Defending Detroit's Air + Detroit's New Startup Fund (ft. Darren Riley, Justin Onwenu) Aug 07, 2025

Show notes

Today's show cover a couple of topics in one conversation, both important for the future of the city.

Darren Riley, founder and CEO of JustAir, and Justin Onwenu, the director of entrepreneurship for the city of Detroit.

Darren discussed the inspiration behind JustAir, and idea that came from his own health challenges.

The conversation touched on how the company is trying to inform environmental and health policy, particularly zoning decisions.

JustAir is different from your phone's weather app because it can provide data from the block level and is working toward making that information accessible like a nutrition label, so folks can make informed choices about going outside.

Justin then discussed the city's investment and focus on providing access grants through the new Detroit Startup Fund. He highlighted that capital, customers, and community are all important and what the city is doing to encourage new companies.

Sheffield Runs The Table On Detroit Primary Night Aug 06, 2025

Show notes

After four hours of live streaming, we recorded a reaction episode to Mary Sheffield's commanding primary election performance, garnering the top stop.

Second place was Solomon Kinloch. We also get into some city council races and overall vibe shifts in the city.

Plus, if we were to make a cocktail for Mary Sheffield, what would it look like? Engineer of alcohol and audio Randy Walker has a suggetion.

(We don't have a runner-up version as the results weren't 100% set when we recorded this, we'll circle back on that)

From Oakland County to Washington (ft. Rep. Haley Stevens) Aug 04, 2025

Show notes

Today's show features a conversation with U.S. Representative and Democratic primary candidate for U.S. Senat Haley Stevens. Representing the 11th District since 2019, her district includes Ferndale, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Farmington Hills, Pontiac, Wixom, White Lake, Troy, Auburn Hills, and more.

Oakland County is one of the most powerful and economically important areas of the state and country. Plus, many of you, our listeners, live there.

We touched on a ton of topics from the auto industry to international issues to the size of coney menus. My goal was to get a sense of what her thoughts were, over my own.

After all, she's in the seat - and running for a higher one in a contested primary.

Cash For People Over Corporations; Sweetgreen Coming; Apple Invests In Detroit Jul 31, 2025

Show notes

Jer's back from Chicago and has big thoughts on some false arguments we're making back home in Detroit on transit... to making sure we're investing in projects for the people to the importance of even some density (duplex and triplexes, not giant apartment buildings).

After all, if the government is going to give cash... shouldn't we be investing in infrastructure that benefits us all than direct to a multi-national's pocket book?

Plus, Sweetgreen is coming to Detroit and Apple is investing in a new academy.

Don't forget our big birthday bash is Saturday, August 9! Be sure to sign up https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1530285227309?aff=oddtdtcreator
