Louis Le Prince was the first person to create moving pictures—but just weeks before unveiling his invention to the world, he mysteriously disappeared.
Three and a half years later, Thomas Edison, Le Prince’s rival, made the device public, claiming to have invented it himself. And the man who had dedicated his life to preserving memories was himself lost to history—until now!

I'm admittedly not a massive baseball fan but I do enjoy a good origin story and some outrageous fiction. This episode has both!
I'm joined by Tom Gilbert, author of the book, How Baseball Happened: Outrageous Lies Exposed! The True Story Revealed.
The wrongness of baseball history can be staggering. You may have heard that Abner Doubleday or Alexander Cartwright invented baseball. Neither did. You may have been told that a club called the Knickerbockers played the first baseball game in 1846. They didn’t. You have read that baseball’s color line was uncrossed and unchallenged until Jackie Robinson in 1947. Nope. You have been told that the clean, corporate 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings were baseball’s first professional club. Not true. They weren’t the first professionals; they weren’t all that clean, either. You may have heard Cooperstown, Hoboken, or New York City called the birthplace of baseball, but not Brooklyn. Yet Brooklyn was the home of baseball’s first fans, the first ballpark, the first statistics—and modern pitching.

Imagine taking an entire farm and putting it underwater in the ocean.
Now imagine that the crops you grow don't need to be watered and don’t need pesticides, fertilizer, feed, or soil to grow.
Then imagine that this farm soaks up loads of carbon and nitrogen to help mitigate global warming.
And then imagine that the food it creates is a nutrient-dense superfood that’s low in fat and calories.
That’s the power of regenerative ocean farming!
In this episode I’m joined by author and ocean farmer, Bren Smith. Bren pioneered the development of regenerative ocean farming and was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “25 People Shaping the Future” as well as being featured in TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2017”. He's also the co-founder of GreenWave, a non-profit that trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers.
Tune in to learn…
-How a seaweed supplement fed to cows reduces their methane emitting burps,
-About the McDonald’s Seaweed Burger from the 90’s,
-That kelp is full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, amino acids, omega-3 fats, and fibre,
-How to start your own ocean farm (& make a good living too),
-How to cook with seaweed,
-Where to by seaweed,

You’ve probably been told that democracy is the ultimate, indisputable, best type of governance. But modern democracy is less than 250 years old―It’s largely an experiment with no previous track record!
Myself, and most others, would say that democracy is arguably the best form of governance. But perhaps there are ways to tweak and improve it so that the people ultimately have the power!
That’s what get’s me excited about this episode with David Stasavage. David is the author of the book, The Decline and Rise of Democracy: A Global History from Antiquity to Today.
Delving into the prevalence of early democracy throughout the world, David Stasavage makes the case that understanding how and where these democracies flourished―and when and why they declined―can provide crucial information not just about the history of governance, but also about the ways modern democracies work and where they could manifest in the future.
Tune in to learn…
-Where democracy originated from (It’s not what you were taught in school),
-What democracy actually means,
-Why democracies tend to thrive & crumble,
-About the democratic experiment occurring in the United States,
-Why America may not have actually been a democracy until 1965,

Isn’t it frustrating when you're unsure if you can trust what you read on Facebook, watch on YouTube, or hear on a podcast? Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound and it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s true.
We need a set of powerful tools and the skill to cut through the most intimidating data!
That’s why I’m joined by Professor Jevin West in this episode. Jevin and his coauthor Carl Bergstrom are the authors of the book, Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World.
You don’t need a lot of technical expertise to call out problems with data. Are the numbers or results too good or too dramatic to be true? Is the claim comparing like with like? Is it confirming your personal bias? Tune in to understand selection bias and muddled data visualization, distinguish between correlation and causation, and examine the susceptibility of science to modern bullshit.

Even if you’re not into wine, you’re gonna love this story about the most notorious con in wine history!
Rudy Kurniawan, a young, virtually unknown twenty something from Indonesia, rose to become the leading purveyor of fine wines in a span of only six years. During that time, he sold tens of millions of dollars worth of wine to the American elite.
In time, however, discrepancies begin to appear and crates of Kurniawan’s fine wines are abruptly pulled from auction. It turns out that crates of Kurniawan’s fine wines up for auction are not even supposed to exist!
In this episode, I interview Peter Hellman who was present for these counterfeit discoveries and worked to investigate the case. Tune in to learn why wine is so ideal for counterfeiting, about Rudy Kurniawan’s methods for counterfeiting wines, why Rudy was so successful, and the outcome of his trial and sentencing.

