DawgmanRadio: How is coronavirus affecting UW Athletics? Mar 13, 2020
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together Friday morning for a podcast to update how the coronavirus has affected UW Athletics and what the outlook is moving forward.

Grinolds has been traveling and is now back from the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament, which was subsequently canceled, so we felt it was a good time to not only update everyone on the latest with the hoops team but also what is happening with regard to spring football and whether or not it's going to take place.

What are the odds Jaden McDaniels and Isaiah Stewart come back to UW for their second seasons? The guys talk about that scenario, as well as how Mike Hopkins moves on if they both decide to turn pro.

This would be a time where the UW Football staff would be hosting recruits on campus, and they've done a bunch of that to date, but now all recruiting for all sports, on or off-campus, is suspended until mid-April, meaning even if spring football were to happen they couldn't host recruits for at least half of spring. And what does UW's self-imposed measures for sporting activities and events until the end of March mean for Washington's combine day and pro day?

Scott Eklund also talks about a few of the latest prospects to be offered by the Huskies, including former Inglemoor start Quentin Moore.

The guys talk about all of the ramifications of the coronavirus and how it's going to be a very long spring at Montlake while the various sports look to pick up the pieces and figure out how they can salvage their seasons, if at all, and also what the NCAA is doing about restoring eligibility for those student-athletes who have been affected the most.

DawgmanRadio: Pac-12 Tournament preview with Aaron Beach Mar 10, 2020
    Show notes

Seemingly dead in the water a week ago, the Washington Huskies are back on top of the wave again, ready to pull off the shocker of all shockers; win four games in four days to take the Pac-12 Tournament.

Oregon did it last year, so why not UW right now?

The Huskies play Arizona Wednesday at 2:30 pm on the Pac-12 Network, an ironic matchup considering UW just beat the Wildcats 69-63 Saturday night in Tucson. UW has found a spark and things came together in the desert, as they also beat Arizona State 90-83 two days earlier.

But how? And why now, of all times? In some ways, Washington has always been close to winning a lot more games this year, but in the way they pulled out close games last year en route to the regular-season Pac-12 title, they found more than enough ways to capitulate late in games this season. Whether it was not making key shots, either in the field or at the foul line, not getting stops down the stretch, turning the ball over, losing composure, etc... it's usually been a combination of all of those things.

The last two games has shown the conference why the Huskies were picked third in the media preseason poll. They have the pieces in place, and the chemistry is starting to gel at the right time.

Dawgman.com's Chris Fetters caught up with the undisputed Head of Hoops, Aaron Beach, to talk to him about the last couple of games and the momentum generated as Washington heads to Vegas with hopes of doing the improbable. It's the only way they get to a post-season tournament, so why not?

They talk about the maturation of Jaden McDaniels, the steady hustle and flow of Isaiah Stewart, the ability of Nahziah Carter and Jamal Bey to find buckets and impact the game, as well as the emergence of Marcus Tsohonis and Elijah Hardy when it comes to running the team and getting them going in the half-court.

But with the possibility of Quade Green being available to play (we talk a little about the hypotheticals involved, but we have no news as to whether or not he'll be cleared to play at any point during the tournament), how does that aspect throw a wrench into the works? And if he does play, who would he line up with best?

Finally, we talk a little bit about Washington's road to the final, which would have to go through Arizona, USC, and most likely Oregon in the semifinals. Could Washington avenge their 20-point championship final loss from last year? If there was ever a time Oregon could be ripe for picking, it just might be now.

Mike Hopkins looking high and low for a spark Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

He's seen it first hand. Whether it was Oregon last year going on a run to win the Pac-12 Tournament, or even going as far back as 2006, Mike Hopkins witnessed Gerry McNamara's heroics as Syracuse became the first Big East team to win four games in the Big East Tournament to earn a ticket to the Big Dance.

With McNamara, it was a running one-handed three-pointer to beat Cincinnati at the buzzer, followed by an improbable upset of then number-one Connecticut. Wins over Georgetown and Pittsburgh followed, giving the Orange one of the craziest league tournament titles of all-time.

All it took was a spark. But currently at 3-13 in the league, the Washington Huskies need a lot more than a spark. They need an electrical storm the likes of which we have never seen before.

But it's been a crazy year, and to not expect more craziness would be even weirder, because it's named March Madness for a reason. And this particular group of Huskies has lost close games by nearly every way imaginable - much in the same way they won those same exact games a year earlier.

Who knows if that spark can come in the desert - the unlikeliest of places for Washington - but it has to come now, or never.

Nahziah Carter, Jaden McDaniels, andMike Hopkinsspoke to the media after Washington's 78-74 loss to Washington State Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. The loss took the Huskies to 3-13 in Pac-12 play and 13-16 overall.

