223 DAVE PAULIDES - Missing Hunters 411, The Stranger Things Oct 28, 2017
    Show notes

You are about to listen to a series of stories where the victims never thought they'd be lost. The vast majority of these stories have never been documented before at this level. Dave Paulides, author of the book Missing 411 - Hunters - Unexplained Disappearances, part of a series backed by the CanAm Project, decided to delve deeper and investigate a subset of missing persons, specifically those who disappeared in National Parks and Forests. Dave identified a deeper subset of missing person that hit home with us, specifically hunters with skill sets whom you could never imagine deemed missing, much less lost, all of which were never found. Dave explains how he first came across this unusual subset of missing victims, shares with us five of the many stories in his book, and attempts to put some perspective on what each of these cases have in common.

221 SHAWN SMITH - A Discussion of High Fence, Low Fence, Deer Breeding, & Genetics Oct 14, 2017
    Show notes

Seems like one of the most controversial topics amongst hunters these days is high fence hunting. So, we decided to take another deeper look into the subject, only this time with Shawn Smith from Texas. Shawn, along with his father Rowan, runs a high fence-low fence ranch, a deer breeding and genetics facility, and a deer fence manufacturing company. There are many permits involved in running a high fence ranch, state granted benefits, state agency involvement, and there are quite a few things that we can learn from deer in a high fence/low fence managed hunting areas that we can take to the field on even public grounds.

220 JOHN LOUK - The TMA, More Than a Sticker - Tree Stand Safety Oct 07, 2017
    Show notes

If you've shopped for a tree stand between 1996 and now, you may have noticed a sticker on the box or on the tree stand with the three initials, TMA - the Treestand Manufacturer's Association. This sticker seems to be attached to everything we buy relative to climbing a tree these days, but what the heck does in mean? Climbing a tree prior to 1996 really was all that saf and certainly there was no accountability regarding tree stand industry standards. In a room, in a voluntary meeting at a trade show in Atlanta, Georgia in 1995, a group of treestand manufacturers gathered to build a new set of standards specific to a niche group of products that only a niche group of people understand, called treestands. It wasn't as smooth as you might think, but it certainly changed the industry forever, made it safer, and ultimately more enjoyable and effective for the hunter. That TMA sticker, it means a heck of a lot more than meets the eye.

219 BLAKE ALMA - One Hunter's Beginning, The Art of the Outdoorsman Sep 30, 2017
    Show notes

Blake Alma has written for numerous outdoor publications, written 4 books, and hosts his own outdoor radio show. All because someone handed him a fishing pole when he was 13 years old. He fell for the outdoor way of life. Here's the kicker. Blake is only 16 years old. In just 3 years Blake has accomplished more than many accomplish in a lifetime. Blake is driven, isn't consumed by video games, and has a direction that we rarely see in a 16 year old these days.

218 BEN RISING - Barometers, Cold Fronts, October 23rd, and Rule #1 Sep 23, 2017
    Show notes

Ben's reputation in the whitetail world is no secret. With the many Boone and Crockett bucks to his credit, it's easy to see why hunters want to know more. Ben's dad started trapping and hunting with Ben when he was just a toddler. He credits his woodsmanship, deer and habitat knowledge to his father and the older generations of people who spent time with him outdoors. Ben has been in the forest industry since the age of sixteen and started his own logging business at the age of twenty. Ben now works as a forester/timber buyer for a local sawmill and as an outfitter for Wicked Ridge Outfitters.

    Show notes

When you get your own Wikipedia page, you know you've done something notable. Turns out Nick Hoffman has a page on the interweb based encyclopedia, and he should. Nick made a career playing fiddle next to the likes of Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Trace Adkins, Sara Evans, and Brooks & Dunn. But the fun doesn't stop there. Nick has a show on the Outdoor Channel called Nick's Wild Ride where he hunts different parts of the world, but explores and documents unique aspects of the local culture while on location. We suspected that Nick learned a thing or two while hunting different species so we asked him. He said the big this is to play the wind, sit down, and shut up (an old Fred Bear saying).

216 BILL VALE - Stay Ahead of the Buck, First Time Stand Magic Sep 09, 2017
    Show notes

Every hunter dreams of shooting a trophy buck—of looking down on a cool, crisp morning and seeing a massive set of antlers walking below his or her tree. Master Bowhunter Bill Vale's landmark book brings into perspective the order of survival. Bill enjoys hunting in areas where the deer are under extreme hunting pressure, like Bill's hunting area of Calhoun County, Michigan, where there are some of the highest numbers of hunters per square mile than any other place in the country. Bill studies how the solar/lunar forces (perigee and apogee), and the light the moon reflects and governs the movement and instincts of big bucks, and the timing of the rut from year to year. Bill shares with us his aggressive secrets, tactics, and field-tested strategies that have been proven successful after 35+ years of hunting for pressured big bucks.

215 CURT GEIER - Working Class Bowhunter and Billy Joe Lunch Bucket Sep 02, 2017
    Show notes

"...for Billy Joe Lunch Bucket, the working man like me an you"- That's the phrase that embodies the cast of the podcast, Working Class Bowhunter. One day Curt Geier turned in his BMX bicycle for a compound bow and the rest is now actively in the podcast history books. Curt heads up the podcast and has created a remarkable brand and cast. Their show is described as unscripted, fun, and casual, and all about the blue collar bow hunter. We've been a fan since day one, and we finally put this interview together with Curt. It's been a long time coming.

214 ART HELIN - 365 Food Source, Deep H2O Pools, and The Deer Sanctuary Aug 26, 2017
    Show notes

Art Helin spends a lot of time in the deer woods. He is a student. Art says that it's not unusual for him to spend 150 days a year in the field - guiding, scouting, hunting, but most of all learning. You'll often find Art delivering seminars for many different aspects of deer hunting, where he shares stories that he draws from his own experiences, both successes and failures. Art uses lots of today's technology including online topographical and aerial maps and game cameras. He loves a good food plot, timberland management, pond projects, and smart foresters. In turn, Art conducts his own deer habitat consultations and will share his knowledge with any hunter that will listen.
