As the early church continued to grow, the apostles realized they needed help caring for the people. Instead of trying to do everything themselves, they wisely chose other qualified people to serve those in need. Ananias and Sapphira saw how Barnabas was praised for his generosity, and they wanted the recognition, too. They tried to lie to Peter and the church, but the Spirit cannot be deceived. By faking their generosity, they revealed that they did not have a proper fear of the Lord. Their deception cost them their lives. What about you? Do you live in awe of the God of the universe who loves you, or do you seek the temporary praise of man?

The early church in Jerusalem was led by the Holy Spirit and shared what they had with each other. Luke, the author of Acts, singled out one generous individual named Joseph, aka Barnabas, who sold a field and brought it to the church to help those in need. This is not the only place Barnabas shows up in Acts. He also plays a key role in the life of a certain apostle named Saul, aka Paul.

In Acts 4, Peter and John were taken to the Sanhedrin after they preached about Jesus to the crowds. The religious leaders were angry and demanded that they stop telling others about Jesus. However, the two disciples responded courageously that they would always choose to listen to God, not man. Because of their courage, we can continue to share the good news with others today!

There was nothing special about Jesus’ disciples, but He still chose them to play a critical role in the most amazing story in history. After Jesus returned to heaven, two of the disciples, Peter and John, healed a paralytic and shared the good news of Jesus with the crowd. Even though the Pharisees were upset at the disciples, they couldn’t deny what they had seen. They recognized Peter and John had been with Jesus. Would people recognize that in you?

Today, we wrap up our week by looking at the birth of the church in Acts 2. These early believers lived dependently on the Lord. They knew that all they had was Him and their lives were centered around their Savior. What might someone else say is the center of your life? Is it on something temporary that will one day pass away, or is it the Creator of the universe who gave Himself up for you because of His infinite love?

The last few verses of Acts 2 give us a glimpse of the early church. These new believers devoted themselves to fellowship with each other. They lived vulnerable lives in rich relationships with one another. Living like Christ in the power of the Spirit enables us to live sacrificially, humbly, and generously. May we live counterculturally like the early church so others are drawn to the God who saves.

After Peter’s very first sermon in Acts 2, over 3,000 people believed! At the very beginning of the church, all the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and caring for each other. As Jesus prepared to leave His disciples, He promised they would not be alone. He would send them a gift. In Acts 2, we can read the amazing story of when the gift of the Holy Spirit came to live inside all the believers. Empowered by the Spirit, those men and women shared the Good News of Jesus to everyone around them, and the church was born.

The fear of God destroys the fear of anything else. Psalm 39 and Isaiah 66 remind us that God will be with, bless, and protect those who fear Him. This week, we have been looking at Deuteronomy 14:4 and what it means to fear the Lord. One of the competing fears many of us wrestle with is fear of man. Only one can win. Have you ever considered why the Bible asks us to fear the Lord? Scripture helps us understand who God really is. He is a God who saves and defeats His enemies. He is compassionate and yet also a consuming fire. He is a holy, perfect, and just God. He is the one we sin against, and because of His greatness, our well-deserved punishment is severe. You may not be able to write a clear definition of authenticity, but you know it when you see it.
Daniel’s character and active faith impacted not just those around him but multiple generations of royals and the lost nation of Babylon. “...For he is the living God, and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.’ So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian” (Daniel 6:26-28 NIV). What would someone say about your character? Are you the real deal?

Daniel was cast into the lion’s den because he committed to worshipping God despite an unjust decree. His integrity and steadfast prayer routine were crucial in keeping him safe. Despite the challenges, Daniel aimed to maintain a humble connection with God daily. Do people around you know who you serve continually?

“Daniel determined that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine he drank. So he asked permission from the chief official not to defile himself.” (Daniel 1:8 HCSB).
Humbly and boldly live for God, just like Daniel. Daniel shifted the narrative and took control of his life while in Babylonian captivity. Resolved in his heart, he was going to walk in The Truth. In the Book of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar takes young Israelite men captive to serve in Babylon. Despite being captives, they remain devoted to God and demonstrate integrity, respect, and kindness. In chapter 3, King Nebuchadnezzar builds a 90-foot gold statue for worship, leading Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to refuse to bow down out of loyalty to God despite the risk involved. The nation of Israel endured seven years of oppression and cried out to God for deliverance. In response, God raised up Gideon to lead them. Faith is not the absence of fear, it’s the presence of trust in the midst of fear. Faith in God doesn’t eliminate fear, it overrides fear; this can be seen when God is speaking to Joshua as he is trying to lead the Israelite people.

