DawgmanRadio: A talk with former UW Director of Recruiting Cooper Petagna Jul 22, 2021
    Show notes

There was some big news that came down the 247Sports pipeline last week; former Washington Director of Player Personnel Cooper Petagna was joining the network as a National Recruiting Analyst.

Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke to Cooper this week to talk about his Louisiana roots, how he got into the business, his move to Washington and how that came about, his takes on the head coaches he's been able to work with, including Cincinnati's Luke Fickell, Michigan's Jim Harbaugh, and Chris Petersen. Petagna calls Petersen a 'true one percenter', a coach that will not only make you better at what you do but will also make you a better person, the type of person you want to be surrounded by.

Cooper also talks about his early time at LSU and his recollection of players like current Seattle safety Jamal Adams.

But the bulk of the conversation surrounded the mechanics of the prospect evaluation process from someone who worked in a number of big-time FBS recruiting offices, with a particular emphasis on Washington. How does the process begin, and what steps do the coaches take to move the process through as they vet the prospects and what they value as intangibles. Petagna also talks about the different position groups and how the evaluation process might differ when looking at offensive linemen compared to quarterbacks.

And at UW, compared to other programs Petagna worked at, the key word was 'fit'. He spoke about that never-ending search for players that fit what the Huskies were looking at, and he spoke specifically about players like Trent McDuffie, Elijah Molden, Rome Odunze, and Sam Huard.

Grinolds also asked Petagna about the differences between the schools he's worked at, and how regional factors and program priorities played into how recruiting was dealt with on a day-to-day basis. With Washington specifically, Petagna talked about how the Huskies went head-to-head against certain programs, like Stanford, Notre Dame, Oregon, and others, and how they approached those recruiting battles. He also spoke on Nike's influence within the Ducks' program and what makes Oregon a strong recruiting school.

In Cooper's opinion, why do prospects choose specific schools? What are the most important things that they focus on when they come to that point when they're ready to commit to a school? He focuses on one very specific trait that all the best recruiters have that separates them from the rest of the pack.

And what was it about Washington that appealed to recruits during his time at Montlake?

As a talent evaluator, Petagna has seen his share of freakish players. Who are some of the top guys that literally jumped off the screen when he watched tape of them?

During the course of the interview, Grinolds also asked Petagna about places to hit in Ann Arbor before the UW-Michigan game, his time living in Ballard when working at Washington, and also whether or not Chris Petersen will ever coach another college football game. And who might win a boat race; Petersen or Lake?

DawgmanRadio: New Schedules, Recruiting Update, NIL Jul 02, 2021
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - had plenty of news to dig into this week, as there were a lot of things happening at Montlake, as well as around the country.

To start, the guys dig into today's big news as Washington announced a ton of schedule updates for football. The home-home series with Michigan State was moved up to 2022-23, and the Huskies also added home games with Boise State for 2023 and 2029. And the Michigan game that was supposed to be played last season has now been officially rescheduled for 2028.

After a quick break to pay some bills, the guys move right into the latest recruiting news. Since our last podcast, Washington has received verbal commitments from two players, DL Ben Roberts from Salt Lake City (Utah) East, and RB Emeka Megwa from Keller (Tex.) Timber Creek. Megwa made his commitment official via CBS Sports HQ Thursday, picking the Huskies over offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, and many others. Both Roberts and Megwa officially visited Washington last weekend, and Scott Eklund provides an update on how the rest of UW's official visits should go, as well as what might happen at the end of July.

The last segment finds the Dawgman guys delving into the new world of Name, Image, and Likeness and how it will impact Washington's student-athletes. And if the new rules could have been retroactively implemented, there definitely would have been some former Huskies benefitting from NIL.

DawgmanRadio: Catching up on the latest news Jun 17, 2021
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - decided it was a good time to catch up on all the latest Washington football news, as well as what's happening in the Pac-12 and in college football.

Right now, the story that's just beginning to ripple through the college football world but looks to have some real staying power is the one surrounding Arizona State and substantial recruiting violations that took place during the shortened 2020 season. A few former Pac-12 players and coaches have already commented on it and if the allegations are found to be true it would be a massive hammer blow to the Sun Devils, and one that would reverberate for years to come.

Next, the guys talk about the proposed 12-team college football playoff format, the winners and losers, and how the Pac-12 benefits from a super-sized playoff scenario. As always, it comes down to money and winning. But does the conference really benefit as much as you might think, especially compared to the real power players?

After a quick commercial break, the Dawgman guys talk about Wednesday's breaking news; 2021 defensive back prospect Davon Banks announced his verbal commitment to the Huskies, and Banks will make it official when he signs a scholarship agreement with UW on Friday.

