Host Marc With a C sits down with founding Meat Puppets drummer Derrick Bostrom for an extensive conversation about the band's history. In part 1, we're going back to the 1980s: when three guys from Arizona made an ungodly racket, somehow landed on SST Records, and spent the rest of the decade becoming increasingly difficult for anybody to categorize.
Derrick helps untangle some of the chronology that's got muddled over four decades of retellings. He shares what it was actually like to exist inside the SST ecosystem - where releasing someone's records and understanding them were two entirely different jobs and making fun of the band on the air was just another day at the office. Along with tales from Derrick's lips to your ears, you'll hear slices of the unfinished, unreleased "homemade" version of Up on the Sun—an abandoned attempt at the album, offering a glimpse of familiar songs in their gestational phase.
This isn't a documentarian's attempt to reconstruct the eighties from press clippings. This is Derrick's memories of how the records happened, what everybody gets wrong, what everybody somehow got right, and all of the strange little accidents that became Meat Puppets history.
Somewhere along the way, a noisy Arizona punk band became one of the strangest and most original American bands of its generation. It turns out the guy behind the drum kit remembers quite a bit about how they got there!

Instead, this current era of Meat Puppets is characterized by: second chances, hard-earned wisdom, and a catalog that refuses to stand still. These later albums aren't epilogues; they're proof that artistic curiosity doesn't have an expiration date, and that a band can continue to surprise listeners long after the history books think the story has already been written.
Host Marc With a C follows Curt Kirkwood and the reborn Meat Puppets through an unlikely and deeply rewarding revival. Beginning with Rise to Your Knees, continuing through Sewn Together, Lollipop, Rat Farm, and Dusty Notes, we'll explore a band that rediscovered its voice while refusing to become its own tribute act. Along the way, Cris Kirkwood returned to the fold, drummer Ted Marcus became a vital part of the band's modern identity, Shandon Sahm powered much of the band's post-Sewn Together studio work, and Dusty Notes welcomed both the return of original drummer Derrick Bostrom and keyboardist Ron Stabinsky, bringing old friends and new collaborators together for one of the band's richest and most adventurous albums; not to mention Curt's son Elmo becoming a full-time official member!
This isn't a story about recapturing former glory, it's about what happens when musicians survive long enough to gain perspective and eventually put that into artistic motion. Rise to Your Knees announces that the Kirkwood brothers still share an unmistakable chemistry, Sewn Together finds them writing with renewed warmth and confidence, underrated albums Lollipop and Rat Farm continue to stretch their sound in surprising directions, and Dusty Notes embraces new collaborators without ever losing the personality that made the Meat Puppets unique in the first place.
We'll also take a few side quests, exploring the projects and releases that filled the spaces between studio albums, showing that creativity never slowed, even when the gaps between Meat Puppets records grew longer. More than anything, we'll examine how the band balanced continuity with reinvention, welcoming new musical voices while honoring the peculiar spirit that Curt and Cris built decades earlier in the Arizona desert.

Host Marc With a C follows Curt Kirkwood through the years in-between incarnations of the Meat Puppets; writing and recording with a remarkable cast of collaborators. First: the supergroup Eyes Adrift, alongside Krist Novoselic of Nirvana and Bud Gaugh of Sublime. After that band's brief lifespan, Kirkwood and Gaugh regrouped as Volcano. Finally, Curt stepped out completely on his own with the understated and deeply personal solo album Snow.
This isn't an intermission in the Meat Puppets story, it's a chance to see one of alternative rock's most distinctive songwriters through a different lens. Eyes Adrift blends the musical DNA of three legendary bands into something entirely new, Volcano expands Curt's love of reggae, country, and psychedelic rock into a loose, sun-soaked collaboration, and Snow strips away nearly everything but the songs themselves, revealing just how timeless Kirkwood's writing had become.
Curt never sounded like a guest in anyone else's band; these collaborations grew naturally from friendships rather than celebrity. In this episode we examine what happens when a songwriter with nothing left to prove simply follows his instincts. These records may not bear the Meat Puppets name, but they carry the same unmistakable fingerprints: surreal imagery, desert horizons, and melodies that always seem to find beauty in unexpected places.

Every great band reaches the point where evolution isn't optional, it's inevitable.

