    Daily Gospel Exegesis

This is a short daily podcast, where we go through an exegesis of the gospel reading from the current day’s Mass.
The Catholic Church teaches that in order to understand the Scriptures, we must start with the literal sense – in other words, how the original hearers of the text would have understood it.
That is our aim in this podcast – to help understand what the gospel writers (and more importantly, Jesus) were intending to communicate in today’s reading, as well as providing links to the Catechism. Each episode is short and designed to be listened to before or after attending daily Mass.

This podcast follows the calendar and Mass readings for the General Roman Lectionary. Therefore, all Gospel readings are taken from The Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright © 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Hodder & Stoughton and by Doubleday, a division of Random House, Inc.

Mark 8: 22-26 - 'The blind man was cured and could see everything distinctly.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs::

    - 1151 (in 'Signs and Symbols') - Signs taken up by Christ. In his preaching the Lord Jesus often makes use of the signs of creation to make known the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. He performs healings and illustrates his preaching with physical signs or symbolic gestures (abbreviated)

    - 1504 (in 'Christ the Physician') - Often Jesus asks the sick to believe. He makes use of signs to heal: spittle and the laying on of hands, mud and washing. The sick try to touch him, “for power came forth from him and healed them all. And so in the sacraments Christ continues to “touch” us in order to heal us.

    - 699 (in 'Symbols of the Holy Spirit') - The hand. Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them (abbreviated)

Luke 6: 17, 20-26 - 'Happy are you who are poor, who are hungry, who weep.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 2444 (in 'Love for the Poor') - The Church's love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant tradition." This love is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes, of the poverty of Jesus, and of his concern for the poor. Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to "be able to give to those in need." It extends not only to material poverty but also to the many forms of cultural and religious poverty.

    - 2546-2547 (in 'Poverty of Heart') - "Blessed are the poor in spirit." The Beatitudes reveal an order of happiness and grace, of beauty and peace. Jesus celebrates the joy of the poor, to whom the Kingdom already belongs: The Word speaks of voluntary humility as "poverty in spirit"; the Apostle gives an example of God's poverty when he says: "For your sakes he became poor." The Lord grieves over the rich, because they find their consolation in the abundance of goods. "Let the proud seek and love earthly kingdoms, but blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven." Abandonment to the providence of the Father in heaven frees us from anxiety about tomorrow. Trust in God is a preparation for the blessedness of the poor. They shall see God.

Luke 5: 1-11 - 'They left everything and followed him.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 208 (in 'I am who I am') - Faced with God's fascinating and mysterious presence, man discovers his own insignificance. Before the burning bush, Moses takes off his sandals and veils his face in the presence of God's holiness. Before the glory of the thrice-holy God, Isaiah cries out: "Woe is me! I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips." Before the divine signs wrought by Jesus, Peter exclaims: "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. But because God is holy, he can forgive the man who realizes that he is a sinner before him (abbreviated).

Luke 1: 1-4, 4: 14-21 - 'This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 1286 (in 'Confirmation in the Economy of Salvation') - In the Old Testament the prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the hoped-for Messiah for his saving mission (abbreviated)

    - 436 (in 'Christ') - It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at once as king and priest, and also as prophet. Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet, and king (abbreviated)

    - 695 (in 'Symbols of the Holy Spirit') - Its full force can be grasped only in relation to the primary anointing accomplished by the Holy Spirit, that of Jesus. Christ (in Hebrew “messiah”) means the one “anointed” by God’s Spirit. There were several anointed ones of the Lord in the Old Covenant, pre-eminently King David. But Jesus is God’s Anointed in a unique way: the humanity the Son assumed was entirely anointed by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit established him as “Christ" (abbreviated).

    - 714 (in 'Expectations of the Messiah and his spirit') - This is why Christ inaugurates the proclamation of the Good News by making his own the following passage from Isaiah: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

    - 544 (in 'The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God') - The kingdom belongs to the poor and lowly, which means those who have accepted it with humble hearts. Jesus is sent to “preach good news to the poor” (abbreviated)

    - 2443 (in 'Love for the Poor') - When “the poor have the good news preached to them,” it is the sign of Christ’s presence (abbreviated)

    - 1168 (in 'The Liturgical Year') - Beginning with the Easter Triduum as its source of light, the new age of the Resurrection fills the whole liturgical year with its brilliance. Gradually, on either side of this source, the year is transfigured by the liturgy. It really is a “year of the Lord’s favor" (abbreviated)

Mark 16: 15-18 - 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 977 (in' One Baptism for the Forgiveness of Sins') - Our Lord tied the forgiveness of sins to faith and Baptism: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved" (abbreviated)

    - 1223 (in 'Christ's Baptism') - After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (abbreviated)

    - 888 (in 'The Teaching Office') - Bishops, with priests as co-workers, have as their first task “to preach the Gospel of God to all men,” in keeping with the Lord’s command. They are “heralds of faith, who draw new disciples to Christ; they are authentic teachers” of the apostolic faith “endowed with the authority of Christ.”

    - 161 (in 'The Necessity of Faith') - Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation (abbreviated)

    - 183 (in 'Faith') - Faith is necessary for salvation. The Lord himself affirms: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mk 16:16).

    - 1253 (in 'Faith and Baptism') - Baptism is the sacrament of faith (abbreviated)

    - 1257 (in 'The Necessity of Baptism') - The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them. Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are “reborn of water and the Spirit.” God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments.

    - 670 (in 'Christ already reigns through the church') - Christ’s kingdom already manifests its presence through the miraculous signs that attend its proclamation by the Church (abbreviated)

    - 1507 (in 'Heal the sick') - The risen Lord renews this mission (“In my name . . . they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”) and confirms it through the signs that the Church performs by invoking his name. These signs demonstrate in a special way that Jesus is truly “God who saves.”

    - 434 (in 'Jesus') - The evil spirits fear his name; in his name his disciples perform miracles, for the Father grants all they ask in this name (abbreviated)

    - 1673 (in 'Various forms of sacramentals') - When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism. Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing (abbreviated)

John 2: 1-11 - 'My hour has not come yet; do whatever he tells you.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 2618 (in 'The Prayer of the Virgin Mary') - The Gospel reveals to us how Mary prays and intercedes in faith. At Cana, The mother of Jesus asks her son for the needs of a wedding feast; this is the sign of another feast - that of the wedding of the Lamb where he gives his body and blood at the request of the Church, his Bride (abbreviated).

    - 1613 (in 'Marriage in the Lord') - On the threshold of his public life Jesus performs his first sign - at his mother's request - during a wedding feast. The Church attaches great importance to Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's presence.

    - 495 (in 'Mary's Divine Motherhood') - Called in the Gospels "the mother of Jesus", Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as "the mother of my Lord". In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father's eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly "Mother of God" (Theotokos).

    - 1335 (in 'The Signs of Bread and Wine') - The miracles of the multiplication of the loaves, when the Lord says the blessing, breaks and distributes the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, prefigure the superabundance of this unique bread of his Eucharist. The sign of water turned into wine at Cana already announces the Hour of Jesus' glorification. It makes manifest the fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father's kingdom, where the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the Blood of Christ.
