173 TIM BRENT - Hockey Gave Me A Lot, But Nothing Replicates Deer Hunting Nov 12, 2016
    Show notes

Growing up in Cambridge, Ontario, Tim Brent knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a professional hockey player. He claims that his "do whatever it takes" mentality as the key to going pro. Today, at age 32, Tim is retired from a career in the NHL and finds himself in a second career of commercial real estate in North Carolina, where he and Eva Shockey Brent call home. As you might imagine, Tim enjoys his deer hunting. Introduced to the sport by two captains on one of his NHL teams, Tim has enjoyed hunting all over the country. Despite spending years on the ice and dealing night-in night-out with the adrenaline rush that comes with highly competitive professional sports, Tim says that there is nothing in this world that compares to the adrenaline rush of deer hunting. Tim shares with us how he first met Eva Shockey, how he is preparing for fatherhood, what hunting in a warmer climate south is like for a Canadian, and tells us a heck of a deer story about a hunt on which he wasn't really supposed to go.

172 BOB DUMONG - Learning the Nuances of Deer Management and A Free Fall Treestand Nightmare Nov 05, 2016
    Show notes

Fear isn't a factor. It never was. And probably never will. Now there is respect. Respect for how quickly life can flash before you when a simple tiedown strap is overlooked. Bob Dumong now respects every bit of treestand safety after falling 20' to the ground in a nightmare hunt when a strap let go causing Bob's climbing sticks to break away from the tree (seconds before stepping onto his platform). Bob says he now has great respect for treestand safety despite his still fearless mentality. Bob found himself in a new deer land, with new deer rules, in an area with a deer population that dwarfs the state's population where he learned to deer hunt. Yes, the deer hunting in North Carolina is much different than the deer hunting in New Hampshire. Since moving to North Carolina, Bob has taken a deep interest in deer management on the farms near to his home and has even guided many a hog hunter. Bob describes what he's learned about game management since moving to North Carolina, gives us a detailed recall of his fall from the treestand, and shares how he's changed his approach to treestand safety.

171 MARK STUKBAUER - Increasing Your Odds with Natural Cover Scents, Scrape the Ground, and The Stealth Step Oct 29, 2016
    Show notes

Mark Stukbauer lives in what is known by locals as the Ohio snow-belt. Despite this, the bucks grown big and as Mark says, "big deer are not foreign to me". Mark has spent many years in the woods chasing whitetails as many of us have, but early on (also as many us have experienced) Mark's kill rate and buck encounter rate wasn't as great as he would have liked. He questioned his skill and decided that scent must be the deciding factor that he was overlooking. Mark turned to natural covers scents as an answer to his lack of success in the field. Once Mark started covering himself in local plant material such as goldenrod, apples, and acorns which he would grind up and use on the stand, Mark closed the gap he needed to kill big bucks. And, he says you can do it too.

170 DAVE PRIEBE - Deer Hunting Basics - Courtesy NH Fish and Game Oct 22, 2016
    Show notes

When it comes to deer hunting, we all need to start somewhere. We learn from our parents and peers, we learn from our hunter safety courses, we learn from our mistakes. Often times it's just a good 'ole seminar that helps us understand better the vast information that we are fed daily about deer hunting. And, due to listener requests for a show on the basics of deer hunting, we decided to meet up with our old friend Dave Priebe at New Hampshire Fish and Game. Dave presents two classes each year, one on the basics of deer hunting and one advanced course called Hunting Dominant Bucks based on the studies of Dr Ken Nordberg (Dave's advance course can be found here: www.BigBuckRegistry.com/huntdombucks ). This is a recorded seminar for those who are just starting out and what to understand the predator prey relationship a bit better before stepping into the woods. However, once you've had your dose of the basics, feel free to peruse through our back catalog for more advanced deer hunting techniques from some of the best deer hunting minds on the planet.

169 NICK PINIZZOTTO - The National Deer Alliance and a Buck Named Second Chance Oct 15, 2016
    Show notes

Growing up in a small home in a small rural town set the stage for Nick Pinizzotto and a career as CEO of some of the most recognized sportsman groups in the nation. A love for the outdoors and wildlife seems to be at the root of Nick career path. Nick says even though it seems like we are making decisions based on biological science when it comes to conservation rules and regulations, it's often times more political science operating behind the scenes. Nick's focus these day is with the National Deer Alliance, a young organization who's goal is to alert members of legislative efforts that could affect your hunting rights and privileges, much like the NRA alerts its members about gun laws. And, we get to hear Nick tell a great story about a buck he calls Second Chance.

