    54. Jesse Answers Your Burning Questions Oct 08, 2019
    Show notes

In 2014, Jesse closed down his law practice, we moved from Kansas to Tennessee, and he came home full-time.

That was over 5 years ago and it’s taken us a few years to find our rhythm. We’ve both learned and grown a lot in these last five years. It hasn’t been easy. He struggled through a period of depression. I struggled to figure out what it looked like to love him well through that.

But in the last two years, I’ve seen Jesse truly come alive, embrace who God has made him to be, and pour himself into the people and opportunities right in front of him. It has been beautiful and heartwarming to have a front row seat on his journey!

So many people have asked questions over the past five years like, “Is Jesse still an attorney? Why did he leave his law practice? What is his role in your business? What does his day-to-day look like?”

I think the fact that he would choose to come home full-time after getting his law degree and being licensed as an attorney really fascinated people... or makes people shake their heads in confusion.

Today, on the podcast, I ask him these burning questions you all have asked and he gets really honest about his journey and where he is now.

If you’re struggling with major life changes, want to find your worth outside of your work, or are just curious about some of the behind-the-scenes of our lives, I think this episode will encourage you.

Thank you, Jesse, for your willingness to be so open and vulnerable. I love you and love this crazy and adventurous and wild ride of life we’re on together!

    In This Episode:

[00:25] Welcome back! We're turning the tables a little today and I'm interviewing Jesse!

[01:38] What’s saving our lives: Nalgene bottles and seeing our baby on an ultrasound!

[06:44] I haven't gotten in much reading recently, but every day I take time to read The Daily Light.

[09:01] Jesse shares a brief recap of his story post-law school and starting his own law firm.

[13:45] Why did Jesse decide to close down the law firm?

[19:04] How Jesse struggled to recognize his gifts and battled depression in those early months.

[23:07] What does Jesse’s life look like now?

[29:10] We talk about Jesse's involvement in church, our home, and our business.

[31:16] I close out the show by sharing why I am so grateful that Jesse is home and how his willingness to take a risk has benefited our family in such profound ways.

    53. 4 Strategies to Survive Stretching Seasons Oct 01, 2019
    Show notes

Are you in a season of life that feels stretching, exhausting, or overwhelming? If so, today's episode just might really encourage you!

I share 4 strategies for surviving stretching seasons that I'm currently implementing right now in the middle of morning sickness and a really, really full work schedule (gratefully, I'm finished with 3 of the biggest work weeks of my year and things are slowing down now!)

By the way, I intentionally use the word stretching not stressful... and I explain why on the podcast. This change in wording really has helped me to have a different perspective! And I talk about this as the first strategy on the podcast today.

I get really practical in this episode, including talking about why I decided to take medication for my nausea and what is working for me.

    In This Episode:

[00:54] I start off by sharing a story of something I did last week that caused me to freak out and feel stressed. And then I share how I processed through this... and what I learned from it.

[07:35] What's saving our lives: GOWOD app and the Preggie Pop Drops. (I'm pretty sure you can guess who chose which!)

[13:35] Jesse doesn’t have a book to share for this episode, but I have been reading The Choosing by Rachelle Dekker.

[16:11] Why I’m using the word stretching versus stressful to describe this season of life.

[19:03] Strategy #1: Change your perspective.

[19:43] Strategy #2: Focus on the barebones basics (we define this in the episode).

    [21:42] Strategy #3: Prioritize rest!

[22:08] Strategy #4: Live one day at a time.

[23:09] I get really practical as I talk about doing your best and how your best is going to look different in different seasons.

    52. My Unplugged Sundays Experiment Sep 24, 2019
    Show notes

When Jesse and I first got married, we always took Sunday offline. It was a day for us to just enjoy going to church, resting, and being together as a family.

In recent years, I’ve fallen out of that practice (I'm not even exactly sure why, but I did). In addition to going to church and volunteering at church, Sunday became a day for me to also play catchup on a lot of blogging work and emails.

This meant that I was usually working at least some hours every single day of the week. Which I don't recommend because it meant I rarely had a stretch of offline time for more than a few hours at a time.

    My 4-Week Commitment

I could make a lot of excuses and seemingly valid reasons as to why I "needed" to work on Sunday, but I realized that working 7 days a week wasn't good for my soul or body or family, so I decided to try something different and make a 4-week commitment to unplug and go offline on Sundays.

