It started with then, British Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel. He recognized the need for a professional and respected police force in London after years of lawlessness and urban social disorder. With time the police or "bobby's" earned public endorsement. Some of the same traditions and values that Peel envisioned in a professional police force, are alive and well today.