168 DAN BAYUS and the Tinemen, Tuned In Archery, and Deer Hunting Late October Oct 08, 2016
    Show notes

Dan Bayus is a dreamer. And a do'er. He'd rather be shown than told. Dan's theory: Test the theory first and hyper-focus your shots. It seems Dan does this in and out of the field and that's probably what makes him a great deer hunter and deadly archer. Dan grew up in the land of Ohio giants and has recently relocated to Pennsylvania. Not surprisingly, even though he won't share exact locations or GPS co-ordinates, Dan already has a focus buck for the season. Dan prefers to hunt this way: focus on particular bucks, understand that deer pattern hunters, and know that treestands are your friend. To help him become a better archer Dan once spent time with a US Olympic Archery coach. That's what he means by hyper focus. We learn from Dan how he prepares for each hunt, how he watches cold fronts, wind directions, barometric pressure, and moon phases, learning buck tendencies, and late October strategies. Notebook required.

167 The Finale- JARED SCHEFFLER - A Monster Public Land Kansas Whitetail: The Kill - Whitetail Adrenaline Oct 01, 2016
    Show notes

The Finale of an Epic Whitetail Hunt, this is the conclusion of Jared Scheffler's Monster Whitetail Hunt. Find Part I HERE: www.BigBuckRegistry.com/jared2part1

From Part I: Jared Scheffler is one of the best deer hunters we've ever interviewed. His style, which is mostly spot and stalk, on the ground, public land, long bow hunting, has led to some of the most amazing deer hunting footage we've ever seen. In 2015 Jared took his largest whitetail to date and as the early deer season get into full gear in most parts of the US, we thought this would be a great story to inspire you to get out. It's an epic tale with lots of twists and turns that Jared masterfully details in his story. We decided to break it into two parts, so you'll have to wait until next week to hear the finale. Take lots of notes, Jared lays out some dandy tips in this episode.

167 JARED SCHEFFLER - A Monster Public Land Kansas Longbow Whitetail: The Hunt - Whitetail Adrenaline Sep 24, 2016
    Show notes

Jared Scheffler is one of the best deer hunters we've ever interviewed.

166 TIM GAUTHIER - Swamp Buck Pinch Points, Hunting the Hunter, Ozone, and The ScentLok Enforcer Sep 17, 2016
    Show notes

50 years of deer hunting has to account for something. That's half a century of deer hunting knowledge. How could we resist. Tim Gauthier has made a profession of taxidermy, hunting and filming wildlife, and now he's jumping to the retail business as he explores the benefits of ozone to the everyday deer hunter. Yes, Tim has experienced lots over the years and it's true, he used to climb into his treestands like a telephone lineman climbs to the top of a telephone pole. Tim says that the best place to hunt is often where the other hunters refuse to go, which why Tim loves to hunt the deep dark swamps where he hikes 3 miles to get to his favorite stand. According to Tim, the pinch points in a swamp are just as good as the pinch points in any mid-west open field. Once again, as we continue our exploration of the habits of world class deer hunters, we pick Tim's brain and finds out how he does it so you can too.

165 LEE & TIFFANY LAKOSKY - Mach 10, Velvet Bucks, Standing Corn Ground Blinds, and Tree Hinge Tactics Sep 10, 2016
    Show notes

Sure, having your first baby might change things a bit, but the corn still needs to grow, the fields need to be seeded, the trees need to be cut, and life going any slower than Mach 10 just wouldn't seem normal. That's how Lee and Tiffany, our guests from Episode 050, like it. Tiffany has pulled back just a bit to take care of their son, but both Lee and Tiffany enjoy a fast paced country life. They say that when they're not on the road, they're home bodies and you'll never find them at a coffee shop (Lee doesn't drink coffee, and doesn't need to). Lee says that all the work is done by September on his endless acreage of farmed prime hunting land. In fact, Lee is so meticulous about created amazing deer habitat that his neighbors should thank him. We go deep with Lee and Tiffany on this show and talk everything from parenting, to hunting standing corn, to how to sneak into a field without detection, to hinge cutting trees for habitat, to building watering holes. Get your notebooks out.