If you’re not from California, you may not know about the statewide treasure who is Huell Howser! For 22 years, Huell Howser shared California's history, cultural diversity, natural wonders, and amazing denizens through his travel tv shows, "California's Gold" and “Visiting.”
Born in Tennessee with a prominent southern accent, Huell was an unlikely spokesperson for California. But his unwavering enthusiasm and genuine curiosity gave us episodes featuring dryer lint artwork, age-old soda, an oversized 3-foot goldfish, among countless others.
In this episode, I got to visit the California’s Gold Exhibit and the Huell Howser Archives in Orange, CA. I spoke to John Carlo Encarnacion, the archives technician, and learned all about Huell Howser, his life, his work ethic, and his legacy. This was a special treat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Las Vegas has gone through some phases. It started out as the Wild West, with saloon doors and wagon wheels. Then it decked itself out in midcentury modern sleekness, and moved on to twenty-story high neon signs. Then came Disney-like theme parks featuring castles and pirates, followed by replicas of Venetian canals, New York skyscrapers, and the Eiffel Tower. More recently, the Strip decided to get classy, with casinos designed by famous architects and zillion-dollar collections of art.
Join Stefan Al and myself in this episode as he shares the wonderful history of Las Vegas architecture! We talk about the different Vegas eras, how feverish competition fueled this story, and how the strip not only reflected trends but also magnified them and sometimes even initiated them.

Until now, human intelligence has had no rival. Can we coexist with beings whose intelligence dwarfs our own? And will they allow us to?
In as little as a decade, AI could match and then surpass human intelligence. Corporations and government agencies are pouring billions into achieving AI's Holy Grail―human-level intelligence. Once AI has attained it, scientists argue, it will have survival drives much like our own. We may be forced to compete with a rival more cunning, more powerful, and more alien than we can imagine.

Electric guitars have been around since the 1930’s but had some serious drawbacks including their inability to get very loud. Both Leo Fender and Les Paul strived to achieve louder sounds which paved the way for new music styles including rock ’n’ roll.
Leo Fender was a quiet, half-blind, self-taught radio repairman motivated by his curiosity and requests from local musicians. Les Paul was a brilliant but headstrong pop star and guitarist who spent years toying with new musical technologies for himself. Their contest empowered the most inventive musicians of the 1950s and 1960s—including Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Eric Clapton— with a vibrancy and volume never before attainable.

These lawyers were architects of the monopolistic new corporations so despised by many, and acted as guardians who helped the kings of industry fend off government overreaching. Have you ever noticed how sea creatures like mussels, oysters and barnacles, refuse to budge even on wet, stormy coastlines? Apparently it’s because they make their own glue and cement which is incredibly effective! Jonathan Wilker and his team at the Wilker Lab are studying how nature makes these materials and is translating that information into glues and adhesives we can use for ourselves. And the impact of new adhesives might be more meaningful than you think... Adhesives are found everywhere! They’re in makeup, plywood and furniture, all over the interior of your car, and they even have potential for biomedical uses! Jonathan is working not only find adhesives that work better, but to create non-toxic alternatives and even adhesives that work underwater! This episode surprised me with how interesting Jonathan’s research is and how exciting the potential impact is for all of us. Give it a listen and I’m sure you’ll feel the same! Sisu sorta means courage, determination, and integrity but it’s basically impossible to translate perfectly into English. Plus, I’m like 90-something percent Finnish so I really found myself relating to a lot of the traits Finnish people seem to have! I’ve always been interested in hunting but was hesitant to try it because of two reasons. First off, I was never sure if it was ethical and didn’t know if I could actually kill a living thing. Secondly, I never even knew how to get started and where to try it out myself. So I got a hunter, Jayson Sacco, on the show to talk about these things and share his perspective. It’s something we rarely think about but why do we dress girls in pink and boys in blue? Is it ok for boys to play with unicorns or for girls to like dinosaurs?
To uncover the answers, dress historian Jo Paoletti looked at advertising, catalogs, dolls, baby books, mommy blogs and discussion forums, and other popular media to examine the surprising shifts in attitudes toward color as a mark of gender in American children's clothing. She chronicles the decline of the white dress for both boys and girls, the introduction of rompers in the early 20th century, the gendering of pink and blue, the resurgence of unisex fashions, and the origins of today's highly gender-specific baby and toddler clothing.

