The Cubs had a tough weekend in Miami, but Kap and Gordon still took away some positives. The Cubs were in every game, Justin Steele looked good again, and Patrick Wisdom keeps hitting home runs.
The guys also go over their biggest takeaways from the Cubs first month of play. Both of them agree that the offense has been better than expected, but the bullpen hasn't been as good as expected. Kap wonders if Jed will actually look to add to the bullpen if the team keeps playing well. Aroldis Chapman will most likely be available again at this trade deadline. Will Jed want to give away the assets to aquire him?
Kap still wants to know when the Cubs will bring up Matt Mervis. Kap says, if he's ready, he should be here. Gordon thinks the Cubs have to at least be thinking about Mervis up. But he also knows the Cubs will take their time making that decision.
The guys also discuss the impact Yan Gomes has had on the team and whether the Cubs will struggle without him. On the other hand, Miguel Amaya finally gets the call to the bigs. How long will he be here?
The guys also discuss who the best pitcher in Chicago is right now. Is it Justin Steele? Is it Dylan Cease?

Gordon suggests the Cubs look 8 miles south and target White Sox closer Liam Hendriks once he returns. That would send shockwaves through Chicago and wake up the rest of baseball.
Plus, the guys debate if the offense, which has scored double digit runs already as many times as they did all of last year, is sustainable for the remainder of 2023.

#DavidKaplan & #GordonWittenmyer are buying in, well, let’s be honest, Kap had long ago, but after a series win over the #Dodgers, even Gordon is tipping his cap to what the #Cubs have done to start the 2023 season. Gordon has the stats to back it up.
Most notably, the pair highlight the performance of #MarcusStroman & #JustinSteele in the rotation. They’ve been lights out, and with Steele, it goes way back to last year. The offense is for real, and #DansbySwanson appears to be the real deal after signing a mega deal in the offseason.
Prior to #HaydenWesneski’s dominant start against Oakland, the guys talked about him needing a start like that or he could be the odd man out when Kyle Hendricks returns.
Plus - the guys discuss #SeiyaSuzuki’s return to RF.
There’s reason for excitement about what’s going on on the Northside.

David Kaplan and Gordon Wittenmyer discuss several topics beginning with the Cubs good start to the 2023 season, with strong showings against good teams like the Brewers, Rangers and Mariners. Kap says the team might be a surprise all season, while Gordon admits even he didn’t see this coming. Gordon adds that Dansby Swanson, the big free agent addition for the Cubs, had been better than advertised.
Marcus Stroman is another talking point, leaving Kap to question whether the Cubs would consider extending him sooner than later after a hot start and appearing as if he’s settled into the team’s top starter. Gordon throws water on the topic saying he believes that Stroman will exercise his opt out and the Cubs will move on without him.
Plus, how could the Cubs give Stroman the money if they’re going to be players for Shohei Ohtani? That’s right, Bob Nightengale reported it could be the case which has Kap out over his skis and Gordon even suggesting a bet after Kap has brought the topic up nearly every podcast to date.

The conversation pivots to how the Cubs got here, and by here, a team that had to tear it down again in order to build it back up to a contender. Gordon is adamant that in a market like Chicago and for what the Cubs spend, they should never be in that position. Instead, the pandemic brought on ‘biblical losses.’ Kap debates that the Cubs didn’t have a team good enough to win, hence here we are, the new look Cubs ready to start a new tradition. Will Kyle Hendricks be back earlier than anticipated after being ahead of schedule in Mesa? Although he will unlikely be ready for Opening Day, what can be expected of the former Game 7 starter if he can return to his old self?
The guys discuss the Cubs lack of ability to lock up their core after 2016, specifically Kris Bryant, who hit a long, towering HR against the Cubs while the guys were recording. Some think KB is due for a monster year. So, in the end, will the Cubs regret not re-signing the 2016 NL MVP? They debate that topic.
And, Mike Clevinger of the White Sox will not face discipline after MLB concluded their review of domestic and child abuse claims. The guys make sense of it, and use a former Cubs case to see if there is anything similar from that case.
