    Divine Office – Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church (Breviary)

    Daily scripture readings, psalms, and prayers that follow in the ancient traditions of the Church. Follow along using the session outlines at DivineOffice.org or by using the Divine Office iPhone, iPod, iPad app or Android app. From ancient times the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the liturgy of the hours. In this way the Church fulfills the Lord’s precept to pray without ceasing, at once offering praise to God the Father and interceding for the salvation of the world. For this expressed purpose, the recordings of the Hours presented here are intended to expand awareness of this Liturgy, introduce and practice the structure of this prayer, and to assist in the recitation of the Liturgy in small groups, domestic prayer and where common celebration is not possible.

    26th Week in Ordinary Time • Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels • Memorials of Saint Jerome, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and the Holy Guardian Angels • Liturgical Colours: Green/White

    This week we are witnessing a pastoral conversation between generations within the early Church: Saint Paul’s letter to the Philippians is paired with Saint Polycarp’s Letter to the same congregation about 50 to 60 years later. Between those two letters stand four celebrations — the Archangels, Saint Jerome, Saint Thérèse, the Guardian Angels.

    This Week in the Liturgy – Highlights

    Sunday 27 September — 26rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Office of Readings – First reading: Philippians 1:1–11, Saint Paul’s greeting and thanksgiving — “he who has begun the good work in you will carry it through to completion.”
    Second reading: Saint Polycarp, bishop and martyr, from his own letter to the Philippians — “It is by grace that you are saved”.
    Responsory after the second reading: “God has saved us and called us to a life of holiness, not because of anything we had done, but according to his own design and by his own grace.” (2 Timothy 1:9; Psalm 115:1)

    Monday 28 September — Office of Readings – First reading: Philippians 1:12–26, “I long to be with Christ.” Saint Paul admits that some are preaching Christ specifically to make his imprisonment harder, and refuses to let it trouble him: “What of it? All that matters is that in any and every way… Christ is being proclaimed!”
    Second reading: Saint Polycarp — “Let us put on the armor of righteousness.”
    Responsory after the first reading: “Christ will be glorified in me, whether I live or die. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.” (Philippians 1:20–21)

    Tuesday 29 September — Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels. Saint Gregory points toward the “nature-name-function” of the archangels. Michael means Who is like God, and he is sent whenever some act of wondrous power must show that no one can do what God does. Gabriel is The Strength of God, sent to announce the coming of the Lord mighty in battle. Raphael is God’s Remedy, and he touched Tobit’s eyes to cure his blindness.
    Office of Readings – First reading: Revelation 12:1–17a, Michael’s battle with the dragon. Second reading: Saint Gregory the Great — “The word ‘angel’ denotes a function rather than a nature” is the theme of this week’s reflection below.

    Wednesday 30 September — Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church. Saint Jerome spent thirty-four years in a cave near Bethlehem translating the Bible into Latin. In his Commentary on Isaiah, he argues that human wisdom alone cannot unseal the mysteries of Scripture.
    Office of Readings – Second reading: Saint Jerome, from the prologue to his commentary on Isaiah — “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

    In the 16th century, what had been established by centuries of organic liturgical use, was finally made law. The Council of Trent permanently preserved Saint Jerome’s monumental lifelong achievement as the official scriptural cornerstone of the Roman Rite.

    Thursday 1 October — Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. Saint Thérèse, because she felt the courage of a warrior, wanted to be an apostle, a martyr, a priest, a crusader, but none of these roles were available to a cloistered nun in poor health who would die at 24 years of age. Reading 1 Corinthians 12 and 13 in her solitude, she found her answer: “O Jesus, my love, at last I have found my calling: my call is love.”
    Office of Readings – Second reading: from Saint Thérèse’s own autobiography — “In the heart of the Church I will be love.”

    Friday 2 October — Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels. Saint Bernard guides us on how to receive the words of Psalm 91:11: “He has given his angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways”. It should “fill you with respect, inspire devotion and instill confidence.”
    Morning Prayer – Benedictus antiphon: “They are all ministering spirits, sent to care for those on the way to salvation.”
    Evening Prayer – Magnificat antiphon: “The angels will always see the face of my heavenly Father.”

    Saturday 3 October Saint Paul’s letter to the Philippians closes the week.
    Office of Readings – First reading: Philippians 4:10–23, Saint Paul thanks the Philippians for their generosity and writes about his complete reliance on Christ despite external hardship or because of it.
    Responsory after the first reading: “I know what it is like to be rich and what it is like to be poor. I have eaten well and gone hungry…
    — With Christ’s help I can do all things.” (Philippians 4:12–13; 2 Corinthians 12:10)

    This week in focus: A Function Rather Than A Nature

    From Tuesday, September 29th, Office of Readings, Second Reading: From a homily on the Gospels by Saint Gregory the Great, pope (The word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature)

    Saint Gregory the Great opens the Feast of the Archangels with the famous distinction Saint Augustine made before him (Angelus est nomen officii > Angel is the name of the office):

    “You should be aware that the word ‘angel’ denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message.”