In today's podcast episode, I share really candidly the surprising results of my experiment and how much it has changed my life. (Oh and Jesse also shares about his current morning routine and a type of chair we love. I talk about a book I finished recently and the one food I've been loving in my first trimester.

    In This Episode:

[02:14] Listen in as Jesse shares about his morning routine and an outdoor chair that we love.

[06:13] I tell you about a book I recently finished that goes along so well with this podcast episode.

[09:26] Let's talk about my Unplugged Sundays Experiment.

[09:59] For years, I justified working on Sunday for a variety of reasons.

[11:30] … but really it was a lack of trust in God and trying to control things in my own strength.

[13:03] Rather than making a big longterm commitment, I did a four-week-long trial of not working on Sunday.

[16:31] The benefits of the time off have been incredible. I share the different surprises that have happened along the way.

[18:06] Why I now feel so much more productive in the 6 days I do work.

    51. Our HUGE announcement! Sep 17, 2019
    Show notes

The biggest surprise of our lives: I’M PREGNANT!!!!!!

The fertility specialist said we weren’t even a candidate for IVF, but y’all, our God is bigger than a specialist’s diagnosis or multiple tests that said it would never, ever be a possibility.

When we got the devastating new last year that we would never be able to conceive again — even with a lot of fertility help — we decided to grieve and find closure and then let the dream of expanding our family through pregnancy die. Instead, we felt God leading us to foster and we spent all summer working towards getting licensed.

Two days after we finished all the foster care licensing requirements, we found out we were expecting (through a crazy set of circumstances!)

It was the most hilarious and humbling gift from God ever. To say we were in complete shock would be an understatement.

I never thought I’d get to carry another life inside of me. Every day is a gift. The morning, noon, and night sickness is a gift. And instead of wanting to just get the first trimester over with, I’m seeking to savor each day as best as is possible.

If you want all the details on how we found out (I thought I was going through early menopause!) or how we told the kids, be sure to tune in to today’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show.

Oh and yes, we’re still moving forward with foster care (we found out two days after our home study was finished!) and I’m due April 30th — the same due date I had with Silas almost 11 years ago!!

Note: I know that many of you are struggling through the pain of infertility right now. My heart’s desire is that by me sharing this, it would in no way cause additional pain for you but would give you a glimmer of hope. God is still in the miracle-working business and He can do anything. At the same time, please know that my heart has hurt for you as I thought about announcing our news today. You are seen. You are not forgotten. And I would be honored to pray for you — just send me a message and I’ll pray for you by name

    In This Episode:

[00:25] We have some HUGE news for you! I’m PREGNANT and it’s complete and unexpected miracle!

[02:53] Why going through infertility testing and procedures helped us realize the miracle we had in our three children.

[03:27] We found out two days after finishing our foster care home study (the last portion required to get licensed).

[04:30] I was feeling super anxious and irritable and stressed about the home study, which seemed out of character for me.

[05:27] All the details on the crazy way we ended up finding out and why I thought I was going through early menopause!

[11:00] My heart goes out to all the women who are struggling with infertility. My hope is that this announcement gives you hope not sadness.

[12:51] Want to know how the kids took the news?

    50. 4 Rhythms You Need in Your Life (with Rebekah Lyons) Sep 10, 2019
    Show notes

“We don’t need to hustle to prove something God already says is true.”

I can’t stop thinking about this quote, ever since I read it in Rebekah Lyon’s book, Rhythms of Renewal.

If we’re gut honest, how often are we working so hard in an effort to try to impress someone else, earn someone’s approval, or prove something to ourselves or others?

Jesus came so we can stop striving and instead rest in the beautiful truth that we are enough in Him. We don’t have to do more, be more, try harder, do better, and hustle like crazy to win His favor. In Christ, we are pre-approved. There’s rest and freedom at the foot of the Cross!

I was so honored to get to sit down and record a podcast episode with Rebekah Lyons recently on what it looks like to live from a place of renewal and rest instead of from a place of stress. We talked about the 4 rhythms everyone needs to have in their life, how easy it can be to incorporate them, and how much of a difference they can make.

She also shared about their recent adoption and how this “holy interruption” has beautiful impacted their life in ways she couldn’t dream or imagine.

If you struggle with feeling overwhelmed, constantly stressed, and/or always needing to try to rightly control every situation in your life, don’t miss this week’s podcast episode.

    In This Episode:

[01:18] Rebekah shares a bit about herself, her story, and how her new daughter has dramatically changed her life and work.

