Show notes

What's your favorite tree? Maple, oak, pine, sequoia, some variety of fruit tree? You have a lot of options. Well, did you know that the word "trees" shows up over 200 times in the Bible? So this week on Discover the Word, Daniel Ryan Day leads the group in exploring whether all those mentions of trees are just scenery, or if they may actually be more significant and help tell the story of the Bible. You may come away convinced that it's not just "the heavens that declare the glory of God," but "trees declare the glory of God as well!"

74. My Three Sons | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Sep 25, 2022

Show notes

"One of our favorite guests on Discover the Word has been Sally Lloyd-Jones, known for her “Jesus Storybook Bible”. What was the subtitle for the book? (Every story whispers His name). But is that claim an exaggeration or a clever marketing hook, or does every story really whisper Jesus’ name? Even the difficult ones? In this episode, we want to test that idea by looking at one of the darkest moments in the early days of human history. And it involves what we could call “My Three Sons.”

We all have an interest in knowing what the future holds, don't we? So, if I were to ask you, what book of the Bible is all about what the future is going to be like, which book would you say? Most of us would say, the last book of the Bible--Revelation. But have you ever read or studied or heard sermons about Revelation? Did you find it difficult to understand? Well, this week on Discover the Word, New Testament scholar Dr. David Mathewson joins the group to talk about what the book of Revelation is revealing, and how we can read this fascinating section of Scripture.

72. Sinners Dinners | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Sep 11, 2022

Show notes

The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. What was shocking in the first century can still surprise us today: Jesus included the most messed up in His dinner table conversations – because He included them in His love. Scripture describes Jesus at dinners with several kinds of sinners including tax collectors, Pharisees, sinful women, thieves, the “unclean” and others. How do we respond when Jesus invites sinners to dinners? Do we say yes to His invitation to dine – as sinners - with our perfect God? And what about His invitation for others? What if we host sinners dinners and throw open the doors of our homes and our hearts to whoever might come that they too might know Jesus?

69. Does Jesus Really Want Me to Hate My Family? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries Aug 21, 2022

Show notes

"Family first." "The most important thing in the world is family." "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." There are lots of quotations that lift up the value of family. But there's one quote from a very influential person that doesn't usually make onto prints that people hang on their walls. It's a quote from Jesus, when he said "Unless you hate your family, you cannot be my disciple." Really? Yeah, it's right there in Luke 14:26. You can look it up. So, "Does Jesus Really Want Me to Hate My Family?" That's the question we ask in this episode of Discover the Word.

66. Who Am I? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries Jul 31, 2022

Show notes

Scripture tells us that when we enter a relationship with Jesus, we become new creations, the old has passed away and the new has come. But just what does this mean for you and me? Who are we in Jesus? Understanding who we are rises out of understanding who God is. The question Who Am I is best answered by looking at who God is…and then seeing ourselves in relationship to who He is.
