    Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Feed Your Head: The Great Jefferson Airplane Deep Dive is an audio documentary that was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. It includes long-form interviews, commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

    Part 26 of the series covers arguably the most entertainingly batty time period of the ex-Airplaners story—from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s—in the style of an audiobook.

    Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

    • How Mickey Thomas wound up replacing two legendary singers in Jefferson Starship;
    • Marty Balin stages a wildly obscure rock opera about being prosecuted for not having hits;
    • With Hot Tuna on hiatus, Jack & Jorma gleefully confuse their fans with punk band SVT & new wave outfit White Gland;
    • An overview of Grace Slick’s entire solo career, including the one release she created without any performative armor;
    • An overview of Paul Kantner’s incredible, crazy, sole solo album, Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchestra: The Empire Blows Back;
    • The rot begins to in;
    • And an overview of three of the four albums that Jefferson Starship Mk. II released: Freedom At Point Zero, Modern Times, and Winds Of Change.

    281A. The Discograffiti Soldiers of Sound Podcast: RUDY FISCHMANN Oct 11, 2026
    Show notes

    Rudy Fischmann passed away this morning at 7:20 am.

    Four years ago, he started listening to Discograffiti, and signed up for Patreon. I reached out to him, and we became fast friends. He’s 54—just three months older than me—and he told me during our first conversation that he had brain cancer. He began making this show—in case you’re unfamiliar with it, I’m pretty sure The Discograffiti Soldiers of Sound Podcast is the world’s only podcast within a podcast. And yet here we are, 150 episodes later, and Rudy has created a show that’s lasted far longer than most regular podcasts. And it’s literalized the Discograffiti community, bringing folks together far and wide as friends, collaborators, and…hell, possibly even as lovers, as far as I know.

    Throughout this entire time, I had never met Rudy, due to our geographical distance. But when he went into hospice recently, I unhesitantly leaped into my car and drove the six hours from New Jersey to Virginia. I stayed in the bed beside him for several days. We watched tons of music docs, we laughed a whole lot, we ate well, and we took a hell of a lot of pleasure in each others’ company.

    We also made this episode.

    Rest in peace, my sweet friend.

    Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. The Crazy Tale of Quicksilver Messenger Service is an audio documentary series that was crafted to act as the ultimate assemblage of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. This 8-episode series is built around a 2 1/2 hour interview with The Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye, and the main event: an unprecedentedly detailed five-hour interview with David Freiberg, a very special experience that—regardless of how you feel about the group—will absolutely blow your mind with its unique twists and turns. There’s in-depth commentary on their history, a slew of endlessly wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

    This is Part 8 of the series—and the final part of my discussion with David—in which we cover the time period during which Dino flies the plane into the side of a mountain, and the band recorded their final three records: Quicksilver, Comin’ Thru, & Solid Silver.

    Here are just a few of the many things that David discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

    • A peek into the making of Baron Von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun with Grace Slick & Paul Kantner;
    • Dino’s hard left in remaking Quicksilver into a brass-backed groove outfit before it flamed out;
    • The wild turnstile of personnel changes that shuffled the band’s deck before the original gang reunited for Solid Silver;
    • Whatever happened to the founding members of Quicksilver in their post-breakup years;
    • An in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Quicksilver, Comin’ Thru, & Solid Silver;
    • And an appended epilogue addressing the death of Greg Elmore, which happened seven days after our main interview and made David the last man standing.

    Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, Graham Nash dissects the extravagant lunacy that accompanied CSNY’s 1974 stadium tour, which Crosby referred to as “The Doom Tour”. Discograffiti’s Wild Tales: The Graham Nash Interview Series tackles every last release Graham ever had a hand in creating, including CSN/Y, C&N, and his solo career, detailing a history almost too wild to be believed.

    Here are just a few of the many things that Graham discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

    • A laundry list of the various excesses in which the four men indulged on that tour;
    • Good times and horror stories involving the copious cocaine imbibed that summer;
    • The band members’ wild personal trips during that tour, including Stills’ ornate fantasy life as a clandestine operative in the jungles of Vietnam;
    • Graham’s personal hang time with Neil Young after the tour;
    • And an in-depth deep dive on the music made for the CSNY box set 1974

    Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. Feed Your Head: The Great Jefferson Airplane Deep Dive is an audio documentary that was consciously crafted to act as the ultimate repository of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. It includes long-form interviews, commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

    Part 24 of the series covers a wildly eventful five-year period—from Baron Von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun’s May 1973 release to Jefferson Starship’s dissolution in late 1978—in the style of an audiobook.

    Here are just a few of the many things discussed in this episode of Discograffiti:

    • How Grace’s first solo album directly led to the formation of Jefferson Starship;
    • The fruits of the Starship’s first-ever session;
    • The process of Marty Balin tip-toeing back into the Jefferson fold;
    • Hot Tuna: The Metal Years;
    • The Marty miracle that was “Miracles”;
    • Paul and Grace break up;
    • Hot Tuna break up;
    • The show in Germany that precipitated the break up of Jefferson Starship Mk. I;
    • And an overview of the four albums that iteration of the band released: Dragon Fly, Red Octopus, Spitfire, and Earth.

    Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. The Crazy Tale of Quicksilver Messenger Service is an audio documentary series that was crafted to act as the ultimate assemblage of fact and opinion on one of the greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth. This 8-episode series is built around a 2 1/2 hour interview with The Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye, and the main event: an unprecedentedly detailed five-hour interview with last man standing David Freiberg, a very special experience that—regardless of how you feel about the group—will absolutely blow your mind with its unique twists and turns. There’s in-depth commentary on their history, a slew of endlessly wild stories, and star ratings for every release. Prepare yourselves: Lenny Kaye’s the wind up, and David Freiberg is very much the pitch.

    This is Part 5 of the series—and part 2 of my discussion with David—in which we cover the time period during which Quicksilver Messenger Service recorded their classic self-titled debut album.

    Here are just a few of the many things that David discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

    • The group’s collective reluctance toward signing with a label, after all their friends’ bands had hit the big time;
    • The massive volume of local gigs they played in the Bay Area;
    • The band’s first release as a 4-piece outfit, on the original soundtrack album for the film Revolution;
    • The unintended positive consequence for the band when Jim Murray split after Monterey;
    • The life-changing LSD experience that begat David’s “The Fool”;
    • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Quicksilver Messenger Service.

It includes long-form interviews, commentary on their history, wild stories, and star ratings for every release.

    Part 23 of the series features Jack and I (in his penultimate contribution to this series) doing a deep dive on the songs off the band’s final studio album for almost twenty years, Long John Silver.

    Here are just a few of the many things that Jack discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:

    • Why Jack never wrote a solo composition for the Airplane beyond the title track of this album;
    • Jack’s defense of this late-in-the-game attempt by the band to pull it together one last time;
    • A paean to Papa John Creach’s contribution to the band;
    • Jack’s thoughts on the twin poke-to-the-eyes of the Catholic Church on the record;
    • And an in-depth, track-by-track deep dive on every song off Long John Silver.
