bit of a bargain (for a Porsche) it’s available in all three body styles with Porsche’s 8-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission or 7-speed manual. All but the Targa 4 can be had with rear and all-wheel drive. Can’t decide which one to buy? Collect them all! Tom Voelk travels to Porsche’s North American headquarters in Atlanta, GA to drive the Targa 4.

2022 Chevy Bolt EV Gets Updates And A Price Break (Now About That Battery Pack...) Oct 11, 2021

Chevy’s Bolt has always been a solid compact electric car with great range. The 2022 model fixes the details that bothered owners and kept some from buying in the first place. There’s a new front and back, more comfortable chairs and a dashboard that doesn’t look like it’s made from white Styrofoam. Plus there’s a substantial $5,500 price cut. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned 2LT model and touches on the recall of the LG Chem battery pack (this was shot long before the recall was announced).

Lexus Teammate Is A Techy Copilot (And Doesn’t Hog The Fries) Oct 08, 2021

Lexus is about to roll out its first handsfree driving technology called Teammate. It will debut on the Lexus LS 500h hybrid. Teammate advanced driving system uses cameras, radar, and lidar in combination with high resolution map data. Like General Motors’ Super Cruise and Ford’s Blue Cruise, it’s intended for highway use only. But Teammate is different and unlike a human co-pilot, it won’t take sips off your La Croix water. Tom Voelk travels to Plano, Texas to discover the tech with Paul Williamsen, Product Education Manager at Lexus College.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 Gets More Grrr (Plus The Enhancements Owners Wanted) Oct 04, 2021

There aren’t many affordable rear-drive sports coupes on the market so the 2022 Toyota GR 86 is a gift to enthusiasts. Generation two gets what the faithful asked for- added power, a more usable torque curve, improved manual shift action and a stiffened body structure. The 2-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine grows to 2.4-liters. The cabin gets spruced up too. Tom Voelk travels to the Monticello Motor Club in New York to check out the GR 86 on the track and the surrounding roads. Tom attended a manufacturer’s event for this review. As always, his opinions remain his own.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Surfs The Line Between Pickup And SUV Sep 30, 2021

First of all, Santa Cruz is not a pickup. Hyundai is adamant that it’s a Sport Adventure Vehicle designed for urban dwellers to get their chores done. With a 52-inch molded composite bed, it’s much smaller than Honda Ridgeline and easier to garage than any mid-sized pickup. Tom Voelk drives to (where else?) Santa Cruz, California to check out a turbocharged AWD Limited model to see if the Hyundai designers and engineers have found the perfect utility vehicle wave, or created another Subaru Baja.

On And Off Road With The New 2022 Nissan Frontier (And Yes, It's A Big Improvement) Sep 28, 2021

It looks better. It drives better. The 2022 mid-sized Frontier pickup is the first new one in some 16 years and the third generation should attract a lot more buyers. There are two beds, two cabs and for the first time there’s ProX model, a 4x2 version of the Pro4X. Tom Voelk heads to Sundance, Utah to drive Frontier on pavement and on rocky rutted roads to see if the V6 and new suspension are up to the task. Tom attended a press event for this story courtesy of Nissan. Opinions are of course his own.

Up Close And Personal With The New 2022 Nissan Frontier Design Sep 08, 2021

The new 2022 Nissan Frontier pickup is headed to dealerships now. Here's a serious look inside and out with Hiren Patel, the Project Lead Designer. He gives all sorts of insights to why the new Frontier looks they way it does, much of it is all about function. Tom Voelk stays out of his way and lets him describe the design process. This is part of a Nissan manufacture's event in Utah that Tom attended.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country Is One Sleek Sexy SUV (Okay, It's A Wagon, But That's A Good Thing). Sep 03, 2021

It can be argued that SUVs are essentially raised station wagons, or that wagons are sleek SUVs. Volvo’s V90 Cross Country splits the difference, an all-wheel drive wagon with more ground clearance than most. And it has a beautiful interior. Tom Voelk takes a 2021 model to Bend, Oregon for a family vacation. It might be the ultimate road trip vehicle. And if you need food recommendations in Bend, you’ve come to the right place.

