Breaking News! - REKAP - The Chicago Cubs hire Craig Counsell! Nov 06, 2023

Kap is fired up because the Chicago Cubs have hired a new manager, Craig Counsell. The news shocked the baseball world has the Cubs relieved manager David Ross of his duties and shockingky hired Craig Counsell to one of the largest manager contracts ever. Most people in baseball assumed the Mets were going to get Craig, but Jed Hoyer operated stealthily and under the radar and swept in and hired him away from the Mets. Reportedly, Counsell wanted to stay in the Midwest, where he likes living and where his kids are in school. This hiring signals to the baseball world that the Cubs are back and ready to spend.

Kap and Gordon talk about the baseball playoffs. More specifically they focus on the Phillies who are playing great baseball and have 2 former Cubs and 1 guy who named his dog Wrigley. The guys talk about those three players and if the Cubs are going to spend big dollars this offseason like the Phillies have. They also talk about how the Rangers have spent big money, which has also lead to their success.
They guys discuss the state of the current Cubs team as well. What do they need to add to be a real contender? Both guys agree they need some new arms, but what else? The guys have an intense debate about who the Cubs will be willing to go after and how much they'll be willing to spend.
Finally, they talk about the contemporary baseball hall of fame committee who will meet in December. There are a number of managers, umpires, and executives who will be on the ballot. Who do the guys think should get in?

Kap and Gordon discuss whether or not they think the Cubs will go after Juan Soto. Soto has one year left on his rookie deal and is not yet 25 years old. He'll cost a lot, but with just one year of control left, he can't possibly cost too much. They also discuss whether or not getting Soto should stop them from going after Bellinger as well.
They also discuss whether letting Kyle Schwarber walk for nothing is one of the biggest mistakes the Cubs have ever made. Kyle is back in the post-season again, and the Cubs let him go basically because of money. They didn't want to pay the $8 million to keep him. Was that as bad as the Twins releasing David Ortiz back in 2002? What about the Orioles getting rid of Jake Arrieta?

Kap and Gordon debate if the Cubs season is over or not. Kap and Gordon both agree that the Cubs made a mistake in not trading for more pitching at the deadline. Gordon tells the story about a pitcher that he heard the Cubs thought they were getting. The Cubs may have had a better chance in September if they had added more bullpen help. Especially after they traded for Candelario, they should have done more.
Can the Cubs sweep the Brewers to give themselves a chance to get a Wild Card spot?
If the Cubs don't get to the playoffs, will they push their chips in a sign some studs to take the Cubs to the next level next year? Will they re-sign Bellinger? Kap and Gordon disagree that the Cubs will pay the necessary price for him. Will they pursue a third baseman?