After John Entwistle's shocking death on the eve of The Who's 2002 tour, few could have been blamed for considering that event to be the proverbial "end of the road" for the group. Even fewer could have predicted that it would instead be followed by one of the largest tours in the band's history and their first album of new material in well over two decades, Endless Wire. But that's not all! If you'll carefully check the liner notes to Roger Daltrey's 2018 album As Long As I Have You - you might even notice enough appearances from Pete Townshend to consider it a secret Who album.
Rather than being The Who's twilight years, the era from 2002-present is actually among the most productive periods since their initial heyday! Host, Marc With a C, digs into the circumstances that brought the Who to a full-fledged reemergence - even when the backstories aren't particularly flattering. The 90s were a strange and unpredictable time for The Who. The band was back as a touring act but little else, meanwhile the individual members pressed on into their solo careers. Townshend's passion projects paved the way for eventual Who material, Daltry soldiered on to find a way forward musically, and Entwistle threw caution to the wind to start his own group with friends Steve Luongo and Godfrey Townsend (no relation). These twelve-odd years are the building blocks of how The Who put themselves back together - recreating the sounds of their records onstage for the first time - instead of the other way around. Join host Marc for a fan's-eye-view into the controversial 1989 reunion tour and a deep dive with Cap Blackard into the pros and cons of the two different versions of Townshend's concept album, Psychoderelict. Eventually the band returned to loudest, classic-style performances for the most surprising reason of all: Townshend getting as close to finishing Lifehouse as possible. Those stripped down gigs from 1999-2001 were well received. In fact - some believe The Who's appearance at the Concert For New York can hang with the leagues of Queen at Live Aid! But the new highs weren't to last, this episode goes up to the very last notes John Entwistle would ever play onstage with his childhood friends before his untimely passing in 2002.

Following the release of their 1982 album, It's Hard, The Who called it quits and spent the rest of the 80s redefining their solo careers. Join Discography host Marc With a C as he chronicles what he's dubbed "the first farewell era" - exploring the ways that the group had splintered and how they carried on in finding their individual voices. John Entwistle wouldn't have much luck getting his new record off the ground, Roger Daltry released a series of baffling solo projects, while Pete Townshend dabbled in film, book editing, and pursuits that would increasingly incorporate interwoven stories.
This is where Discography's commitment to discovering WHO the band really is kicks into gear as we dive into not just what the members do between albums, but what they do when there's no band to fall back on. And there's plenty of revelations to go around! For instance: Marc admits that he'd misunderstood the intent of Townshend's Iron Man album for years, and posits a theory about the White City album/film that's so controversial that it may make you rethink everything you think you know about The Who's chronology!
During this period, the three remaining members would occasionally find themselves reunited for the odd benefit or awards show, but in 1989 the bands silence was truly broken when they returned to the touring circuit with a massively expanded lineup. It's an especially strange but rewarding era for our three remaining protagonists, and the story isn't even close to being fully told yet!

Between 1977 and 1982, The Who changed in inconceivable ways. They were still a huge live draw, they were making massive hit records, and their tenure as stars of the silver screen was only seeming to grow, but this period certainly contained some of the saddest chapters in Who history: the death of the seemingly indestructible Keith Moon, the passing of previous manager Kit Lambert, and the Cincinnati stampede that left many fans injured or deceased. However, the records the group made during these trying times remain as solid as anything that any group of humans could hope to churn out under such dire circumstances.
This transitional time that saw the band bring drummer Kenney Jones into the fray and allowing an outside keyboardist to appear on the stage with the group in the form of John "Rabbit" Bundrick. Meanwhile, Pete Townshend's solo successes sometimes overshadowed those of his main group. For the past four episodes, Discography has counted down Janet Jackson's studio records - her self-titled 1982 debut to 2015's Unbreakable. But as host Marc With a C assembled this season, he was completely caught off-guard by just how much completely essential non-album music Ms. Jackson had produced over the years. In this epilogue episode, we discuss some of the best and brightest of her b-sides and give tips on how to find them - for the discriminating record junkie than needs physical media.
Janet Jackson's State of the World Tour has just wrapped, and there's rumblings behind the scenes of big things to come. This might be the end of this Discography season, but let's just say it might not be the end of her discography. In this episode, Marc ties up some loose canonical ends to this particular musical narrative and waxes poetic about the rumblings of Miss Jackson's future - not just in the new music end of things, but also long-overdue accolades. Janet Jackson - while still rightfully considered to be one of the biggest stars that the Western world has ever known - was practically silenced in the world of popular music by a 2004 "media blacklist". After that, it would appear that only a fraction of the music-buying public was even aware that she continued to make music after the event that came to be known as "Nipplegate".
In this penultimate episode of our Janet Jackson season of Discography, host Marc With a C, aided and abetted by certified Jacksons freak/funkmeister/DJ Chris LeBrane was determined to see how these lesser known albums - 20 Y.O., Discipline, and Unbreakable - would stack up against the rest of her illustrious recording career. In 2001, Janet Jackson was on top of the pop music world. Her blockbuster album All For You had just made her the first artist in the history of music to produce five consecutive number one albums in a row, her singles were making millions of people happy, and a mere live television performance on HBO brought in 12 million viewers alone.
And then? A "wardrobe malfunction" saw Janet blacklisted from nearly every avenue that had once championed her.
In this episode of Discography, Marc With a C continues his trek though all of Janet's canonical albums taking on All For You and the slept-on Damita Jo, while making an unfortunate, but necessary, detour away from the music and into tabloid territory. "Nipplegate", as the Superbowl incident has come to be known, casts a long shadow that very much impacts everything that came afterward. Fortunately funkmeister and Jacksons expert Chris LeBrane is along for the ride to add some sugar to this sour note in Janet's legacy.
What did her albums sound like after the world stopped paying attention to Janet's every move? That's journey begins now, and it's gonna get weird.

