How can social media exposure lead to vicarious trauma? Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

Social media has been part of our daily digital lives for nearly two decades now, and while there are plenty of positives associated with it, there’s also an undeniably dark side.

Recent years have brought to light the sometimes traumatic work experience of social media moderators who have to review content that’s flagged as potentially harmful or offensive. Back in 2018, German directors Hans Block and Moritz Riesewick released a documentary called The Cleaners, which looked into just that and would go on to win several awards.

Where did the concept come from? What if you don't work in a high-exposure field? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Why is laughing contagious? Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

Have you ever found yourself laughing at a completely inappropriate moment? If so, you know just how embarrassing it can be. And it gets even worse when you make eye contact with someone else and they start laughing too. It then becomes twice as hard to stop.

Much like a strong flu, a powerful and genuine laugh can quickly spread to an entire group! When someone starts laughing spontaneously, their joy can be infectious, causing everyone at the table to laugh, sometimes without even knowing what started it.

Is there really a physical explanation behind it? It just always seems to happen at the worst times, doesn’t it? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What’s the worst kind of meat for the environment? Jul 06, 2024
    Show notes

According to The Telegraph, Brits eat an average of 220g of meat per day, which is almost double the global average. And agriculture is responsible for 12% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions according to government figures from 2022.

So it’s clear that our food consumption can have a real impact on the environment. While red meat is often labelled as the worst offender environmentally, in reality things aren’t quite so simple.

Can we agree on exactly what types of meat we mean when we say "red meat"? Do all red meats have the same environmental impact? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Why are some people clumsier than others? Jul 05, 2024
    Show notes

Do you consider yourself a clumsy person? For some of us, accidents just seem to happen more often than for others, despite our best efforts to be more attentive and focused.

We might drop and smash a glass in the kitchen or bump into things while walking along the street for example; and it can really get frustrating when that kind of thing happens over and over. And in actual fact, it’s not just down to bad luck; there is a reason for why some people are prone to moments of clumsiness than others.

Is it down to fatigue or inattention? Is being clumsy really a big deal? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What is Quantum medicine and is it a scam? Jul 04, 2024
    Show notes

In January 2024, the renowned French perfumery Guerlain is set to unveil a groundbreaking range of products inspired by quantum physics. Their marketing promises a revolutionary approach to skincare, stating: "After 20 years’ research, Guerlain has created Orchidée Impériale Gold Nobile, revealing a new cosmetic rejuvenation pathway for skin, born of quantum science.".

In layman’s terms, Guerlain claims to have unlocked the secret to anti-aging with its new quantum cream. However, the scientific community has raised concerns about the misuse of scientific terminology

How widespread is this phenomenon? So, what exactly is quantum medicine? Why is quantum physics part of this conversation? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Can chocolate really kill dogs? Jul 03, 2024
    Show notes

Have you ever been terrified of finding your dog munching on an Easter egg or chocolate treat during the holidays? It’s the kind of thing that can turn a wonderful occasion into a potential disaster. Of course chocolate is a delightful treat for us humans, but it can be extremely harmful to your furry friend, and even fatal in extreme cases.

They don’t process the components of cocoa like we do, especially theobromine and, to a lesser extent, caffeine. Those two substances stimulate your pet's central nervous system and heart muscles. The immediate effects include relaxed respiratory tract muscles and increased urine production. To put it simpler, a dose of chocolate can cause digestive, nervous, and cardiac issues of varying degrees of severity.

Why is chocolate dangerous to dogs then? When should I be concerned? Is chocolate only dangerous for dogs? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

What three things do I need to know about the clitoris? Jul 03, 2024
    Show notes

The clitoris is the only organ in the human body that’s dedicated solely to pleasure. It doesn’t have any muscles or play any role in the body's other functions. And while our understanding of the clitoris has improved in recent years, there's still a lot to learn, as research in this area is relatively new.

Until recently, researchers thought that the clitoris had 8,000 nerve endings. For comparison, that's more than double the sensory receptors found on the glans of the penis.

Why is the clitoris so sensitive? I’ve heard people compare the clitoris to the penis before. Are there really similarities between the two? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

Should you really drink hot drinks when it’s hot? Jul 02, 2024
    Show notes

It’s known that to beat the heat and avoid dehydration, we need to drink plenty of water. But while some reach for a hot cuppa, others swear by ice-cold beverages, and while this may give you an instant feeling of chill it's sadly just fleeting.

The reason being is that our bodies work hard to keep our core temperature steady at around 37°C. So while a cold drink might feel refreshing, it actually dials down our sweat production—the very thing that helps us cool. Plus, super cold drinks can trigger headaches, cramps, and tummy troubles.

Should you do the opposite and drink hot beverages? What can you drink to cool down? What if you are not a fan of plain water? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