[04:21] Listen as Rebekah and I share the books we’re reading.

[07:54] Hear why Joy, Rebekah’s new daughter, is saving her life.

[14:13] What’s saving my life? My gratitude journal!

[15:36] Rebekah and I dive into what inspired her to write her newest book.

[21:17] Learn the four rhythms we should focus on in our lives and in what order.

[25:12] View this book as an “undo” type of book. It’s not meant to add to your plate but to clear it.

[26:45] Practice the rhythms by doing small things every day. Rebekah gives great starting points and ideas!

    49. Finding Good Friends Sep 03, 2019
    Show notes

“We can’t win when we go it alone.” -Jessica Honegger

In this week's podcast, I share more of my struggle with friendships. I talk about the truths that have set me free to develop deep relationships and some of my best tips for finding good friends. If you've struggled to develop deep relationships or you know someone who struggles with finding and keeping friends, I hope this episode encourages you.

In this episode, Jesse and I also share what’s saving our lives this week and we are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Jesse just got back from an awesome fishing trip in Louisiana, and due to weather, there were a lot of flight delays. He was so thankful that we invested in TSA Pre-check. And I’m just in love with my leopard print flats. They can be dressed up or dressed down, and they’ve added a fun pop to my wardrobe.

Also, we talk about a book I listened to that Jesse talked about on a previous episode... and let's just say that I had some pretty strong opinions to share about it. :)

    In This Episode:

[01:01] Jesse chats about his fishing trip to Louisiana.

[03:19] What’s saving our lives right now? For Jesse, it is TSA Pre-check. For me, it’s my leopard print flats!

[06:24] Listen in to hear what books we are reading/listening to -- and how Jesse has such different tastes in books!

[12:41] I read an email from a listener who’s honesty inspired this episode.

[14:11] The first step to finding good friends: Learn to let go of the lies you believe about yourself and replace those lies with truth.

[16:39] Seek relationship, not approval and stop looking for perfection.

[21:08] Be the initiator when reaching out to new friends.

[23:30] Go first with honesty! It’s worth the risk.

[24:10] Don’t give up too soon!

[25:03] Believe the best in the other person.

    [25:27] Keep short accounts.

    48. Helping Our Kids Overcome Shame (with Kristin Maher) Aug 27, 2019
    Show notes

Kristin Maher, author of the new kids’ book, The Awfulizer: Learning to Overcome the Shame Game, sat down in my office studio last week and had a really honest conversation with me.

We talked about what shame is, how to help our kids understand and recognize their Shame Voice, and what to do when your older child doesn’t feel like they are good enough.

We also had a really frank discussion about shame and body image and how many of us adults still struggle with shame and those feelings of not being enough.

If you’ve ever felt like, “If people knew everything about me, they would leave” or “I don’t measure up to others” or you have a child who struggles with believing lies about themselves, please do not miss this conversation with Kristin.

It might step on your toes a bit (it stepped on mine!), but I think it will also give you hope, encouragement, and practical steps you can take for yourself and your kids to start overcoming the Shame Game.

Let’s break free from the lies we believe and the Shame Voices that are telling us we’re not enough... and let’s walk in the truth! This is how we start breaking the Shame Cycle — for ourselves and the next generation!

Psst! You’ll also get to hear about our current reads and why robot vacuums are lifesavers!

    In This Episode:

[01:19] Kristin gives a brief introduction of herself and her family.

[02:16] Kristin and I share what books we’re reading right now.

[05:50] Hear what’s saving our lives right now -- including a robot vacuum.

[09:04] Kristin discusses why she decided to write her book and her inspiration.

[11:56] How did shame manifest itself in Kristin's life?

[12:49] What process did Kristin follow to overcome her shame talk and how long did it take?

[14:39] What can parents do to help their children process, overcome, and prevent shame?

[18:09] How can parents talk to their older children about shame?

[21:21] We discuss ways to change our self-talk to be an example to our children.

[27:42] Let's stop believing the lies and begin living in the truth!

    47. The Power of a Morning Routine Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

We're in the middle of getting back to the swing of things around here now that school has started back. One of the things that has made such a difference for us in jumping back in to getting everyone out the door early in the mornings is the fact that we had a great morning routine throughout the summer.

In this episode, we talk in-depth about our morning routines, what they look like, and why they work so well for us. Whether you love or loathe the idea of morning routines, I think this episode will inspire and encourage you! By the way, need some encouragement and accountability, to create a routine of your own? Check out my 5-Days to a Better Morning Challenge!