    Angel is a job description. The Greek aggelos means messenger. These beings are spirits by nature at every moment; they are angels only when they are sent. Saint Gregory extends the distinction: those carrying lesser messages are angels, those carrying supreme ones are archangels, “and so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages.”

    Most of the angels, Saint Gregory says, have no personal names at all, and need none: in heaven, “where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known.” Names are given to three of them for our benefit, “to denote their ministry when they came among us.”

    “Thus, Michael means ‘Who is like God’; Gabriel is ‘The Strength of God’; and Raphael is ‘God’s Remedy.'”

    Each name is the mission. Michael is sent when some act of wondrous power must make clear that no one can do what God does — and his name is the question that answers the pride of the ancient enemy, who said I will ascend into heaven, I will be like the Most High. Gabriel, God’s strength, announces the Lord of the heavenly powers arriving as a helpless man. Raphael is God’s remedy, and Saint Gregory points to the moment he earned it: he touched Tobit’s eyes and banished the darkness of his blindness.

    Three names, each one an action.

    There is something here for anyone who has spent time wondering who they are. We tend to search for identity as a possession — a nature, something fixed and interior that we could locate if we looked hard enough, and then finally rest in. Saint Gregory’s angels have their nature already and it is never what they are called by. Their names came from being sent.

    The oldest Christian instinct about identity and vocation runs in the same direction. Simon becomes Peter when he is given something to hold. Saul becomes Paul on a road, mid-errand. You find out what you are by being sent, and usually while already in motion.

    “An angel stood by the altar, holding a golden censer; a large quantity of incense was given to him,
    — and clouds of incense rose from the hand of the angel in the presence of the Lord.
    Thousands upon thousands waited on him, and myriads upon myriads stood before him.
    — And clouds of incense rose from the hand of the angel in the presence of the Lord.”
    Responsory after the Second Reading (see Revelation 8:3, 4; Daniel 7:10)

    Ask a different question than who am I. Ask where you are needed, find your name in your ministry, and become a messenger in motion.

    The Holy Guardian Angels

    Memorial

    “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven,” (Mt 18:10).[1]

    Today is the memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels. In Sacred Scripture, we see angels coming alongside mankind, carrying out God’s messages and supporting people in their affairs. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.” Holy Guardian Angels reflect to believers an invisible realm of the Kingdom of God, one that is actively participating in the history of salvation. Lord, open my lips.
    — And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

    Ant. In the presence of the angels, come, let us adore the Lord.

    Psalm 67

    O God, be gracious and bless us
    and let your face shed its light upon us.
    So will your ways be known upon earth
    and all nations learn your saving help.

    Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you.

    Let the nations be glad and exult
    for you rule the world with justice.
    With fairness you rule the peoples,
    you guide the nations on earth.

    Let the peoples praise you, O God;
    let all the peoples praise you.

    The earth has yielded its fruit
    for God, our God, has blessed us.
    May God still give us his blessing
    till the ends of the earth revere him.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. In the presence of the angels, come, let us adore the Lord.

    Office of Readings for Friday in Ordinary Time, the Memorial of Guardian Angels

    God, come to my assistance.
    — Lord, make haste to help me.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

    HYMN

    Let us sing gratefully, praising angel guardians
    Whom God's providence gives to protect us all.
    For they watch over us lest we are led astray
    By the wiles of the enemy.

    For since proud Lucifer, banished from heaven's court,
    Became a rebel prince, keen to avenge himself,
    His bitter jealousy seeks to prevent our race
    From attaining its destiny.

    Hasten to succor us, watchful custodian;
    Keep all calamities from those who trust in you,
    Let nothing trouble us, dangers, anxieties,
    Counsel us in perplexity.

    All praise eternally be to the Trinity,
    Whose one Omnipotence rules all created things,
    Whose glory infinite reigns in supremacy
    Outside time and the centuries. Amen.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 Lord, in your anger, do not punish me.

    Psalm 38
    A sinner in extreme danger prays earnestly to God
    All his friends were standing at a distance (Luke 23:49).

    I

    O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger;
    do not punish me, Lord, in your rage.
    Your arrows have sunk deep in me;
    your hand has come down upon me.

    Through your anger all my body is sick:
    through my sin, there is no health in my limbs.
    My guilt towers higher than my head;
    it is a weight too heavy to bear.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Lord, in your anger, do not punish me.

    Ant. 2 Lord, you know all my longings.

    II

    My wounds are foul and festering,
    the result of my own folly.
    I am bowed and brought to my knees.
    I go mourning all the day long.

