    Vegas, Baby! Mar 08, 2022
    Show notes

On Seattle band Gas Huffer's first record, singer Matt Wright's first words were "The end!" Of course the irony is not lost on the listener, as the first song of the album starts up right after those words.

Well, on Monday, Washington's Mike Hopkins waited until the very end of his media session to loudly utter "VEGAS, BABY!" but he should have said it right from the start. It's Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament week, and the sixth-seeded Huskies are heading to Sin City to take on number-11 seed Utah in the final first-round game Wednesday night on the Pac-12 Network. Tip-off is at 8:30 pm, or 30 minutes after the previous game.

Hopkins was asked about the Utes, the key to beating a team three times in a year, what to focus on now that it's tournament time, and he makes his case for why Terrell Brown, Jr. should be the Pac-12 Player of the Year.

And yes, Gas Huffer also has a song on that same album called "Going to Las Vegas".

Terrell Brown, Jr., Jamal Bey, Mike Hopkins talk about Senior Night win Mar 06, 2022
    Show notes

Every Senior Night is an emotional one, but it had to be doubly emotional for the three senior transfers who came back home to play at least one more year of basketball. Terrell Brown, Jr., Daejon Davis, and Emmitt Matthews, Jr. were three of nine Washington Huskies to walk on Senior Night Saturday, and for the first 10 minutes or so of their game against Oregon State, the emotions clearly got the better of them.

But the team eventually settled down, got some stops on defense which led to some transition baskets, and a 25-8 run to end the first half was exactly what UW needed to finish off their 2021-22 regular season in style. The 78-67 win over the Beavers meant the Huskies would have a winning league and overall record, a huge recovery from last year's 5-win season.

Brown, Jamal Bey, and Mike Hopkins met with the media after the win to talk about the game itself, the emotions involved, having momentum as the number-6 seed going into the Pac-12 Tournament, and more.

DawgmanRadio: Catching up with spring football, basketball, and recruiting Mar 05, 2022
    Show notes

This week is the week of the NFL Draft Combine, but we had so many other things to talk about, we never got there. We promise we will the next time.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - catch up for a long chat about what they expect to see from Washington's new-look offense in spring, as well as the end of the men's basketball season and also some recruiting updates, as Scott is hitting a camp in California.

To start the podcast, the guys flesh out their takes on their first three spring position previews that have already been published: Quarterback, Running Back, and Wide Receiver. How will everything look, who has the inside track at impressing, and who needs to show up? We even throw some offensive line talk to, especially with the thought that Jaxson Kirkland may return. That would throw a whole different kind of wrench in the works, and in a good way.

After that, we pick out a handful of players featured in Scott's recent article about the 10 players that need to step up in spring.

After a quick break to pay some bills, the talk turns to the end of the men's basketball season, the win over Oregon, and the fact that UW will have nine players walk for Senior Night against Oregon State. Will they all leave? Who might return?

And then Scott provides a recruiting update, including the fact that he's attending the Under Armour camp at Mission Viejo High School on Sunday. Expect to see a lot of coverage on the UW prospects he spoke to at the camp!

Mike Hopkins: Nine Seniors will walk on Senior Night Mar 04, 2022
    Show notes

Everyone was big smiles after Washington's 78-67 win over Oregon Thursday night, but then it started to dawn on the players - Saturday's Senior Night game versus Oregon State is the last game for at least a handful of players. Mike Hopkins confirmed after the Oregon win that nine players will walk on Saturday. He didn't name them, but there are nine current players - scholarship and walk-on - that are redshirt juniors and older.

    Jamal Bey

    Terrell Brown, Jr.

    Daejon Davis

    Jonah Geron

    Reagan Lundeen

    Emmitt Matthews, Jr.

    Noah Neubauer

    Nate Roberts

    Riley Sorn

Only Brown and Davis are the ones without any eligibility remaining.

Hopkins was joined post-game by Nate Roberts and Terrell Brown, who talked about the win over the Ducks, how they were able to turn around a double-digit loss in Eugene into a double-digit win in Seattle, the upcoming Senior Night, and more.

