Everything You Need to Know About the Backdoor Roth IRA in 2024 Dec 14, 2023

Roth IRAs can be established and funded for high-income earners by using what is known as the “back door” Roth IRA contribution method. Many high-income earners believe that they can’t contribute to a Roth IRA because they make too much money and/or because they participate in a company 401k plan. Fortunately, this thinking is wrong. While direct contributions to a Roth IRA are limited to taxpayers with income in excess of $146,000 ($223,000 for married taxpayers, 2024), those whose income exceeds these amounts may make annual contributions to a non-deductible traditional IRA and then convert those amounts over to a Roth IRA.

About IRA LLC's/Checkbook IRA
An IRA/LLC is an investment structure whereby an IRA invests capital into a newly created limited liability company (“LLC”). The IRA owns the LLC units just like your IRA can own Coca-Cola corporation stock. This IRA/LLC structure has been popular amongst real estate investors and other investors who regularly invest in alternative assets with their retirement accounts. A common IRA/LLC structure is one where the IRA invests a designated amount of cash into the LLC in exchange for 100% of the membership units of the LLC. The LLC then in turn acquires the intended investment asset. For example, a rental property. An IRA/LLC can also be formed with numerous IRAs owning the LLC with the ownership allocated between the different IRAs based on the dollars invested.

- When vetting an investment sponsor (syndicator, fund manager) ask them about a failure or problem they’ve had on an investment/asset. If they don’t have one, they’re either not being transparent or they haven’t had enough experience in what they do to be investing with them. - The middle market of commercial real estate has tremendous opportunity. Smaller deals below $5M are taken by wealthy individuals and entrepreneurs while large deals over say $20-50M are taken by large institutions, this leaves a huge opportunity in the “middle market” of $5M to $20M as the buyer pool is limited. Ep.80 Backdoor Roth IRA for 2023 and Beyond Dec 09, 2022

Roth IRAs can be established and funded for high-income earners by using what is known as the “back door” Roth IRA contribution method. Many high-income earners believe that they can’t contribute to a Roth IRA because they make too much money and/or because they participate in a company 401k plan. Fortunately, this thinking is wrong. While direct contributions to a Roth IRA are limited to taxpayers with income in excess of $140,000 ($218,000 for married taxpayers, 2023), those whose income exceeds these amounts may make annual contributions to a non-deductible traditional IRA and then convert those amounts over to a Roth IRA.

EP. 79 Roth Conversions and Chunking Before Year End Dec 01, 2022

Roth conversions remain popular as many fear that tax rates will only increase in the next few years, so why not convert now at lower tax rates and let the account grow and come out tax-free at retirement? Remember, if you have a traditional IRA or 401(k), then that money grows tax-deferred, but you pay tax on the money as it is drawn out at retirement. If you have traditional dollars where you obtained tax deductions for those contributions, you then have to pay tax on the amount you want to convert to Roth.

You get a tax deduction when you put money in and it comes out when you have medical tax-free at any age.
