The Interns Podcast: 2023 Running Backs Preview Aug 16, 2023
    Show notes

The Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - are back with their own spin on how the Washington Huskies will do in 2023, and they are going to break down a number of the position groups.

Today they tackle the running backs room, one that is losing a lot of production with Wayne Taulapapa's graduation, but they also have some veterans returning with Cameron Davis and Richard Newton, as well as a number of transfers. Will Nixon moved last year from Nebraska, and UW picked up two more transfers in Daniyel Ngata from Arizona State and Dillon Johnson from Mississippi State.

Jack and Luke start with the recent transfers and what they should bring to the mix, and then work their way toward the backs already on the roster.

Then the guys talk about some of the other newer additions, starting with true freshman Tybo Rogers. Without knowing the specifics of Rogers' situation and why he isn't practicing right now with the Huskies, both Jack and Luke proceed like he will be available for UW once the season starts. Will he play more than four games in 2023? How will the coaches like to use him? And what about sophomore Sam Adams?

After giving their initial thoughts on the players they expect to play this fall, they go more in-depth on how they think the room as a whole will be used. Will the coaches try and find a 1000-yard rusher? Will they go more by committee? Will they be transparent when looking to spring their running backs in the passing game? And how much will pass protection factor into playing time?

To finish up the podcast, Jack and Luke create their own pecking order and expectations for this year compared to last season.

DawgmanRadio: Fall Camp Continues On And Michael Penix Jr. Takes First Team Reps Aug 15, 2023
    Show notes

Day 11 of Washington's fall camp is in the books and there were definitely some things to discuss. The guys from Dawgman.com -- Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters -- were on hand for the two-hour (plus) workout and they went through everything that stood out to them.

For the first time in a week, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was behind center during the team periods of the practice. He didn't look like he missed a beat, making laser-like throws to his wideouts and connecting on some long passes that resulted in touchdowns.

Not to be outdone, Dylan Morris had another very solid practice and continues to impress with his poise and play-making ability.

Another player who has been easing his way into things is tailback Dillon Johnson. Since his return to full action, he's seen a few carries and reps with the first team, but he saw quite a few reps with the ones on Tuesday.

The guys then turned their attention to some of the different plays they saw and all of the ways the defense was changing their looks and disguising their coverages.

Eric Schmidt Goes In-Depth on the Preparation that has Given His Group an Edge in Year Two Aug 14, 2023
    Show notes

Dawgman.com recently spoke with Washington EDGE Coach Eric Schmidt about the offseason work that his players have put in to get themselves in position to impact the defense in 2023, and you might be surprised at what they worked on. Schmidt already has two veterans in Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui that he can lean on, but he also added another experienced player in Voi Tunuufi to his room.

Schmidt talked about the steps his veterans are making to round out their games ahead of their final season on Montlake, as well as things the room did as a whole to up their games. The work behind the scenes with Washington's Strength and Conditioning staff has really paid off, according to Schmidt, and it goes way beyond just getting bigger, stronger, and faster. Cross-training has become a real theme for the Huskies, and it's happening year-around.

Kalen DeBoer: Michael Penix Jr. Took First-Team Reps During Saturday's Scrimmage Aug 12, 2023
    Show notes

Washington Head Coach Kalen DeBoer addressed the media Saturday after one of UW's big scrimmage days of fall camp, and he spoke the words that every Husky fans wanted to hear; Michael Penix was back and taking reps with the first team. After missing almost all the team period reps resting his arm this past week, the senior quarterback was apparently full-go for Saturday's scrimmage and took the number of reps you'd expect him to take in preparation for the 2023 season ahead.

DeBoer also took questions about both sides of the line of scrimmage, players that stood out to him during the scrimmage, the status of UW's kicking jobs, as well as the play of true freshman quarterback Austin Mack.

DawgmanRadio: Ryan Grubb Talks About Shutting Michael Penix Jr. Down Aug 11, 2023
    Show notes

Dawgman.com spoke with Ryan Grubb a couple of times this week, once when Michael Penix Jr appeared fine, and then after the coaches shut Penix down from throwing during almost every meaningful session during the last handful of UW practices.

Grubb was candid and transparent about the decision to hold Penix back and give the reps to Dylan Morris and Austin Mack, and also spoke on the other positions on offense, and how well the team has dealt with the outside distraction of next year's move to the Big Ten.