    All my frame burns with fever;
    all my body is sick.
    Spent and utterly crushed,
    I cry aloud in anguish of heart.

    O Lord, you know all my longing:
    my groans are not hidden from you.
    My heart throbs, my strength is spent;
    the very light has gone from my eyes.

    My friends avoid me like a leper;
    those closest to me stand afar off.
    Those who plot against my life lay snares;
    those who seek my ruin speak of harm,
    planning treachery all the day long.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Lord, you know all my longings.

    Ant. 3 I confess my guilt to you, Lord; do not abandon me, for you are my savior.

    III

    But I am like the deaf who cannot hear,
    like the dumb unable to speak.
    I am like a man who hears nothing,
    in whose mouth is no defense.

    I count on you, O Lord:
    it is you, Lord God, who will answer.
    I pray: “Do not let them mock me,
    those who triumph if my foot should slip.”

    For I am on the point of falling
    and my pain is always before me.
    I confess that I am guilty
    and my sin fills me with dismay.

    My wanton enemies are numberless
    and my lying foes are many.
    They repay me evil for good
    and attack me for seeking what is right.

    O Lord, do not forsake me!
    My God, do not stay afar off!
    Make haste and come to my help,
    O Lord, my God, my savior!

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Psalm-prayer

    Do not abandon us, Lord our God; you did not forget the broken body of your Christ, nor the mockery his love received. We, your children, are weighed down with sin; give us the fullness of your mercy.

    Ant. I confess my guilt to you, Lord; do not abandon me, for you are my savior.

    Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

    My eyes keep watch for your saving help.
    — Awaiting the word that will justify me.

    READINGS

    First reading
    From the letter of the apostle Paul to the Philippians
    3:17—4:9
    Stand firm in the Lord

    Be imitators of me, my brothers. Take as your guide those who follow the example that we set. Unfortunately, many go about in a way which shows them to be enemies of the cross of Christ. I have often said this to you before; this time I say it with tears. Such as these will end in disaster! Their god is their belly and their glory is in their shame. I am talking about those who are set upon the things of this world. As you well know, we have our citizenship in heaven; it is from there that we eagerly await the coming of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will give a new form to this lowly body of ours and remake it according to the pattern of his glorified body, by his power to subject everything to himself.

    For these reasons, my brothers, you whom I so love and long for, you who are my joy and my crown, continue, my dear ones, to stand firm in the Lord.

    I plead with Evodia just as I do with Syntyche: come to some mutual understanding in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, too, my dependable fellow worker, to go to their aid; they have struggled at my side in promoting the gospel, along with Clement and the others who have labored with me, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again. Rejoice! Everyone should see how unselfish you are. The Lord is near. Dismiss all anxiety from your minds. Present your needs to God in every form of prayer and in petitions full of gratitude. Then God’s own peace, which is beyond all understanding, will stand guard over your hearts and minds, in Christ Jesus.

    Finally, my brothers, your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise. Live according to what you have learned and accepted, what you have heard me say and seen me do. Then will the God of peace be with you.

    RESPONSORY Ephesians 4:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18

    I urge you in the Lord’s name to stop living as the pagans live with their worthless concerns. Always seek to do what is best for one another and for everyone;
    — for this is what God wants you to do in Christ Jesus.

    Rejoice always, pray constantly, and always give thanks.
    — For this is what God wants you to do in Christ Jesus.

    Second reading
    From a sermon by Saint Bernard, abbot
    That they might guard you in all your ways

    He has given his angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways. Let them thank the Lord for his mercy; his wonderful works are for the children of men. Let them give thanks and say among the nations, the Lord has done great things for them. O Lord, what is man that you have made yourself known to him, or why do you incline your heart to him? And you do incline your heart to him; you show him your care and your concern. Finally, you send your only Son and the grace of your Spirit, and promise him a vision of your countenance. And so, that nothing in heaven should be wanting in your concern for us, you send those blessed spirits to serve us, assigning them as our guardians and our teachers.

    He has given his angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways. These words should fill you with respect, inspire devotion and instill confidence; respect for the presence of angels, devotion because of their loving service, and confidence because of their protection. And so the angels are here; they are at your side, they are with you, present on your behalf. They are here to protect you and to serve you. But even if it is God who has given them this charge, we must nonetheless be grateful to them for the great love with which they obey and come to help us in our great need.

    So let us be devoted and grateful to such great protectors; let us return their love and honor them as much as we can and should. Yet all our love and honor must go to him, for it is from him that they receive all that makes them worthy of our love and respect.

    We should then, my brothers, show our affection for the angels, for one day they will be our co-heirs just as here below they are our guardians and trustees appointed and set over us by the Father. We are God’s children although it does not seem so, because we are still but small children under guardians and trustees, and for the present little better than slaves.