The Centurion Soldier mentioned in Luke 7 wasn't a flawless religious figure, yet he profoundly understood true authority and leadership. He recognized the extraordinary power within Jesus because both leaders grasped the importance of valuing individuals regardless of their position in society.

Jesus was not just an accessible rabbi, but also the most approachable man to ever walk the earth. Even those considered untouchable during that era, like lepers, could have a close and personal interaction with Jesus. Individuals afflicted with leprosy in those days faced severe consequences - loss of employment, reputation, relationships, health, and, worst of all, a loss of hope. Despite these challenges, Jesus extended His hand, as seen in Luke 5:13: “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ And immediately the leprosy left him.”

You will never be seen as an untouchable in the eyes of the Heavenly Father. “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ And immediately the leprosy left him.” ( Luke 5:13). Most people assume that prayer should be primarily a way to “get God to give me what I want”, but Jesus teaches that prayer is primarily us, aligning our will with God’s. Today, take your time and meditate on what you’re praying. Fix your mind first and your Heavenly Father’s name, his kingdom, and what His will is. Then, pour out your heart as you ask for forgiveness and protection and as you share your needs with him.

Paul is saying your heart can be satisfied whether you have much or little, whether you have achieved your goals or not, and whether things seem to be going well or not. Philippians 4:13 speaks primarily of how, with Christ, your heart can find contentment, satisfaction, and confidence regardless of your circumstances. Contentment doesn’t come when you have everything you want; it comes when you realize that in Christ, you have everything you need.
Philippians 4:11-13 (NTV), Paul says this: “Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. You need to give yourself more than just the thin yellow line that culture provides. The thin yellow line on the road allows you to serve off and cause some damage easily. But strategic guardrails set by Godly wisdom keep you from danger and prevent having to do damage control. Proverbs 4:25-27 provides us with guardrails we can put in place today.

King Solomon, known for his wisdom and wealth, admits his downfall started when he foolishly rejected God's wisdom and ignored God's guardrails. Today, we move into chapter 4 of James. The Bible is full of relational conflicts, and we all face conflicts in our lives, too. James asks us what causes our quarrels and then points out that our conflicts rise up from the sin within us. When James was writing, he lived in a society with a stark class system, where it was evident who were the "haves" and who were the "have-nots." Even today, we may find ourselves categorizing people as "those people." However, this is not the way Jesus intends for us to live. As His followers, He calls us to love everyone and to avoid showing favoritism.

The book of James encourages us to humbly accept the Word of God daily, but not passively. God does not want us to treat His Word as a menu or a search engine where we can pick and choose what we like. His Word is a mirror that reflects our reality back to us. James, the half-brother of Jesus and leader in the early church, wrote a letter to persecuted believers, encouraging them to persevere. Are you teachable? Do you have good, receptive soil where God’s Word can take root and grow? People with good soil are humble, open, and thankful. It’s God’s job to transform us. Our job is to remain in Him. Our faith grows a little stronger each time we say “yes” to the Holy Spirit. Envy is resenting God’s goodness in other people’s lives while ignoring His goodness in yours. Envy is found in multiple lists of sins throughout the New Testament, including right next to murder and drunkenness. It rots our bones and robs our joy. Comparison never leads anywhere good, but gratitude for God’s goodness leads to life.

What do you do when you feel anger rising inside you? Proverbs 15:1 and Proverbs 21:23 warn us to watch our words when we are angry. Instead of spouting off whatever hurtful words come to mind, the Holy Spirit can help us respond with a gentle answer when we come to Him and admit our weakness.

James 1:19-20 warns us to be slow to anger. Our anger is often a reaction to a different emotion going on inside us. When you start to feel anger, pray and ask God to show you what is happening in your heart. Reflect and remember the results that may come from your choices. Ask the Holy Spirit for the self-control to wisely respond to whatever is going on around and inside you.

