Nick Hillary is hunted by his own town after the death of a 12-year-old boy, and he must find a way to prove that he's not the killer. But the person driving the investigation is someone with a mean streak and a grudge against Nick: that somebody is the sheriff's deputy, and he's got a team of police and lawyers that will do anything to put Nick away — even if it means breaking the law.

Garrett Phillips was a small-town boy in upstate New York. His mother, Tandy Cyrus, had just broken up with a man of color, one of the only in this predominantly white town. She even had begun rekindling with a cop she dated once before: a cop who had stalked her, abused her, sued her and threatened her during and after their relationship. Needless to say, Garrett's life wasn't as quiet as the small-town boy's life should be. But on October 24, 2011, Garrett's life would be snuffed out by a mystery hand, and suddenly, Tandy's track record in dating calls into question the first and only suspect for a homicide investigation gone bad.

It was late in the day on December 16, 2000, when Jerry Michael Williams failed to return home from a day of duck hunting on Lake Seminole. It was also his 6th wedding anniversary. His frantic wife Denise Williams, called the Tallahassee Florida police department to report him missing. After an exhaustive search, it was believed he fell out of his boat, and was eaten by alligators. It would take another 17 years before the truth of that night would come to light. A truth that was in fact much darker than anyone had imagined.