    Even though we are children and have a long, a very long and dangerous way to go, with such protectors what have we to fear? They who keep us in all our ways cannot be overpowered or led astray, much less lead us astray. They are loyal, prudent, powerful. Why then are we afraid? We have only to follow them, stay close to them, and we shall dwell under the protection of God’s heaven.

    RESPONSORY Psalm 91:11-12, 10

    God gave his angels charge over you to protect you in all your ways.
    — They shall lift you up with their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

    No evil shall harm you, no plague shall come near your tent.
    — They shall lift you up with their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

    CONCLUDING PRAYER

    O God,
    who in your unfathomable providence
    are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us,
    hear our supplication as we cry to you,
    that we may always be defended by their protection
    and rejoice eternally in their company.
    Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
    who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    God, for ever and ever.
    — Amen.

    ACCLAMATION (at least in the communal celebration)

    Let us praise the Lord.
    — And give him thanks.

    Morning Prayer for the Memorial of Guardian Angels

    God, come to my assistance.
    — Lord, make haste to help me.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

    HYMN

    O great creator of the world,
    Your Hand divine has fashioned all,
    And with an equal providence
    You guard us lest we fail and fall.

    Be present with us while we pray,
    Poor sinners, but your children too,
    From dawn to dusk, most loving Lord,
    enrich our souls with light anew.

    Each angel whom you have assigned
    To help and guide us night and day,
    Be present, also, pure and strong,
    To keep all harm and sin away.

    May he be ever at our side
    To bid the hostile fiend depart,
    Lest he ensnare with his deceits
    The heedless and unwary heart.

    And may he shield us from the fear
    Of enemies and constant strife,
    Averting pestilence and woe
    That peace may truly bless our life.

    All glory to the Father be,
    Who by his angels fear dispels,
    From souls whom God the Son redeemed,
    In whom the Holy Spirit dwells. Amen.

    Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
    Let us praise and exalt him above all forever.
    Blessed are you, Lord, in the firmament of heaven.
    Praiseworthy and glorious and exalted above all forever.

    Ant. Blessed be God who sent his angels to rescue his faithful servants.

    Ant. 3 Praise the Lord, all you heavenly hosts of angels.

    Psalm 149
    The joy of God’s holy people.
    Let the sons of the Church, the children of the new people, rejoice in Christ, their King (Hesychius).

    Sing a new song to the Lord,
    his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
    Let Israel rejoice in its Maker,
    let Zion’s sons exult in their king.
    Let them praise his name with dancing
    and make music with timbrel and harp.

    For the Lord takes delight in his people.
    He crowns the poor with salvation.
    Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,
    shout for joy and take their rest.
    Let the praise of God be on their lips
    and a two-edged sword in their hand,

    to deal out vengeance to the nations
    and punishment on all the peoples;
    to bind their kings in chains
    and their nobles in fetters of iron;
    to carry out the sentence pre-ordained:
    this honor is for all his faithful.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Praise the Lord, all you heavenly hosts of angels.

    READING Exodus 23:20-21a

    See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice.

    RESPONSORY

    In the presence of the angels, I will sing to you, my God.
    — In the presence of the angels, I will sing to you, my God.

    I will praise your name.
    — I will sing to you, my God.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
    — In the presence of the angels, I will sing to you, my God.

    CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

    Ant. They are all ministering spirits, sent to care for those on the way to salvation.

    Luke 1:68 – 79
    The Messiah and his forerunner

    Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
    he has come to his people and set them free.
    He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
    born of the house of his servant David.

    Through his holy prophets he promised of old
    that he would save us from our enemies,
    from the hands of all who hate us.
    He promised to show mercy to our fathers
    and to remember his holy covenant.

    This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
    to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
    free to worship him without fear,
    holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

    You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
    to give his people knowledge of salvation
    by the forgiveness of their sins.

    In the tender compassion of our God
    the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
    to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
    and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
    and to the Holy Spirit:
    as it was in the beginning, is now,
    and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. They are all ministering spirits, sent to care for those on the way to salvation.

    INTERCESSIONS

    With one voice the choirs of angels sing their unceasing praise of the Lord. Let us join in their worship as we proclaim:
    Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.

    You commanded your angels to guard us in all our ways,
    — keep us from sin as you lead us in your path this day.
    Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.

    Father, the angels stand for ever before your face,
    — nourish in us a never-failing hope of coming at last into your presence.
    Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.

    Your children will be like the angels in heaven,
    — grant us chastity in both mind and body.
    Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.

    Send Michael, the prince of the heavenly hosts, to the aid of your people,
    — may he defend them against Satan and his angels on the day of battle.
    Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.

    Our Father who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name.
    Thy kingdom come.
    Thy will be done on earth,
    as it is in heaven.
    Give us this day our daily bread,
    and forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those who trespass against us,
    and lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.