Cherie met Chris online after he was already full-time on the road and decided to sell her house to join him. They’ve been together on the road since 2006 evolving from a 16-foot trailer to a 17-foot trailer to currently a 35-foot vintage bus conversion and a 47-foot motor yacht!
Both Chris and Cherie have backgrounds in tech so they were able to continue working on the road as long as they had an internet connection. As they shared their adventures and travels, they kept getting the same question over and over: How do they stay connected to the mobile internet?
That question eventually led to a book called, The Mobile Internet Handbook. But it turns out mobile internet technology and options change very quickly. So the book quickly led to a website that’s constantly being updated with guides and reviews for different internet plans, hardware, and options. They offer a ton of free information while also being member supported so they can remain unbiased with their recommendations.
In this episode, Chris and Cherie give us a general overview of how to approach your mobile internet needs and the options out there. We discuss why it’s important to assess your particular needs, the pros and cons to Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite internet plus alternatives you’ve probably never thought of. They explain how a booster works and if you even need one along with how to maximize your hardware purchases so you don’t have to constantly upgrade.
This is an extremely helpful and practical episode with a fun couple of people that you don’t want to miss!

Life on the road for Ashley and Lamar began with an 11 week road trip to visit all 48 contiguous states in their Honda Civic. At the end of the trip, it became clear that they both wanted to make traveling a full-time deal. Eventually, they found themselves purchasing a Ford Transit van and being featured on the HGTV show Tiny House, Big Living. The show actually encouraged them to speed up their build timeline and led to an awesome pullout deck in the back of their van along with a loft bed and some of the coolest lighting I’ve ever seen in a van!
Now they travel full-time with their 4-year-old daughter and pup Beirut while working as tour managers for various brands. What’s a tour manager? You’ll just have to listen to the episode to get the complete explanation from Ashley and Lamar…

Michael Fuehrer lives full-time in a 35 foot converted school bus. Although he lives by himself, Michael is rarely alone due to the fact that his bus sleeps six people and has the capacity to seat 8 people for dinner! Social interaction and community was Michael’s main intention when he renovated his bus allowing him to bring along his friends and the new acquaintances he meets on the road.
After college, Michael discovered that he actually preferred living in a smaller space. He enjoyed the challenge of designing every area to be practical and useful. This eventually led him to Craigslist where he bought the first bus he found, a 2004 Thomas Freightliner for $3600. After 9 months of renovating, his bus was complete with a full shower and toilet, 2 beds, an office, and much much more. Today Michael spends his time traveling around to festivals and events helping folks with their bus renovations.
Michael is such a friendly and helpful guy. In this episode we talk about how to choose the right bus for you, things to look out for when shopping for a bus, what a composting toilet is, what sucks about living on the road, and a lot about Walmart parking lots.

On their first date, Matt laid it all out and explained to Megan that he wanted to travel the country in his van. Nine months later, they were on the road together!
Megan and Matt started their journey with the goal of visiting all 50 states in 6 months. Along the way, they realized their trip had become a checklist. Instead of crossing things off a list and rushing ahead, they decided to slow down and enjoy the journey.
This episode was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed talking to The Dirty Darlings. In this episode we talk about how they were able to transition to remote work, why Matt bought a van that was already converted, why Kansas sucks, how much VanLife costs (as told by an accountant), and how to get a truly unlimited LTE wifi hotspot.

Wesley and Savana own Tiny Watts Solar, a company devoted to helping design and install solar systems for all things tiny.
They might be the most qualified people in the world to do this: Savana grew up living tiny on a sailboat, Wes has a Renewable Energy Engineering degree, they live full-time in their decked out Sprinter van and to top it off, Wesley’s last name is Watts!

They have a 1000 watt solar roof deck to power their induction cooktop and toaster oven. Plus a diesel-powered heater, radiant heated floors, and on-demand hot water! This van build is incredible!
This is a very practical and actionable episode full of specific advice. We really dig into the numbers on solar, batteries, and more. They explain how they were able to use their rent money to buy a van and then make $12,000 on it later.