While venturing into the hitherto unknown territory of reviewing all Frank Zappa records as one big song was a feat in and of itself, Marc isn't done talking Zappa! After spending 5 episodes voicing his own takes, it's high time to get some other perspectives: "Weird Al" Yankovic, actor/ documentarian Alex Winter, and Zappa band member Mike Keneally.
Each of these guests share their first encounters with Zappa's music, the ways he influenced their lives, and they even offer advice on which album should be your first.
Alex Winter is presently in the midst of assembling the Zappa documentary to end them all. We hear how he gained unprecedented access to the Zappa vault and how this Kickstarter-record-breaking production is preserving priceless pieces of music history.
Mike Keneally shares memories from being brought into Zappa's 1988 band as a guitar wunderkind, working alongside the master, and elaborates on the controversial, forthcoming Zappa hologram tour.
"Weird Al" Yankovic took a break from his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour to share how Zappa became one of his earliest and most influential influences and discuss his now classic Zappa parody/ tribute, "Genius In France".
Marc also brings this season to a close by dipping into the mailbag to share listener letters and comments - not to mention holding himself accountable for a few errors in previous episodes. (Shhh!)

Is this phase five of Discography? It would appear to be. Indie rock musician Marc With a C has taken on the arduous task of reviewing all of the albums released in Frank Zappa's lifetime end to end as... one big composition.
Yes! But does it work? "Yes and but also": better than you'd think.
There's more live material in this episode than you can shake a stick at - trust us, we've tried the stick test - and the purportedly massive composition seems to do more rewinding than usual as we hurdle towards our conclusion: Civilization Phase III.
The end of this episode seems pretty final, but don't fret! We've still got one episode left in our Zappa journey. What could it be? Could a bunch of guests be dropping by? Will Marc read a bunch of listener mail? Will Marc finally change that intro statement he's recited five times? All these things are distinctly possibilities.

In this episode we set our sights on Frank Zappa's mid-eighties work. Things are getting extra weird, and we wouldn't have it any other way!
It's a controversial period - partially because some folks weren't ready for Zappa to go completely electronic with his Synclavier-led composition, while others felt that his lyrics in this era went far, far beyond the pale.
Culty indie pop singer/songwriter Marc With a C continues to analyze the entirety of the Zappa's discography as one continuous composition - exactly how the experimental artist claimed his work could be viewed. This week Marc takes the deep dive through ill-fated run-in's with the London Symphony Orchestra, big movements that are built around sampling the infamous PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) hearings, and... one record so difficult that Marc almost jumped off this project, full-stop.
We're getting tied to the whipping post, we're going to night school to learn all about the elusive G-Spot Tornado, and we're visited by... Sting from The Police?

Zappa contended that if you played all of his recordings together end to end, they'd create a big song, and we're in the early stages of testing that theory. Thrill as Zappa ditches and regains the "Mothers" moniker. Shiver as the records bounce back and forth between free jazz explorations, orchestral compositions, and learn which type of snow to avoid. Quiver as Zappa glides into "entertainer" territory with a little help from... Don Pardo and The Turtles???