    Concluding Prayer

    O God,
    who in your unfathomable providence
    are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us,
    hear our supplication as we cry to you,
    that we may always be defended by their protection
    and rejoice eternally in their company.
    Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
    who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    God, for ever and ever.
    — Amen.

    DISMISSAL

    May the Lord bless us,
    protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
    — Amen.

    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

    HYMN

    Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
    Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, praising Thee their sun above.
    Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
    Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

    All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
    Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
    Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
    Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

    Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
    Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
    Thou our Father, Christ our Saviour, all who live in love are Thine;
    Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

    Mortals, join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began;
    Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
    Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
    Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 I cried out, and the Lord heard me.

    Psalm 120
    Longing for peace

    To the Lord in the hour of my distress
    I call and he answers me.
    “O Lord, save my soul from lying lips,
    from the tongue of the deceitful.”

    What shall he pay you in return,
    O treacherous tongue?
    The warrior’s arrows sharpened
    and coals, red-hot, blazing.

    Alas, that I abide a stranger in Meshech,
    dwell among the tents of Kedar!

    Long enough have I been dwelling
    with those who hate peace.
    I am for peace, but when I speak,
    they are for fighting.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. I cried out, and the Lord heard me.

    Ant. 2 May the Lord watch over you as you come and as you go.

    Psalm 121
    Guardian of his people
    Never again will they hunger and thirst, never again know scorching heat (Revelation 7:16)

    I lift up my eyes to the mountains;
    from where shall come my help?
    My help shall come from the Lord
    who made heaven and earth.

    May he never allow you to stumble!
    Let him sleep not, your guard.
    No, he sleeps not nor slumbers,
    Israel’s guard.

    The Lord is your guard and your shade;
    at your right side he stands.
    By day the sun shall not smite you
    nor the moon in the night.

    The Lord will guard you from evil,
    he will guard your soul.
    The Lord will guard your going and coming
    both now and for ever.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. May the Lord watch over you as you come and as you go.

    Ant. 3 I rejoiced in the good news they told me.

    Psalm 122
    The holy city, Jerusalem
    You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22)

    I rejoiced when I heard them say:
    Let us go to God’s house.
    And now our feet are standing
    within your gates, O Jerusalem.

    Jerusalem is built as a city
    strongly compact.
    It is there that the tribes go up,
    the tribes of the Lord.

    For Israel’s law it is,
    there to praise the Lord’s name.
    There were set the thrones of judgment
    of the house of David.

    For the peace of Jerusalem pray:
    “Peace be to your homes!
    May peace reign in your walls,
    in your palaces, peace!”

    For love of my brethren and friends
    I say: Peace upon you.
    For love of the house of the Lord
    I will ask for your good.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. I rejoiced in the good news they told me.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 Let your loving kindness console me as you promised.

    Psalm 119
    X (Yod)

    It was your hands that made me and shaped me:
    help me to learn your commands.
    Your faithful will see me and rejoice
    for I trust in your word.

    Lord, I know that your decrees are right,
    that you afflicted me justly.
    Let your love be ready to console me
    by your promise to your servant.

    Let your love come and I shall live
    for your law is my delight.
    Shame the proud who harm me with lies
    while I ponder your precepts.

    Let your faithful turn to me,
    those who know your will.
    Let my heart be blameless in obeying you
    lest I be ashamed.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Psalm-prayer

    We know that your rulings are just ones, Lord, and so we ask for your mercy; treat us gently and we will not be put to shame.

    Ant. Let your loving kindness console me as you promised.

    Ant. 2 Protect me, my God, from those who rise up against me.

    Psalm 59
    Prayer for help against enemies
    These words of the Savior teach us the devotion that all should have for the Father (Eusebius of Caesarea).

    Rescue me, God, from my foes;
    protect me from those who attack me.
    O rescue me from those who do evil
    and save me from blood-thirsty men.

    See, they lie in wait for my life;
    powerful men band together against me.
    For no offense, no sin of mine, Lord,
    for no guilt of mine they rush to take their stand.
    Awake, come to my aid and see!

    O my Strength, it is you to whom I turn,
    for you, O God, are my stronghold,
    the God who shows me love.

    O God, come to my aid
    and let me look in triumph on my foes.

    As for me, I will sing of your strength
    and each morning acclaim your love
    for you have been my stronghold,
    a refuge in the day of my distress.

    O my Strength, it is you to whom I turn,
    for you, O God, are my stronghold,
    the God who shows me love.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Psalm-prayer

    Lord, God of power, you rescued your Son from the grasp of evil men. Deliver us from evil and confirm our trust in you, so that with our rising we may sing of your power and exult in your mercy at dawn.

    Ant. Protect me, my God, from those who rise up against me.

    Ant. 3 We are happy to be chastened by God, who heals us as he wounds.

