DawgmanRadio: Our Full Stanford Preview Show! Sep 24, 2022
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - are back on the airwaves talking about Washington's opponent this weekend, the Stanford Cardinal. And while the Cardinal had a bye week to get healthy and regroup after a 41-28 loss to USC, they are walking a little wounded coming to Seattle for this Pac-12 matchup.

With no EJ Smith, the Cardinal (1-1) will have to rely on Casey Filkins to help fill the running back responsibilities, and it looks like either Barrett Miller or Connor McLaughlin will have to replace starting right tackle Myles Hinton, who won't be making the trip up north.

The guys talked first about Stanford's offense, what Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee will have to do without Smith to help balance out their offensive attack, and also a bunch of talk about the wrinkle David Shaw debuted versus USC, the 'slow mesh' RPO game. Originally designed by the coaches at Wake Forest, will the new twist in Stanford's offense cause issues for Washington, or will they continue to pin their ears back and go full tilt for the backfield, led by their talented EDGE players?

After a quick break, the guys turn the tables and talk about one of the biggest storylines going in all of college football right now; the massive resurgence of Washington's offense under the leadership of first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer and Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb. Indiana transfer quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has been nothing short of outstanding through the first three games of the season, throwing for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns in their last game, a win over No. 9/11 Michigan State that catapulted Penix into early Heisman Trophy discussions.

The guys talked about Richard Newton perhaps being the answer to UW's short-yardage and goal line concerns, as well as how well the receiving corps is doing and how their play has done nothing but open up big opportunities for the tight ends to make their mark in the receiving game.

Stanford did make a fundamental scheme change during the offseason, going from a 3-4 base defense to an even front that may resemble Washington's 4-2-5 base.

After another quick break, Scott updated us on the latest recruiting scuttlebutt coming out of this past weekend, and Kim also provided a quick hoops recruiting update too, as the Huskies have been hosting a couple of official visitors.

DawgmanRadio: Previewing the Stanford Cardinal with Jackson Moore Sep 23, 2022
    Show notes

Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week to Jackson Moore of Cardinal247, the 247Sports site that covers the team the Washington Huskies host this weekend, the Stanford Cardinal.

To start, Moore breaks down the Stanford offense, a unit that will be missing its top running back in EJ Smith. But they have added a new wrinkle in the 'slow mesh' RPO that Wake Forest uses, and Moore talked about that. Jackson also goes through the top targets that Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee will lean on to help move the Cardinal offense down the field. Moore also gives his opinion on the position group he feels is holding the offense back.

After a quick break, the talk turned to the defense. Stanford did give up 41 points and 505 yards of total offense. Moore talked about the much more publicized change in their defensive scheme from a 3-4 to an even front to help shore up concerns along the defensive line. Jackson mentioned the defensive players UW fans should pay attention to when the Huskies have the ball on offense.

Moore also gives a couple of keys on how he thinks Stanford's defense can be beaten (hint: it starts along the line of scrimmage).

Moving to special teams, Moore notes a potential dilemma for Stanford; Casey Filkins is considered their best returner, but without EJ Smith, would they risk having Filkins back there since he is also their top available running back?

To finish the preview off, Moore talks about a couple of keys for Stanford to be able to pull the victory, as well as what UW could do against the Cardinal to win at home.

DawgmanRadio: Breaking down what the coaches and players said ahead of the Stanford game Sep 22, 2022
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - break down the top storylines coming out of Washington's 39-28 win over Michigan State, as well as what to look for this coming weekend after talking to the players and coaches. The Huskies host the Stanford Cardinal Saturday night at Husky Stadium. The Cardinal are 1-1 and fresh off a bye week.

To start, the guys talked about what UW Head Coach Kalen DeBoer and the two coordinators - Ryan Grubb and William Inge - had to say this week, specifically about the lack of physicality and efficiency at the goal line in the run game.

Talk also turned to talk of DeBoer potentially being a candidate at Nebraska, a thought roundly shot down. And would some of his assistants be looking to become head coaches down the road, like Grubb?

After the coaching carousel discussion, the guys then talk about some of the conversations they had with the UW players, namely Julius Irvin and Michael Penix, Jr.. Could a Heisman Trophy winner this year come from outside the Big Ten or SEC?

Back to the coaches, the conversation went to discussions had this week, including Nick Sheridan and Scott Huff.

They finish off the chat with their final thoughts heading into the Stanford game, where the Huskies are trying to get to their first 4-0 start since 2017.

DawgmanRadio: Sorting out a historic 39-28 win over Michigan State Sep 18, 2022
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - made their way through the throng of fans and students to press row and rehash a famous 39-28 win for the Washington Huskies, one 21 years in the making.

The year 2001 was the last year UW won a home game over a ranked Power-5 non-conference opponent, and it happened to be MSU's neighbors from Ann Arbor. But this year's Huskies made quick work of the Spartans, pushing out to a 36-14 third quarter lead before the visitors made a full-throated push to get back in the ballgame.

In the first part of the podcast, the guys talked about the environment and how Washington was able to get on top of the game quickly - mostly due to the play of quarterback Michael Penix, who finished with 397 yards and four touchdowns. They also talked about the historic game of receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, who caught six passes for 153 yards and three scores, the last one being a 53-yard bomb that looked to put the Spartans away before their furious comeback.

After a quick break, talk turned to the defensive side of the ball, and how the Huskies were able to make Michigan State go one-dimensional due to their need to score a lot of points quickly. Credit is due to MSU quarterback Payton Thorne, who passed for over 160 yards in the fourth quarter alone, but the Huskies were able to find sudden-change plays when they needed them most to keep the visitors at bay.

To finish the podcast, Scott provided a quick update on the recruits that were at the game, including some on official visits and a host of others that were visiting from out of state. There were a number of committed prospects at Husky Stadium, including Anthony James, Zachary Henning, Kahlee Tafai, Diesel Gordon, and others.

And then the three gave their final thoughts on what they saw, including what the win means in the short term, as well as how it might play longer term in recruiting and also with the culture piece that Kalen DeBoer and his staff are in the middle of rebuilding. Trust and belief were two words DeBoer used a lot in his post-game press conference.
