    Daily Gospel Exegesis

This is a short daily podcast, where we go through an exegesis of the gospel reading from the current day’s Mass.
The Catholic Church teaches that in order to understand the Scriptures, we must start with the literal sense – in other words, how the original hearers of the text would have understood it.
That is our aim in this podcast – to help understand what the gospel writers (and more importantly, Jesus) were intending to communicate in today’s reading, as well as providing links to the Catechism. Each episode is short and designed to be listened to before or after attending daily Mass.

This podcast follows the calendar and Mass readings for the General Roman Lectionary. Therefore, all Gospel readings are taken from The Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright © 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Hodder & Stoughton and by Doubleday, a division of Random House, Inc.

Luke 7: 11-17 - 'The only son of his mother, and she a widow.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 994 (in 'The Progressive revelation of the Resurrection') - Already now in this present life he gives a sign and pledge of this by restoring some of the dead to life, announcing thereby his own Resurrection, though it was to be of another order (abbreviated).

    - 1503 (in 'Christ the Physician') - Christ's compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that "God has visited his people" and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of. His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that he identifies himself with them: "I was sick and you visited me." His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them.

Luke 18: 9-14 - 'The tax collector, not the Pharisee, went home justified.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 2559 (in 'Prayer as God's gift') - "Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God." But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or "out of the depths" of a humble and contrite heart? He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer, Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought," are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."

    - 2613 (in 'Jesus teaches us how to pray') - Three principal parables on prayer are transmitted to us by St. Luke: - the third parable, "the Pharisee and the tax collector," concerns the humility of the heart that prays. "God, be merciful to me a sinner!" the Church continues to make this prayer its own: Kyrie eleison! (abbreviated).

    - 588 (in 'Jesus and Israel's faith in one God and Saviour') - Jesus scandalized the Pharisees by eating with tax collectors and sinners as familiarly as with themselves. Against those among them "who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others", Jesus affirmed: "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

    - 2631 (in 'Prayer of Petition') - The first movement of the prayer of petition is asking forgiveness, like the tax collector in the parable: "God, be merciful to me a sinner!" It is a prerequisite for righteous and pure prayer. A trusting humility brings us back into the light of communion between the Father and his Son Jesus Christ and with one another, so that "we receive from him whatever we ask." (abbreviated)

    - 2667 (in 'Prayer to Jesus') - This simple invocation of faith developed in the tradition of prayer under many forms in East and West. the most usual formulation, transmitted by the spiritual writers of the Sinai, Syria, and Mt. Athos, is the invocation, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners." It combines the Christological hymn of Philippians 2:6-11 with the cry of the publican and the blind men begging for light. By it the heart is opened to human wretchedness and the Savior's mercy.

    - 2839 (in 'and forgive us our trespasses') - With bold confidence, we began praying to our Father. In begging him that his name be hallowed, we were in fact asking him that we ourselves might be always made more holy. But though we are clothed with the baptismal garment, we do not cease to sin, to turn away from God. Now, in this new petition, we return to him like the prodigal son and, like the tax collector, recognize that we are sinners before him. Our petition begins with a "confession" of our wretchedness and his mercy. Our hope is firm because, in his Son, "we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." We find the efficacious and undoubted sign of his forgiveness in the sacraments of his Church.

Luke 18: 1-8 - 'The parable of the unjust judge.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 2098 (In 'Adoration of God') - The acts of faith, hope, and charity enjoined by the first commandment are accomplished in prayer. Lifting up the mind toward God is an expression of our adoration of God: prayer of praise and thanksgiving, intercession and petition. Prayer is an indispensable condition for being able to obey God’s commandments. “[We] ought always to pray and not lose heart.”

    - 675 (In 'The Church's ultimate trial') - Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. (abbreviation)

Luke 10: 1-9 - 'Your peace will rest on that man.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 765 (in 'The Church - Instituted by Christ Jesus') - The Twelve and the other disciples share in Christ's mission and his power, but also in his lot (abbreviated).

    - 2611 (in 'Jesus teaches us how to pray') - The prayer of faith consists not only in saying "Lord, Lord," but in disposing the heart to do the will of the Father. Jesus calls his disciples to bring into their prayer this concern for cooperating with the divine plan.

    - 2122 (in 'Irreligion') - The minister should ask nothing for the administration of the sacraments beyond the offerings defined by the competent authority, always being careful that the needy are not deprived of the help of the sacraments because of their poverty." The competent authority determines these "offerings" in accordance with the principle that the Christian people ought to contribute to the support of the Church's ministers. "The laborer deserves his food.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 586 (In 'Jesus & The Temple') - Far from having been hostile to the Temple, where he gave the essential part of his teaching, Jesus was willing to pay the Temple-tax, associating with him Peter, whom he had just made the foundation of his future Church (abbreviated).

Luke 17: 5-10 - 'Say, 'We are merely servants.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

    - 162 (In 'Perseverance in Faith) - Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man. We can lose this priceless gift, as St. Paul indicated to St. Timothy: “Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith.” To live, grow, and persevere in the faith until the end we must nourish it with the word of God; we must beg the Lord to increase our faith; it must be “working through charity,” abounding in hope, and rooted in the faith of the Church.