    The 2021 McLaren GT Is A Practical Exotic (But That’s A Relative Thing…) Sep 01, 2021

The structure is carbon fiber. The twin-turbo V8 making 612 horsepower has only 3,384 pounds to move. It’s so exclusive you may never see one in person. A true canyon carver, the McLaren GT is the most practical car the company makes, versatile enough to haul a set of golf clubs. But no, it won’t replace your SUV or minivan. It remains a McLaren and that means it’s different from anything else out there. Tom Voelk checks out a 2021 model

V8-Powered Jeep Wrangler 392 Is A Gift To The Faithful (Those With Money At Least) Aug 27, 2021

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 392 pumps out 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. In other words, it can dust more than a few sports cars in a drag race. And the engine note is glorious. Yes, for the first time in nearly 40 years, there’s a V8 in a Wrangler (technically the Wrangler has only been around since 1986 so let’s graciously fold the CJ into the model line). Tom Voelk checks out this monster of a Wrangler and finds it’s all fun until the road turns twisty. Oh, and there’s fueling up too. Plus that price…

The 2022 Honda Civic Touring Is Brilliant. But How Does It Handle A 700 Mile Road Trip? Aug 25, 2021

Honda’s new 11th generation Civic is very good. How good? Tom Voelk takes a 2022 Civic Touring on a 700 mile weekend getaway to Walla Walla, Washington to check out the comfort, quietness, fuel efficiency and Bose Centerpoint audio system to see if it’s best-in-class (because Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra and Volkswagen Jetta want your money too). It’s a full look at the best Civic ever plus a little bit of Washington wine country thrown in for good measure.

All-New Lexus Interface Adds Tech (And Yes, It Ditches The Touchpad) Jul 30, 2021

Lexus makes some very desirable vehicles but has been criticized over its trackpad user interface. Starting with the 2022 NX, it all changes. The new Lexus Interface (no there’s no fancy name) eliminates the touchpad, it’s touchscreen only. It’s also adds casual voice recognition commands plus imbeds Amazon Music and Apple Music right into the system. And the NX will have phone-as-key technology that can be shared with up to 7 users. Tom Voelk talks to Toyota Connected leads Steve Basra and Charan Lota in Plano, Texas to find out what’s new, why it’s better and how the new user interface came to be.

Many automotive enthusiasts feel sports cars simply must have a manual transmission and the Porsche 718 GT4 comes standard with a very good six-speed. But the quickest way around a track is with the 7-speed dual-clutch Doppelkupplung gearbox. You may know it as the legendary PDK with eye-blink gear swaps. At least there’s no argument that the naturally aspirated 4-liter flat-6 Boxer engine making 414 horsepower sounds like a symphony. Tom Voelk checks out a Euro-spec 718 GT4 and says buy the one that works for you. And let’s not forget, some people find the gearing in the 6-speed manual to be little tall.

Tom Voelk takes a look at a 2021 mid-level Premium Plus model. NOTE- 2022 models will get a larger battery pack if you want extra EV range.

Everything has been rethought and improved including the transmission. Yes, the CVT is gone! Mated to the 3.5-liter V6 is a ZF 9-speed gearbox. But the best part for buyers is how Nissan offers up features and tech on affordable models, no need to buy the top trim to get a bird’s eye camera view system. Tom Voelk travels to Montana for a deep dive on a machine that should sere families well.

The 2022 model solves the space issue and goes on to add a city’s worth of style inside and out. In short, it’s much more competitive against Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Tom Voelk checks out a Limited Hybrid model in, where else? Tucson, AZ of course.

It's a step up from Civic, Corolla, Forte and Sentra and an alternative to GTI. Maybe even Audi A3, BMW 2-Series and Mercedes A-Class. Maybe.

The raked rear end joins similar silhouettes from Audi, BMW and Mercedes, just remember that Infiniti did it first with the FX35/45. Tom Voelk checks out a top trim Sensory model with standard all-wheel drive, the world’s first production variable compression engine and a steer by wire system.

Fortunately, Mercedes-Benz has a wide variety of 2-doors for people who want the intimacy of a true coupe (not the 4-door kind). The E 450 has received a significant refresh for 2021 and it’s way beyond some sheet metal tweaks. And Max Recline seats make it easier to sleep on the job. Tom Voelk checks out a 4WD Platinum model powered by a classic 5-liter V8.

Will Sorento finally get the love Telluride is seeing? Tom Voelk checks out an Aruba Green example that’s a good value at $43,760.

The Reimagined 2021 Chevy Trailblazer Is Better Than The Sum Of Its Parts Dec 30, 2020

The Trailblazer nameplate used to ride on a mid-sized truck based SUV. Chevrolet has brought it back as a compact crossover that rides on the same architecture as Buick’s Encore GX. Blasphemy? Lots of standard safety tech with Safety Shield 360 too. No doubt it will remain Nissan’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S. Tom Voelk looks at the kind of Rogue a lot of people will buy, a lower trim SV all-wheel drive model.

Available in both 718 Boxster and Cayman models, it gives up nothing for the driver that wants a good romp on a country backroad. Tom Voelk tests a well optioned Boxster that retails for $117K. You didn’t think it would be inexpensive did you?