    Psalm 60
    Prayer after disaster
    You will suffer in the world, but have confidence: I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

    O God, you have rejected us and broken us.
    You have been angry; come back to us.

    You have made the earth quake, torn it open.
    Repair what is shattered for it sways.
    You have inflicted hardships on your people
    and made us drink a wine that dazed us.

    You have given those who fear you a signal
    to flee from the enemy’s bow.
    O come and deliver your friends,
    help with your right hand and reply.

    From his holy place God has made this promise:
    “I will triumph and divide the land of Shechem,
    I will measure out the valley of Succoth.

    Gilead is mine and Manasseh,
    Ephraim I take for my helmet,
    Judah for my commander’s staff.

    Moab I will use for my washbowl;
    on Edom I will plant my shoe.
    Over the Philistines I will shout in triumph.”

    But who will lead me to conquer the fortress?
    Who will bring me face to face with Edom?
    Will you utterly reject us, O God,
    and no longer march with our armies?

    Give us help against the foe:
    for the help of man is vain.
    With God we shall do bravely
    and he will trample down our foes.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Psalm-prayer

    Lord Jesus, all power and authority is yours; you have overcome the world. Give us courage when evil seems to triumph and help us never to forget that you are with us to the end of time.

    Ant. We are happy to be chastened by God, who heals us as he wounds.

    HYMN

    O great creator of the world,
    Your Hand divine has fashioned all,
    And with an equal providence
    You guard us lest we fail and fall.

    Be present with us while we pray,
    Poor sinners, but your children too,
    From dawn to dusk, most loving Lord,
    enrich our souls with light anew.

    Each angel whom you have assigned
    To help and guide us night and day,
    Be present, also, pure and strong,
    To keep all harm and sin away.

    May he be ever at our side
    To bid the hostile fiend depart,
    Lest he ensnare with his deceits
    The heedless and unwary heart.

    And may he shield us from the fear
    Of enemies and constant strife,
    Averting pestilence and woe
    That peace may truly bless our life.

    All glory to the Father be,
    Who by his angels fear dispels,
    From souls whom God the Son redeemed,
    In whom the Holy Spirit dwells. Amen.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 The Lord has done great things for us; he is the source of all our joy.

    Psalm 126
    Joyful hope in God
    Companions with him in suffering, you will share his over-flowing happiness (2 Corinthians 1:7)

    When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
    it seemed like a dream.
    Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
    on our lips there were songs.

    The heathens themselves said: “What marvels
    the Lord worked for them!”
    What marvels the Lord worked for us!
    Indeed we were glad.

    Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage
    as streams in dry land.
    Those who are sowing in tears
    will sing when they reap.

    They go out, they go out, full of tears,
    carrying seed for the sowing:
    they come back, they come back, full of song,
    carrying their sheaves

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. The Lord has done great things for us; he is the source of all our joy.

    Ant. 2 May the Lord build our house and watch over our city.

    Psalm 127
    Apart from God our labors are worthless
    You are God’s building (1 Corinthians 3:9)

    If the Lord does not build the house,
    in vain do its builders labor;
    if the Lord does not watch over the city,
    in vain does the watchman keep vigil.

    In vain is your earlier rising,
    your going later to rest,
    you who toil for the bread you eat,
    when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber.

    Truly sons are a gift from the Lord,
    a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
    Indeed the sons of youth
    are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.

    O the happiness of the man
    who has filled his quiver with these arrows!
    He will have no cause for shame
    when he disputes with his foes in the gateways.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. May the Lord build our house and watch over our city.

    Ant. 3 Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

    Psalm 128
    Happiness of family life rooted in God
    “May the Lord bless you from Zion,” that is, from the Church (Arnobius)

    O blessed are those who fear the Lord
    and walk in his ways!

    By the labor of your hands you shall eat.
    You will be happy and prosper;
    the wife like a fruitful vine
    in the heart of your house;
    Your children like shoots of the olive,
    around your table.

    Indeed thus shall be blessed
    the man who fears the Lord.
    May the Lord bless you from Zion
    all the days of your life!
    May you see your children’s children
    in a happy Jerusalem!

    On Israel, peace!

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

    READING Acts 10:3-5

    One afternoon at about three Cornelius had a vision in which he clearly saw a messenger of God coming toward him and calling, “Cornelius!” He stared at the sight and said in fear, “What is it, sir?” The answer came: “Your prayers and your generosity have risen in God’s sight, and because of them he has remembered you. Send some men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon, known as Peter.”

    Hasten to succor us, watchful custodian;
    Keep all calamities from those who trust in you,
    Let nothing trouble us, dangers, anxieties,
    Counsel us in perplexity.

    All praise eternally be to the Trinity,
    Whose one Omnipotence rules all created things,
    Whose glory infinite reigns in supremacy
    Outside time and the centuries. Amen.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, to rescue them.