Is Banks's situation a unique one? One where an injury and the coronavirus pandemic simply put him in the wrong place at the wrong time, ultimately found by the Huskies again at the last moment? Or will his case be one of many that emerge during the 2022 recruiting cycle due to the minimal amount of film being out there of 2021 seasons being shortened or canceled altogether in certain regions of the country, compounded by the fact that coaches couldn't recruit said prospects in person until just a couple of weeks ago?

Scott also updates us on UW's big recruiting weekend coming up at the end of the month, where they will be hosting five players on official visits. How many of those players could end up signing with the Huskies?

DawgmanRadio: It's going to be a busy June! Jun 02, 2021
    Show notes

With the shackles off, the Washington Football staff can now go recruit. The NCAA has lifted the dead period on recruiting, so that means the staff can not only host recruits on-campus and host their own camps, but they can also go coach at satellite camps up and down the west coast and their recruiting footprint.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - talk about how the Huskies will tackle the summer recruiting period, as well as a couple of the newest verbal commitments for the 2022 class; O'Dea OL Mark Nabou and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro OL Parker Brailsford.

Eklund and Fetters break down what they like in each player, and Grinolds offers up this scenario: what would the UW coaches do if two of the in-state OL prospects with current Washington offers not named Josh Conerly called up the same day asking to commit? What would Scott Huff do?

After a quick break, the guys go right back into more recruiting talk. Washington is hosting a very high-profile recruit this weekend - local 5-star DL/OLB J.T. Tuimoloau. The Huskies are Tuimoloau's first official visit; he still plans on visiting Alabama, Ohio State, USC, and Oregon before announcing which school he will attend.

The guys talk about Tuimoloau's recruitment, and how it should be seen as the standard for all 5-star players moving forward.

They wrap up the podcast with a little bit of Hoops recruiting news, a couple of players expected to visit Montlake, as well as a breakdown of the camps the UW coaches will be attending this summer as they continue to search for the talent that will take them to the next level.

DawgmanRadio: Checking out the UW Men’s Hoops scene with Beach May 05, 2021
    Show notes

Dawgman.com’s Kim Grinolds spoke Wednesday with the Head of Hoops - Aaron Beach - about all the comings and goings that have happened with the Washington Men’s Basketball team the last six weeks, including a number of verbal commitments and two new coaching signings.

They first talk about new assistant coaches Wyking Jones and Quincy Pondexter and how their west coast ties will certainly begin to pay dividends when it comes to upgrading the talent on the roster. Jones is the one who has the coaching chops, having been an assistant under such coaches as Paul Westphal, Steve Alford, and Rick Pitino. Pondexter is going to use his story as a Washington alum, pro player, and recent AAU coach to become a monster recruiter while he learns how to be a Division-1 coach under Mike Hopkins, Will Conroy, and Jones.

Next, Grinolds and Beach break down the recent Washington verbal commits, and there have been a lot of them. They started with the most recent one, former Stanford guard Daejon Davis, and why they feel like what Davis brings is the perfect fit for what the Huskies need right now.

Then they also talk about the other local guys that have returned home, Emmitt Matthews, Jr. and Terrell Brown, and how they’ll use their experiences at other programs to bring much-needed traits to Montlake, including a commitment to playing defense. Davis and Brown are actual cousins, and Grinolds and Beach talk about that relationship and how that will also play with the current group of Hoop Dawgs that have stayed from last year.

Next, they talk about the surprise commitment of former Alabama power forward Langston Wilson, the No. 1 juco PF in the country, and how he’ll compliment Nate Roberts and freshman Jackson Grant along the back line of the zone, as well as similarities to another recent UW forward.

After that, they talk about some other pieces that are out there that Washington could finish their 2021 recruiting class with, including former Nathan Hale, Garfield, and Findlay Prep star P.J. Fuller, who has been playing at TCU, and UTEP’s Bryson Williams.

To finish off the podcast, Grinolds and Beach project out the 2021 starting roster and how the new faces will fit in with who is already at Montlake. Do they think one or two of them will turn out to be the main scoring threats, or will it be more of a scoring-by-committee approach?

Here’s everything Jimmy Lake said after Washington’s Spring Game May 03, 2021
    Show notes

Here is everything Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake said after the Washington Spring Game, held this past Saturday at Husky Stadium.

DawgmanRadio - Recapping Purple's Big Win Over Gold May 02, 2021
    Show notes

The final practice of spring was an actual football game and the fans that were in the stands and those that watched it on the Pac 12 Network were treated to some big plays on offense and a defense that flew around and made things difficult on their offensive counterparts. It was a lot to take in but the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund, Chris Fetters and intern Jack McCauley -- broke down what they saw and gave their thoughts on the nearly three-hour practice.

The quarterback battle is one that everyone wants to figure out, including the coaches, but at this point in time it still looks like it will be a competition between Dylan Morris and Patrick O'Brien and, from what we saw on Saturday, Sam Huard might not be totally out of the race either.