Mike Hopkins already thinking about an 'emotional but special' Senior Night Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

Washington Head Coach Mike Hopkins has one eye firmly focused on Washington's next opponent, the Oregon Ducks, but he's also letting his mind wander just a little bit toward Saturday's game too. That's because it's Senior Night, and it's the time to honor those who have given so much to the school and program. Hopkins was asked not only about how the Huskies will honor their players on Senior Night, but also about the legacy of a one-year player like Terrell Brown.

Coach Hop was also asked about Daejon Davis and the next men up tasked with picking up the slack in his absence; Cole Bajema and P.J. Fuller. He was asked about the evolution of the zone from the one he brought with him from Syracuse five years ago to the 'match' zone that is a hybrid of man and zone with switching principles involved. And how does that evolution show itself on the recruiting trail? How does UW now recruit with defense in mind?

Hop was also asked about the development of freshman Jackson Grant and any attention he's currently paying to the number of former UW players doing their thing in the NBA right now.

Huskies know they still have opportunities to help themselves going into tournament time Mar 01, 2022
    Show notes

Terrell Brown, Jr., Jamal Bey, and Mike Hopkins all spoke to the media after Washington's 77-66 loss to UCLA Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Here's what they had to say about the game, where the momentum turned in the Bruins' favor, losing Daejon Davis, and what they can do with two games left on the schedule (Oregon and Oregon State) before they finish out their season with the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.

Emmitt Matthews, Jr., Terrell Brown, Jr, and Mike Hopkins talk about big in-state rivalry win Feb 27, 2022

Emmitt Matthews, Jr., Terrell Brown, Jr., and Mike Hopkins spoke to the media after Washington's 78-70 win over Washington State Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena. Below is the full press conference audio, as well as selected quotes from each.

Mike Hopkins knows Huskies have their hands full with back-to-back games against Washington State Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

It's a situation Mike Hopkins probably never thought he'd ever deal with, but he's now had to do it twice in the past two seasons. Because of COVID and how the pandemic has wreaked havoc with scheduling, the Washington Huskies had to play Arizona State in back-to-back games in Tempe last season, and now the Huskies will play their in-state rivals from Washington State twice in four days, starting Wednesday.

In speaking to the media today, Hopkins showered the Cougars with praise for how they play on both ends of the court, as well as positive takeaways from playing three top-15 teams in a week and what it's going to take for the Huskies to finish the season strong. And lastly, he was asked for his thoughts on Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski coaching against each other for the final time ever this season and if he had any thoughts about going back to Syracuse after Boeheim eventually retires.

DawgmanRadio: Tina Langley Reflects On First Pac 12 Win On Senior Day Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

It was a long process, but it all paid off on Sunday when the Husky women's basketball team, 0-10 on the season in conference play, got their first conference win of the season with a 74-69 win over Arizona State at Alaska Airlines Arena. It wasn't just a win to get first-year head coach Tina Langley her first conference win, it also was a way to get the seniors a win in their last home game.

Langley met with the media on Monday and talked about what it meant to get the first win, if there was only going to be one, to come on Senior Night and what players like Nancy Mulkey and Missy Petersen have meant to the program since she took over.

She also addressed freshman guard Jayda Noble playing the most minutes she's played all season and her contributions to the winning effort.

Finally, Langley looked ahead at the final two games of the season, road games against a rebuilding Cal squad which is 11-10 on the season, but just 2-8 in conference play, and a team on the other end of the spectrum, second-ranked Stanford, which is currently 23-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference play.

DawgmanRadio: Langley And The Huskies Continue To Focus On The Process Feb 16, 2022
    Show notes

The 2021/2022 basketball season has not gone the way Tina Langley had hoped when she took over the Husky women's basketball program last year. Instead of dwelling on her team's struggles, she's remaining focused on the process of becoming the best team possible and setting the team up for success in the future.

On Wednesday, Langley met with the media to talk about the progress the team has made even with the results on the floor (5-13) not being where they want them to be.

She also talked about Washington's two opponents this weekend -- Arizona and Arizona State -- and the problems they will give the Huskies, lauding their defensive schemes and how hard the play every week.

Langley also talked about what were some things that have been an adjustment coming to the Pac 12 from Conference USA and the adjustments she has had to make.
