We'll visit Samaria, the Negev, the southern wilderness, and New Testament Jerusalem and discover why place always matters.

103. Roles of Women in the Work of Jesus | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Apr 16, 2023

Show notes

For thousands of years, believers have stewed over various “roles” women might occupy in the home, in our world and in the work of the church. Theological positions swing along a continuum with “women can occupy only certain roles” on one end to “women can occupy any role” on the other end. What might we learn about the roles women might occupy from looking at how Jesus included them in His work?

101. The Rebel Next to Jesus | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Apr 02, 2023

Show notes

How do you define faith? And what might great faith look like? To see arguably the greatest expression of faith in the Bible, we consider this week the “thief on the cross” and his expression of faith in Jesus—one dying man on a cross trusting in another dying Man on a cross for a future. We’ll see this week what makes that such great faith.

100. Forgiveness--The Story of Easter | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Mar 26, 2023

Show notes

One of the debated areas of biblical theology has to do with what we could call “atonement theory.” In other words, how did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish our salvation. This is not a debate about “if” his death accomplished it, but “how.” That’s all well and good, but our intent this Easter season is to focus on the fact of our forgiveness being made possible on the cross—not the way that forgiveness operated. Bill Crowder leads the conversations with Elisa Morgan, Mart DeHaan, and Rasool Berry about "Forgiveness, the Story of Easter."

99. Spiritual Formation | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Mar 19, 2023

Show notes

What do you think of when you hear the words, "You need to grow up?" What does it mean to be a "grown-up?" In our culture a big part of maturity is independence. An essential part of adult life is independence. That's why it's very confusing to our minds that in Christ, growing up is growing into complete and utter dependence on God. As believers growing doesn't make us need God less. In fact as we grow up in Christ, we need our Savior more desperately. This week on Discover the Word, spiritual formation director Shalini Bennett joins the group to share with us some spiritual formation practices that can help us grow in love and dependence on God.

98. The Mother Side of God | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Mar 12, 2023

Show notes

What was your relationship like with your mom? Positive? Negative? We talk a lot about God being Our Father… you know, the one in Heaven who has a hallowed name. But there are a few places in the Bible where God is described in motherly terms, so the group thought it might be fun to explore some of those places together. And as we do, maybe keep this question in mind: how does God being like a mother help us get a sense of who God is, what God does, and how God relates to us? Explore "The Mother Side of God" with the Discover the Word group this week.

97. It's About Time | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread Mar 05, 2023

Show notes

We humans march along a timeline of life. Birth. Middle. Death. We make plans and measure our progress along the line of life. But what if our timeline of life is a false perspective? What if life is measured not by days, months, or years or even by minutes and hours? What if our entire lifetime is really an existence beyond time? The Bible offers a rich understanding of time, translated through various cultures over what we chart as thousands of years. How might we live our lives differently if we move from interpreting our lives as time-bound and instead, see them as God does, time-less as we live in an unending relationship with Him?