    Psalm 34
    God the savior of the just
    You have tasted the sweetness of the Lord (1 Peter 2:3).

    I

    I will bless the Lord at all times,
    his praise always on my lips;
    in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.
    The humble shall hear and be glad.

    Glorify the Lord with me.
    Together let us praise his name.
    I sought the Lord and he answered me;
    from all my terrors he set me free.

    Look towards him and be radiant;
    let your faces not be abashed.
    This poor man called; the Lord heard him
    and rescued him from all his distress.

    The angel of the Lord is encamped
    around those who revere him, to rescue them.
    Taste and see that the Lord is good.
    He is happy who seeks refuge in him.

    Revere the Lord, you his saints.
    They lack nothing, those who revere him.
    Strong lions suffer want and go hungry
    but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, to rescue them.

    Ant. 2 Our God is a living God, for his angel has protected me.

    II

    Come, children, and hear me
    that I may teach you the fear of the Lord.
    Who is he who longs for life
    and many days, to enjoy his prosperity?

    Then keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
    Turn aside from evil and do good;
    seek and strive after peace.

    The Lord turns his face against the wicked
    to destroy their remembrance from the earth.
    The Lord turns his eyes to the just
    and his ears to their appeal.

    They call and the Lord hears
    and rescues them in their distress.
    The Lord is close to the broken-hearted;
    those whose spirit is crushed he will save.

    Many are the trials of the just man
    but from them all the Lord will rescue him.
    He will keep guard over all his bones,
    not one of his bones shall be broken.

    Evil brings death to the wicked;
    those who hate the good are doomed.
    The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants.
    Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Our God is a living God, for his angel has protected me.

    Ant. 3 Glorify the God of heaven, sing praise to him before all living creatures, for he has shown you such great mercy.

    Canticle — Revelation 11:17-18; 12:10b-12a
    The judgment of God

    We praise you, the Lord God Almighty,
    who is and who was.
    You have assumed your great power,
    you have begun your reign.

    The nations have raged in anger,
    but then came your day of wrath
    and the moment to judge the dead:
    The time to reward your servants the prophets
    and the holy ones who revere you,
    the great and the small alike.

    Now have salvation and power come,
    the reign of our God and the authority
    of his Anointed One.
    For the accuser of our brothers is cast out,
    who night and day accused them before God.

    They defeated him by the blood of the Lamb
    and by the word of their testimony;
    love for life did not deter them from death.
    So rejoice, you heavens,
    and you that dwell therein!

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Glorify the God of heaven, sing praise to him before all living creatures, for he has shown you such great mercy.

    READING Revelation 8:3-4

    An angel came in holding a censer of gold. He took his place at the altar of incense and was given large amounts of incense to deposit on the altar of gold in front of the throne, together with the prayers of all God’s holy ones. From the angel’s hand the smoke of the incense went up before God, and with it the prayers of God’s people.

    Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.

    RESPONSORY

    God gave his angels charge over you.
    — God gave his angels charge over you.

    To protect you in all your ways.
    — God gave his angels charge over you.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
    — God gave his angels charge over you.

    CANTICLE OF MARY

    Ant. The angels will always see the face of my heavenly Father.

    Luke 1:46-55
    The soul rejoices in the Lord

    My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
    my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
    for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

    From this day all generations will call me blessed:
    the Almighty has done great things for me,
    and holy is his Name.

    He has mercy on those who fear him
    in every generation.

    He has shown the strength of his arm,
    he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

    He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
    and has lifted up the lowly.

    He has filled the hungry with good things,
    and the rich he has sent away empty.

    He has come to the help of his servant Israel
    for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
    the promise he made to our fathers,
    to Abraham and his children for ever.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
    and to the Holy Spirit:
    as it was in the beginning, is now,
    and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. The angels will always see the face of my heavenly Father.

    INTERCESSIONS

    The angels carry out God’s will. Let us pray that we too may listen carefully for his voice and hear his call, as we say:
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    O God, you made your angels messengers of your marvelous works,
    — help us to proclaim your wonderful deeds to all men.
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    The angels unceasingly proclaim that you are holy and exalted,
    — may your people on earth join their voices to the angelic song of praise.
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    You commanded your angels to watch over your servants in all their ways,
    — guide those who are traveling and bring them home safely in joy and in peace.
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    You gave the angels the mission of announcing peace to men,
    — inspire counsels of peace in the hearts of leaders and peoples of all nations.
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    When you send forth the angels to gather together your chosen people from every corner of the earth,
    — do not let them pass over any of your children, but bring them all to the unending gladness of your kingdom.
    With the angels we sing of your glory.

    Our Father who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name.
    Thy kingdom come.
    Thy will be done on earth,
    as it is in heaven.
    Give us this day our daily bread,
    and forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those who trespass against us,
    and lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.