This week, we have been looking at the Fatal Four, four deadly opponents that want to take us out. God has righteous anger that comes from sin, injustice and evil. You might experience that, too. However, mismanaged anger causes damage wherever it flares up. Be aware that the enemy wants to keep fanning that flame, so we burn our relationships down.

Pride wants to run rampant in our lives, but God offers us a strategy to defeat it. Philippians 2 shows us the one who lived a perfectly humble life: Jesus. For the last few days, we’ve been hanging out with Jesus and listening in as He gives His final words to His disciples. In John 17, Jesus prays to His Father, giving thanks for the disciples and those who would come after them. On the night He was arrested, Jesus prayed for you! He prayed for us to be unified so we could be a beacon of hope to the world, pointing to Him.

Sometimes, our lives can change course with just a few words. To illustrate this, Jesus explained to His disciples that He was the true vine. For them to live the full life He wanted for them, they needed to remain in Him. The job of the branch is just to stay connected and bear fruit, but it cannot do that apart from the vine. Imagine how God could work in and through you when you remain in Him.

Have you ever failed so badly that recovery seemed impossible? The apostle Peter experienced that, too. Instead of hiding in shame, Peter ran to Jesus. Jesus still bore the marks of suffering and death, but His resurrection brought grace and forgiveness to Peter. No matter what you have done, there is hope. Jesus is waiting for you to run to Him.

Just as Jesus prophesied, Peter denied knowing Jesus three times when less than 24 hours prior, he promised to be faithful. Matthew’s account of this story tells us that Peter was grieved and owned his failure. He stayed with the group instead of letting failure isolate him. The disciples were distraught when Jesus revealed He was going where they could not follow. Peter pridefully promised that he would remain by Jesus' side no matter what. Jesus knew the weakness in Peter’s heart and prophesied Peter’s denial. Yet nothing would take Jesus’ love away from Peter, and nothing can take it away from you.

At the Last Supper, Jesus left His disciples with a few final words as He prepared to go to the cross. He called them to love each other as He had loved them. Following His resurrection, they lived out this command, loving others in such a way that love became the defining feature of the early church.

As He sat with the disciples, Jesus knew that it was Judas who would betray Him. Despite Judas' efforts to retreat into the darkness to hide, he was still seen by God. The applause and praise from others drive too many of us daily. However, that was not true with Jesus. Although He was tempted in every way we are, He did not give in to sin. The people praising Him as He entered the city on the first Palm Sunday could not grasp what He had come to do. They praised him like a conquering king, but His victory could only come through His humble sacrifice and death.

As people headed to Jerusalem for the Passover, many would stop to see Jesus and Lazarus in Bethany. They had heard of the amazing miracle and wanted to see it themselves. Because of this, the Pharisees were plotting to murder both men, all in the name of God. Their actions would set in motion the epic events of Passion Week.

In John 12, we see Jesus back in Bethany at the house of Lazarus, Martha and Mary. During dinner, Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume as an act of worship and gratitude. In contrast, Judas had a heart hardened by greed, and he criticized her actions. Will you approach Jesus with a heart of greed or gratitude today?

When we are so self-focused, we miss out on the good things in life. Some of the people who had seen Lazarus' resurrection reported it to the Pharisees. The Pharisees were trying to preserve their selfish interests and missed seeing Jesus for who He is and what He was there to do. Are you missing out on Jesus and the life He has for you?

Even in the face of death, Martha and Mary believed that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Seeing the grief, sadness and pain experienced by His dear friends in this world caused both anger and tears to well up in Jesus. He approached the tomb, had the stone rolled away from the entrance and proved He is who He says He is by raising Lazarus back to life!

John 11 tells us an amazing story about Jesus and His dear friends Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Although He loved them, Jesus stayed where He was when He heard the news that Lazarus was sick until the time was right. When He finally arrived, Martha came to Him in grief because Lazarus had died. With compassion, Jesus reminded her that He is the resurrection and the life and asked her, “Do you believe this?” We need to ask ourselves the same question today.

As we read through the Gospel of John, we can see that Jesus made it very clear who He was and that He came from the Father. However, the Pharisees did not believe Him. Despite everything He said and did, they continued to stand against Him and even tried to stone Him. But His time had not yet come.