We also share details of something exciting Jesse got to do recently, our trip to Table Rock Lake, Jesse's surprising discovery (I can't WAIT for you to hear this one!), books we've recently finished, and the mascara I accidentally fell in love with.

    In This Episode:

[02:02] Jesse got to see Jocko Willink at a conference!

[06:27] Hear what’s saving our lives and why Jesse is eating crow… (hint: it involves audio)

[09:34] Want to know what we’re reading/listening to?

[13:16] Learn why having a morning routine leads to success… not a lack of sleep!

[15:07] I share my current morning routine (yes, you can laugh because it's fairly unconventional!)

[19:02] It’s Jesse’s turn! Hear about his morning routine.

[20:55] A morning routine impacts my life for the better because it:

    1. Helps me to consistently stick to important habits.
    2. Provides a solid foundation for my day.
    3. Sets me up for success.

[24:16] What works for me won't necessarily work for you, but I hope this episode inspires you to be intentional with your mornings.

    46. Modesty, Legalism, and Grace Aug 13, 2019
    Show notes

Ever since Jesse and I did our show on breaking free from legalism, we’ve received a lot emails, messages, and comments all asking similar questions.

The questions were all something like, "If you don't adhere to legalism, what should you adhere to?" "How do you determine what you should believe and practice?" "What kind of convictions should a Christian have when it comes to dress, music, dating, a woman's role, etc.?"

In this episode, Jesse and I dig into the concept of standards and how to know what to believe and practice in light of grace and the Gospel. We tackle some tough topics -- like modesty -- and share how we process through what is right and wrong when it comes to standards.

While I don't expect you to agree with every thing we say, I hope that this episode will challenge you to think about what you believe and why you believe it and the choices you make and why you make them.

    In This Episode:

[00:26] - Welcome back to the show! This is a different show than we usually do because we're going to take a deep dive into the topic of legalism.

[01:57] - Listen as I read the listener email that inspired us to do this show.

[03:28] - Jesse starts off with his thoughts on the email and the definition of standards.

[06:03] - Is your reason for doing something to please someone else or to "fit in"?

[07:09] - The basis of any standard should start with your heart.

[10:14] - Who do you believe God is? Your actions might show that it's actually different than what you say.

[11:42] - I share my favorite phrase in the Bible that applies to this topic and how it has profoundly impacted my life.

[17:35] - So what standards should we set? How do we decide how we should act and what convictions we should hold?

    45. The Apps & Tools We Use to Plan Our Day Aug 06, 2019
    Show notes

A question I get asked often is, "How do you plan your day and keep track of everything in an organized manner?"

Well, in this week's episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Jesse and I not only share what's saving our lives and talk about books we are reading, but we also give you an insider look into how we each plan our days.

Jesse’s time management plan is a little more detailed than mine, but it works for him. He uses his Appigo app, his Michael Hyatt Full Focus Journal, and our family Google calendar to keep his tasks in order. For me, keeping three separate calendars would feel like overkill, but it works well for him.

I like using my Google Calendar to brain dump all of the tasks and the activities for those tasks into one place. I share how I use a hybrid system of Google calendar + a time-blocked to do list and talk about why this works so well for me.

Oh and I also talk about one tip that makes such a difference that I was a little embarrassed to admit until I saw that Cal Newport does it, too!

    In This Episode:

[00:26] - Welcome back to the show! We share about our recent trip to Georgia, our time at Sweetwater Creek State Park, and my Mastermind one-day event.

[05:31] - What’s saving our lives? Jesse: Appigo, his to-do list app. Mine: our electric tea kettle!

[07:54] - Jesse’s reading The E-Myth Real Estate Investor. I just finished The Last Christmas in Paris.

[11:51] - Today we wanted to share how we plan our days, especially since summer is almost over!

[16:24] - With his 3 different calendars, how is Jesse not duplicating work/tasks?

[17:25] - Learn why I love using Google Calendar to brain dump my day!

[19:00] - While I don’t usually use my calendar for everyday tasks when I’m developing a habit I set a daily reminder.

[20:39] - In the evening, I block out my time for the next day.

[21:48] - My one not-so-minimalist habit is re-writing my task list halfway through the day and I share the three reasons why I think this is so helpful.

[26:02] - Set realistic timeframes for the tasks on your list and start simple.

[27:35] - Download my PDF on how I plan my days with Google calendar.