JaMarcus Shephard: We Should Be Hungrier Than Ever Aug 11, 2023
    Show notes

Washington Receivers Coach JaMarcus Shephard spoke to the media this week, and the message was very clear; this UW team hasn't won anything yet. In Shephard's mind, that should make this team 'hungrier than ever'. In this 10-minute interview, he spoke about that hunger, how this team is trying to emulate what the 1991 Huskies did coming off a strong 1990 season, the work of individual players, going to the Big Ten next season, and more.

DawgmanRadio: A Damp One on Day Six of Fall Camp as the Huskies Work Through the Dawg Days Aug 09, 2023
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - try to dry themselves off after a day Day 6 of fall camp, held Wednesday at Husky Stadium.

It was a day where the emphasis was placed on short yardage, third and fourth down, as well as red zone opportunities. And for the most part the offense did what you'd expect a high-powered offense to do; score often.

But the defense also had their moments, and certainly had plenty of the game go their way when the team periods were set more between the 20s.

To start, the guys talked about some of the conversations they had with the offensive players and coaches after practice, with a fine point on what went on with the offensive line during the team's first day in full pads. How much has the depth chart changed or stayed the same? Who is making moves? And how much competition for places is going to happen as the team moves forward?

Wednesday was also the third practice in a row where Michael Penix Jr didn't throw during the team periods. Those periods went exclusively again to Dylan Morris and Austin Mack.

Is Penix's absence from these periods something UW fans should be concerned about? Scott talked to Washington Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb after practice to get his thoughts on his Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, and what would happen if UW had a game to play this weekend.

Talk then moved to the rest of the offensive position groups, with who stood out Wednesday as well as overall through these first six practices.

After a quick commercial break, the talk then turned to the defensive side of the ball, starting with the front seven. The defensive line might be down a player or two but the quality of depth is as good as it has been in a while.

Moving to the linebackers, you could definitely say the same for the inside defenders, who have legitimately five players that should play a ton of snaps this coming season.

And in the secondary, groups of cornerbacks are starting to sort themselves out, and others - like former Oregon CB Darren Barkins - are slowly but surely making moves.

DawgmanRadio: Who Won Day Five of Fall Camp? Aug 08, 2023
    Show notes

Opinions varied on whether it was the offense or the defense that got the upper hand Tuesday during Day Five of Washington's fall camp, held at Husky Stadium.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund, and Chris Fetters - all came with different takes, but also with the understanding that both sides of the ball did some very good things while Michael Penix Jr sat out his second-straight day. Head Coach Kalen DeBoer told the media after that nothing is wrong with Penix, it was just another day for him to help him with his load management on his arm.

It gave even more reps to Dylan Morris and Austin Mack to share, and Eklund thought Morris may have had his best day of practice in the Purple and Gold that he's seen. He started out with a deep throw to Will Nixon early in practice and seemed to generally be in command of the offense. The true freshman Mack had his ups and downs as you would expect for a 17-year-old, but it's clear the stage is not too big for him.

The guys also talked about the running backs and the receivers, who have stood out and who took advantage of their turns on Tuesday. Probably the biggest name that stood out was sophomore Germie Bernard. With Denzel Boston a little nicked up and not practicing at 100 percent, Bernard took charge and had a couple of very nice connections down the field with Mack, the last one going for 65 yards and a score. It was coincidentally the last play of the practice.

After a quick break to pay some bills, the guys come back and talk about the other side of the ball. The Huskies came up with three interceptions on 'Takeaway Tuesday', one from Davon Banks, another from Elijah Jackson, and the final one came when Carson Bruener jumped a route and picked Morris off on a play that looked like it would have been destined for pay dirt.

The guys talked about the other defensive standouts, including Alphonzo Tuputala - who is finally getting a chance to play in something other than a yellow jersey.

The guys give their final thoughts on the day, and Kim also gave a reminder to anyone that wants to sign up for Run To Win's Legends Football Luncheon. Kim is MC'ing the event, one that will include Greg Lewis, Justin Glenn, JaMarcus Shephard, and more! The luncheon is in Club Husky and starts at Noon, but if you register you can come early to see the end of practice.