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is so committed to caring for us, His sheep, that He was willing to lay down His life for us. Have you ever stopped to consider that as He told this story to the Pharisees, He knew that the suffering He would endure on the cross was coming? Not only that,
but He also knew the resurrection was coming and that redemption would then be available to all. That is some really good news from the Good Shepherd.

In John 10, God was standing right in front of the Pharisees, but they did not recognize Him or His voice. Jesus told them a parable about how a good shepherd will care for his sheep, and the sheep will listen to and obey their shepherd’s voice. Jesus has come to give us life to the fullest if we will listen to His voice, the voice of our Good Shepherd.

As the Pharisees continued interrogating the man Jesus had healed from blindness, his faith in what Jesus had done for him grew deeper. Eventually, the Pharisees, the ones who were supposed to bring the people to God, threw the man out of the synagogue. They were blind to the truth of who Jesus is. This Monday, we jump back into John 9 to see Jesus heal a man who had been born blind. It was an amazing miracle, but not everyone was excited. The Pharisees were upset and questioned the healed man. In Joshua 5, we see the people of Israel finally make it to the Promised Land after 40 days of wandering in the wilderness. The old generation who had been circumcised died, so before they could go any further, God commanded Joshua to circumcise the new generation. In a different way, God may be asking you to cut away something in your life so that you can move into what He has next for you.

Guilt is a strange emotion to deal with. It can be a good thing when we realize we have sinned against a holy God and it draws us to Him. However, our enemy, Satan, can twist it and use it against us until it turns into shame. Guilt points out what we’ve done, while shame attacks who
we are. But shame has an enemy: grace. Grace from our good God sets us free and reminds us who we really are.

When the Pharisees brought a woman caught in sin to Jesus, He refused to play their game. Jesus challenged them by saying that the one without sin can cast the first stone. The crowd faded away until Jesus was alone with the woman. He, the only one without sin, forgave her and called her to leave her life of sin. We, too, can be forgiven and set free from our past because of His great love for us.

Start your week with us in John 8, where the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus in an attempt to trap Him. Despite the Pharisees' selfish motivation to use the woman for their own purposes, Jesus saw this woman with love and stooped down to her. Jesus does the same with you and me. In John chapter 7, we are introduced to Jesus’ brothers. What do you think it was like to have the perfect Son of God as a brother? At that point, none of them believed He was the Messiah. Despite their coaxing, Jesus did not let their expectations determine what He did or when He did it.

Jesus asked His disciples a question that we often come face-to-face with in our own lives: “Do you want to leave, too?” Just as the disciples may have been tempted to abandon Jesus in the hard times, things will happen in our lives that are painful and difficult. It is in those moments
we have to remember, as Peter did, there is no one like Jesus. No one else offers us eternal life and unconditional love.

The crowds misunderstood the miracle meal in John 6 and demanded that Jesus keep showing them signs. However, Jesus knew what they really needed and saw their spiritual emptiness. With compassion, He called them to follow Him, but the crowds did not understand the amazing life He was calling them to and turned from the one who could truly satisfy them.

In John chapter 6, John tells us another amazing miracle of Jesus that shows us more of who He is. With just a few loaves and fish, Jesus fed a multitude. The Pharisees thought Jesus was a problem because He challenged their system by caring more for people than their man-made rules. Jesus told them that anyone who listens to Him will live, including them. They had all the knowledge but missed the truth of who Jesus is. How might you value knowledge more than truth?

Instead of celebrating Jesus' miracles, the Pharisees focused on anyone who might be breaking their rules. The Sabbath was supposed to be a gift to humanity, but the Pharisees turned it into a burden. Trying to follow the rules won’t save us, but following the one, true Savior will. In the middle of a sleepless night, King Xerxes was reminded of when Mordecai saved his life. The king asked Haman what he should do to honor someone. Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, discovered a plot against the king and ultimately saved the king’s life. Haman, one of the king’s officials, hated Mordecai because he would never bow when Haman walked by. He didn’t want to just punish Mordecai but the entire Jewish population. He convinced the king to issue a decree declaring all Jews would be killed on a specific date. Who could rescue them? Was Esther made queen for such a time as this?

After Jonah was spat out of the fish, God gave him the exact same instructions: go to Nineveh. Jonah didn’t want to go to “those people” because Nineveh was the capital city of Israel’s violent enemies. But God loves even “those people” and will forgive anyone when they repent and turn to Him.
