Episode 4: Season 2- The 2022 Seminar Series- Episode 4- Mike Guadango- Sport Mastery and Physical Health Don’t Go Hand in Hand.” Mar 22, 2022
    Show notes

“What am I going to do for this kid? Because he doesn’t even know what makes him good. Genuinely, we can say we do, we have no idea what makes these people good.”

In today’s episode of The Podcast I sit down and chat with Freak Strength’s Mike Guadango. During the 32-minute chat we talk about:

    1) The crazy world of being a “sport specialist” and the ebbs and flows of it that he’s lived through.

    2) The role asymmetries in sport, and why coaches may not want to “correct” some.

    3) A unique method to build “work capacity” in rehab that has helped his athletes improve at a greater rate.

    4) The role of psychology in high level sport and the mental gaps between the good and the elite.

    5) The misconceived connection between aesthetics and performance.

    6) Understanding that the outliers do things differently because they’re outliers, and maybe “correcting” those “mistakes” is not what’s best for their performance.

Episode 3: Season 2- The 2022 Seminar Series- Episode 3- Henk Kraaijehnof- Plans can only be perfect in retrospect Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

“You always figure things out when it’s too late. This is the problem of human nature. You figure out you’re on the wrong track when your athletes are not performing well, but that mistake has been made three months before when you didn’t see it, when you though “hey this is going great, I’m such a good coach.” Then they fail miserably, and then that mistake has been made before so always try to plan ahead.”

Always great to get to catch up with my good friend Henk Kraaijehnof in this episode of The Podcast. Throughout the 38-minute chat we talk about:

    1) Henk’s new roles in the world of coaching, and how some things have come full circle.

    2) How a new location has allowed Henk to “do Henk things” with exploring and researching.

    3) How hindsight is always 20/20, so identifying “mistakes” in training may be more difficult then we tend to believe.

    4) Trends that could be holding coaches back, and how we can all filter who we are learning from and what we are looking at

    5) The importance of being your biggest critic

    6) Humility, and understanding that what may be great today may not lead to success tomorrow.

Episode 2: Season 2- The 2022 Seminar Series- Episode 2- Molly Binetti- Our Issues and Barriers Come from Things We Didn’t Learn How to Navigate Mar 08, 2022
    Show notes

“As cool as our job is and as much as we all love training, and making them better and watching them do their thing. At the end of it, what are we actually leaving them with and what are we helping them do?”

We are joined this week by South Carolina Women’s Basketball Sport Performance Coach and my Free-VASPS co-host, Molly Benetti for this episode of The Podcast. Throughout the 40-minute discussion we dive into:

    • How COVID has continued to impact the preseason preparation strategies
    • The pros and cons of having a veteran led team
    • The role and importance of feedback from the athlete’s and staff
    • The importance of educating ourselves outside of the world of S and C, and the irony of talking about that during an S and C Podcast.

Episode 1: Season 2- The 2022 Seminar Series- Episode 1- Jeff Moyer- It’s the difficult cases that make me want to dig deeper Mar 01, 2022
    Show notes

“None of this strength and conditioning shit matters if we can’t get our athletes to understand what we’re asking them to do, or if they don’t understand how it applies. If they don’t get it, it doesn’t matter.”

Welcome back to The Podcast. If I was going to bring this thing back it had to be Jeff Moyer batting leadoff. In this 40-minute talk, Jeff and I talk about:

    1) The new and unique rabbit holes that the pandemic has allowed Jeff to dive down

    2) What were the driving factors behind him digging deep into neurology, and what this research has impacted in his evaluations and programming?

    3) How his personal experiences growing up have been a guiding light in pushing him to find better answers.

    4) How “comfort zones” don’t’ just limit athlete’s, but coaches as well.

    5) The importance of a mentor, and why young coaches need to reach out to people as early as possible to learn from them

    6) The importance of his presentation being applicable the Monday after The Pittsburgh Seminar and what to expect from his presentation.