They also talked about the receivers and the secondary and how difficult it is for the former to get any kind of separation. Is it because the receivers just aren't very good or because the defensive backs are some of the best in the country? They answer those questions and also gave their thoughts on some of the outstanding newcomers and walk-ons that are currently on the roster including Texas A&M transfer Jeremiah Martin who was one of the standouts of the day, tipping a couple of passes and generally making it almost impossible to run on the Husky defense.

They also talked about Cade Otton's one-handed touchdown grab and Elijah Jackson's impressive interception that set up a touchdown and a few other players who stood out.

Here's everything Jimmy Lake said after Day 13 of spring football Apr 28, 2021
    Show notes

Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake met with the media after UW's Day 13 spring football practice.

DawgmanRadio: Energy was at 13 on Day 13 Apr 28, 2021
    Show notes

Zion Tupuola-Fetui may be out for a while, but you can't switch off his competitive nature. The outside linebacker was rolling around Wednesday's practice on a scooter for his left leg, recently repaired after an Achilles rupture, but his voice certainly wasn't hurt.

After calling out guys during a 1-1 session between the offensive and defensive lines, walk-on OL Gage Harty had heard enough from ZTF. "Watch out, or I'm gonna come over and kick your wheel!" Harty said, laughing.

The verbal sparring definitely spilled over to the field, as the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - ran down the different situations that highlighted Day 13 of Washington's spring football campaign.

As per usual, UW Head Coach Jimmy Lake put the team into some unusual situations; second and goal from the 4-yard line with 4 seconds left, down 8. Only one of the quarterbacks was able to get a touchdown and a 2-point conversion - Sam Huard.

There was also situations coming out of the end zone that led the defense to win via a safety. But it was the red zone lock out at the end where the energy was bumped up way past 10. The defense ended up winning the period 20-15, but Huard was one completed pass away from spoiling the defense's mood for the day.

The Dawgman guys talked about the quarterback battle between Dylan Morris and Patrick O'Brien, as well as Huard slowing coming up for air after having been underwater for most of spring.

Talked turned to the defense and some of the standout performances, including those who had interceptions on the day; Kyler Gordon, James Smith, Jacobe Covington, and two picks by Brendan Radley-Hiles, who took one to the house while backup center Corey Luciano chased him all the way.

They also talked about Saturday's spring game, one where the fans should expect an actual game to break out. How refreshing! Cade Otton will captain the Purple team, while Jaxson Kirkland will captain the Gold team. The teams have been split up via draft, so hopefully, we'll get a roster we can share with you on game day.

Finally, the guys talk about the 2021 NFL Draft, which starts Thursday, and their opinions on where the four Huskies - Levi Onwuzurike, Joe Tryon, Elijah Molden, and Keith Taylor - will get drafted.

DawgmanRadio: Day 12 all about playing the game...with a twist Apr 26, 2021
    Show notes

Spring football isn’t just about the players getting prepared for the season ahead, it’s also about the coaches making sure they’re fully prepared to deal with everything that comes up.

And Jimmy Lake hasn’t been shy about throwing out all sorts of different game scenarios that tests the team’s ability to immediately react and perform under different levels of pressure.

Sometimes it’s a 4-minute drill where the offense is playing keep-away from the defense to salt away a win. Sometimes it’s the offense backed up deep in their own end, no time outs, and they have to score down three points.

No matter what Lake draws up at any point in time, just know that it could change at any moment, and it’s not just the players who have to roll with it.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - begin and end the Day 12 podcast talking about the different situations Lake has put the units in and how it has stressed the players and coaches alike. John Donovan talked about it specifically on Monday when he took questions from the media.

The guys also talk about who had big days on offense, starting with receiver Jalen McMillan, who had two pass plays of over 50 yards, as well as juco tight end Quentin Moore.

The talk also turned to the offensive line and how they’ve been quietly steady throughout spring, despite not having starting right tackle Victor Curne for the last week or so.

But the main talk on the offense has to do with the quarterbacks, no surprise there. Dylan Morris showed why he’s the number-one guy, but Patrick O'Brien continues to impress and has definitely earned the trust of the offensive coaches.

Moving to the running backs, Cameron Davis and Richard Newton were the ones who stood out the most on Monday, but we talk about where that position stands heading into the final week of spring.

Talk moved to the other side of the ball, with comments on Edefuan Ulofoshio playing some on the edges Monday, much like Josh Calvert did on Saturday - as well as players singled out by Defensive Coordinator Bob Gregory for their play to date, namely Cameron Williams, Kamren Fabiculanan, Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, and Bralen Trice.

We also talk about some of the defensive players who stood out, including Jacobe Covington, Meki Pei, and Mishael Powell.