    Concluding Prayer

    O God,
    who in your unfathomable providence
    are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us,
    hear our supplication as we cry to you,
    that we may always be defended by their protection
    and rejoice eternally in their company.
    Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
    who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    God, for ever and ever.
    — Amen.

    DISMISSAL

    May the Lord bless us,
    protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
    — Amen.

    General instruction:
    Please pray with us actively, especially by joining with us in saying antiphons and responses, most of which are indicated in this highlight.

    Consider an examination of your own conscience before beginning to best make use of our time together in prayer.

    Night Prayer for Friday

    God, come to my assistance.
    — Lord, make haste to help me.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
    — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

    Examination of conscience:

    We are called to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men, in our hearts and in our minds, in our actions and inactions. To do so, it is vital that we examine our conscience daily and to ask for God’s mercy as we fall short and to ask for His strength to do better.

    I confess to almighty God,
    and to you, my brothers and sisters,
    that I have greatly sinned,
    in my thoughts and in my words,
    in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
    And, striking your breast, say:
    through my fault, through my fault,
    through my most grievous fault;
    Then continue:
    therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin,
    all the Angels and Saints,
    and you, my brothers and sisters,
    to pray for me to the Lord our God.
    With a priest present, this absolution will be given:
    May almighty God have mercy on us,
    forgive us our sins,
    and bring us to everlasting life.
    The people reply: Amen

    HYMN

    O gladsome Light, O grace
    of God the Father's face,
    the eternal splendor wearing;
    celestial, holy, blest,
    our Savior Jesus Christ,
    joyful in thine appearing.

    Now, day is slowly fading
    evening light is showing,
    Evening hymn outpouring;
    Father of might unknown,
    thee, his incarnate Son,
    and Holy Ghost adoring.

    To thee of right belongs
    all praise of holy songs,
    O Son of God, Life-giver;
    thee, therefore, O Most High,
    the world will glorify,
    and shall exalt forever.

    Amen.

    PSALMODY

    Ant. 1 Day and night I cry to you, my God.

    Psalm 88
    Prayer of a sick person
    This is your hour when darkness reigns (Luke 22:53).

    Lord my God, I call for help by day;
    I cry at night before you.
    Let my prayer come into your presence.
    O turn your ear to my cry.

    For my soul is filled with evils;
    my life is on the brink of the grave.
    I am reckoned as one in the tomb;
    I have reached the end of my strength,

    Like one alone among the dead,
    like the slain lying in their graves,
    like those you remember no more,
    cut off, as they are, from your hand.

    You have laid me in the depths of the tomb,
    in places that are dark, in the depths.
    Your anger weighs down upon me;
    I am drowned beneath your waves.

    You have taken away my friends
    and made me hateful in their sight.
    Imprisoned, I cannot escape;
    my eyes are sunken with grief.

    I call to you, Lord, all the day long;
    to you I stretch out my hands.
    Will you work your wonders for the dead?
    Will the shades stand and praise you?

    Will your love be told in the grave
    or your faithfulness among the dead?
    Will your wonders be known in the dark
    or your justice in the land of oblivion?

    As for me, Lord, I call to you for help;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
    Lord, why do you reject me?
    Why do you hide your face?

    Wretched, close to death from my youth,
    I have borne your trials; I am numb.
    Your fury has swept down upon me;
    your terrors have utterly destroyed me.

    They surround me all the day like a flood,
    they assail me all together.
    Friend and neighbor you have taken away:
    my one companion is darkness.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
    and to the Holy Spirit:
    as it was in the beginning, is now,
    and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Day and night I cry to you, my God.

    READING Jeremiah 14:9a

    You are in our midst, O Lord,
    your name we bear:
    do not forsake us, O Lord, our God!

    RESPONSORY

    Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
    — Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

    You have redeemed us, Lord God of truth.
    — I commend my spirit.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
    — Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

    Gospel Canticle

    Ant. Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

    Luke 2:29-32
    Christ is the light of the nations and the glory of Israel

    Lord, now you let your servant go in peace;
    your word has been fulfilled:

    my own eyes have seen the salvation
    which you have prepared in the sight of every people:

    a light to reveal you to the nations
    and the glory of your people Israel.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
    and to the Holy Spirit:
    as it was in the beginning, is now,
    and will be for ever. Amen.

    Ant. Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

    Concluding Prayer

    All-powerful God
    keep us united with your Son
    in his death and burial
    so that we may rise to new life with him,
    who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
    — Amen.

    Blessing

    May the all-powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death.
    — Amen.

    Antiphon or song in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary

    Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy!
    Our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
    To you do we cry, poor banished
    children of Eve, to you do we send
    up our sighs, mourning and weeping
    in this valley, of tears.
    Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
    your eyes of mercy toward us; and
    after this our exile show unto us the
    blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus;
    O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.
