The patients were grouped into categories: good, moderate, or poor control of blood sugar. Then the patients’ physicians were given a test to determine their own levels of empathy. The doctors were grouped into categories: high, moderate, or low levels of empathy. The study compared the results to see if there was a correlation between the empathy of the doctor and the blood sugar control of his or her patient. Doctors who scored low in empathy had patients with a good blood sugar level 44% of the time.