UW finding their way back as Sam Timmins plays final home game Feb 27, 2020
    Show notes

Sam Timmins wasn't going to wait that much longer, because he doesn't have that much longer to go. In fact, the senior from Dunedin, New Zealand, is set to start his 61st, and final home game for the Washington Huskies (13-15, 3-12) Friday night against cross-state rivals Washington State (14-14, 5-10). So needless to say, he's happy that the Huskies finally broke their 9-game losing streak with a resounding 35-point win over California, but the Cougars will be a different test.

The senior center went from being a starter his first two seasons to a role player under UW Head Coach Mike Hopkins, but his commitment to Washington has never wavered, even when he could have gone elsewhere.

The media spoke with Timmins and Hopkins Wednesday on a number of subjects. Timmins talked about his road to Seattle, his official visit to UW, and staying with the Huskies even when Lorenzo Romar left. Hopkins talked about the improvements made by the Huskies between the Stanford and Cal games, what they need to do defensively to slow WSU down, and the impact Timmins has made on the program.

Sam Timmins, Nahziah Carter, andMike Hopkinsspoke to the media Thursday night after Washington blew a halftime lead, eventually losing to Stanford 72-64 in Seattle. It was the ninth-straight defeat for the Huskies, who are now 2-12 in Pac-12 Conference play.

DawgmanRadio: Brandon Huffman digs into the 2021 re-rankings Feb 20, 2020
    Show notes

Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke Friday morning with 247Sports' National Recruiting Editor Brandon Huffman, who also happens to live in the greater Seattle area, to break down the new 2021 recruiting re-rankings, how the re-rankings are done, and why this particular set of re-rankings is very important.

A prospect's junior season is their moving year. It's the time where they really get on the recruiting radar and colleges start following them heavily and/or offer them and try and get them to visit their campuses.

With so many top in-state prospects included in the 2021 class, including the national No. 1 player who lives 30 minutes away from Montlake (J.T. Tuimoloau), it felt important to get a detailed breakdown on just how the 247Sports' recruiting experts get together and communicate with each other to come up with a comprehensive national ranking of the top players that they can justify to their membership.

Huffman also gives his opinion on all the top local 2021 prospects, including Tuimoloau, UW QB commit Sam Huard, Steilacoom ATH Emeka Egbuka, Julien Simon, Owen Prentice, Clay Millen, Junior Alexander, Jabez Tinae, Will Latu, as well as some names of local players who aren't necessarily household names now but will become known as the months go on, and that includes prospects for future classes.

Huskies still searching for answers the second time through Feb 20, 2020
    Show notes

Mike Hopkins said it best; you have the answers to the test. That's the way it is when you're playing in your conference, and the Washington Huskies are now in the middle of playing against league foes the second time around.

It just so happens that their current eight-game slide started in Palo Alto, shortly after the Huskies learned their point guard, Quade Green, would be ineligible for the rest of the season through the Pac-12 Tournament.

It's not exactly a coincidence that Green's exclusion was at the same time the Huskies lost their way, but the correlation of the two events doesn't imply causation. Washington was still up double-digits against Stanford in the second half before UW started turning the ball over, missing every free throw, and the Cardinal hit every three-point shot they looked at.

What's interesting is that Stanford was 13-2 at the time of their win over UW, but since that time they've gone 3-7, including a current 4-game losing streak.

So Thursday's showdown in Seattle feels like a battle of who wants it more.

UW Head Coach Mike Hopkins talked about taking that opportunity, what they've been working on to shore up deficiencies on both sides of the ball, and also about the Board of Regents approving construction of a men's and women's basketball facility.

The media also talked to freshman point guard Marcus Tsohonis about the difficulty of playing through this current losing streak, how much he's putting on himself for that, and what it's going to take to put an end to the losing.

DawgmanRadio - Mock combine, Jabez Tinae offer Feb 15, 2020
    Show notes

The guys from Dawgman were at the Starfire Training Facility on Friday to watch several former Huskies as they went through the paces in a "Mock Combine".

They talked about what each of them saw as well as what each heard during their interviews with all six of the Dawgs on hand -- Trey Adams, Benning Potoa'e, Jared Hilbers, Salvon Ahmed, Hunter Bryant and Chico McClatcher -- as well as their thoughts on the recent offer to 2021 Kennedy Catholic (Burien, Wa.) wide receiver Jabez Tinae.

What does the talented wideout bring to the table and how many receivers will Washington take in the 2021 class? That is discussed as well.

The Husky coaches have also extended their recruiting reach to some areas outside the usual Pac 12 footprint with offers out to prospects in Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Iowa. What does that mean and why were they doing it?

All of those topics and more are discussed in today's podcast.
