How Can I Really Be Happy? | Mini Quiet Time Aug 05, 2022
    Show notes

We all have things that we think will make us happier, and it’s not necessarily bad to pursue them. But sometimes our love gets out of order, and we put things first in our lives that really shouldn’t be there. God wants to help us change that so we can find the joy and satisfaction we are actually looking for.

In the story of Martha and Mary, we can learn from Jesus how prioritizing our relationships with God and people can truly make us happy.

Why Are There So Many Rules in Christianity? | Mini Quiet Time Jul 23, 2022
    Show notes

Sometimes our experience of Christianity can feel like a lot of rule-following. Some of us respond to this by throwing ourselves into mastering these rules. We learn the “strategies” of Christianity, the things we have to do to get ahead easier or win the approval of God or other people.

Others of us might feel frustrated and defeated by Christianity because we feel like we’re constantly failing at the things we are supposed to do. When we feel this way, we’ll eventually want to just walk away.

Or, we might go back and forth between the two, trying to master the rules and then crashing in frustration because being perfect is impossible.

The subject of today's Mini Quiet Time story was caught in just such a dilemma. This man, often referred to as the Rich Young Ruler, had a conversation with Jesus that can teach us how to break free from a frustrating, unsatisfying, and rule-dominated experience of Christianity to find a real relationship with God.

The Myth Of The Perfect Family Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

In this new series about parenting teens, Russ and friends discuss the myth of the perfect family. Many of us become parents with preconceived notions of what a family should be like, or what constitutes "normal." It's important to get spiritual perspective about family because when we compare ourselves to others, get self-piteous, or lose sight of what God's doing we become discouraged.

We are living in a time when the pandemic has affected young people's mental health tremendously, so it is crucial that we as parents deal with our own minds and hearts in order to understand our kids' hearts. Join us as we delve into how not to be perfect parents, but to be parents that love and help our kids grow.

How Do I Talk to God When I Feel Guilty? | Mini Quiet Time Jul 11, 2022
    Show notes

Guilt is a tricky thing to handle, but it’s something everyone experiences. It’s very easy to try to defend ourselves or blame others for our sins and mistakes so that we don’t have to face the consequences of them. Or, we may get overly emotional when we feel guilty, drowning in despair rather than simply owning up to what we’ve done and resolving the relationship.

God doesn’t want us to be trapped and held back by guilt. He just wants us to come to him with our guilt, take responsibility, and move on.

In Luke 18, Jesus tells a story about two people and how they handled guilt differently. Listen to this week's podcast to learn how The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector can teach us to talk to God even when we feel guilty.

The Ask, the Risk, and Trusting God: The Parable of the Forgiven Debt Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

The Bible gives us a powerful story about a woman who had reasons to feel bad about herself and faced criticism from other people, but Jesus didn’t see her the way other people saw her or even the way she might have seen herself. He loved her for who she was, and his forgiveness and care led the woman to give that much love back. The story of the forgiven woman and the Parable of the Forgiven Debt is a prime example of what can happen when we are grateful for God’s love, and how our own pride, selfishness, and criticism can hold us back from that love. Join Amy, Jynette, and Michele as they discuss this incredible parable and how we can respond to God’s love too.

Responding to God’s Call: The Parable of the Great Banquet Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

When you think of a feast, what do you think of?

Most of us probably think of fun, friends, and good times. These feelings of joy, connection, and fullness are what God is inviting us to access in his Kingdom, rather than rules and restrictions that so many of us often associate with religion.

When we aren’t honest about our desires, motives, and values, we will make excuses and miss out on the opportunity to respond to God’s call. Check out this podcast about the Parable of the Great Feast as we discuss this opportunity and how exciting God’s invitation is to be part of his Kingdom.

    Luke 14:15-24 NLT:

Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!” [16] Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. [17] When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ [18] But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ [19] Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ [20] Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ [21] “The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ [22] After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ [23] So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. [24] For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’”

Where Is God When I Feel Lost? | Mini Quiet Time Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

The Bible talks a lot about being lost—not just physically, but spiritually.

We can lose our sense of who we are and what really matters. Even those of us who are Christians can lose our way, going through the motions but wondering if we can ever find our way back to faith in God. Feeling lost is frustrating, confusing, and lonely. But God never leaves us hanging.

Jesus tells us over and over again especially in Luke 15 that God searches tirelessly for the lost. This Mini Quiet Time about the Parable of the Lost Coin can help us understand God's heart toward us when we've lost our way.

How Does God Feel About Me? | Mini Quiet Time Jun 15, 2022
    Show notes

One of the most important choices we can make is what we’ll do with the things God has given us. God wants to give us a full life, and he can work through not only our talents, but also our experiences and even our weaknesses and mistakes to make a difference in the world.

Our choice is whether or not we’ll trust him and use these things for good, or live a small life held back by fear or selfishness. In the Parable of the Talents, Jesus helps us understand God by telling us about a man who goes on a journey and entrusts his servants with his things while he is gone.

We can learn from this story that when we see how much God trusts and believes in us, we’ll trust him too.
