Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Lindsay Hawker Jun 15, 2020

On March 26th 2007 the body of Lindsay Hawker was found in a bathtub filled with soil on the balcony of a fourth floor apartment in Ichikawa, a suburb near Tokyo. Lindsay had moved to Japan five months earlier to teach English. Despite almost 10 police officers at the scene the killer managed to escape and evade police for the next 2 and a half years.

Going Home: Steven Stayner Jun 08, 2020

On December 4th 1972, 7 year old Steven Stayner was abducted on his way home from school. He grew up with a new identity, believing his parents had given him away to the man he now called Dad. Steven was repeatedly sexually assaulted, physically abused and psychologically broken by his captor. He never tried to escape, until 7 years later when he heard another little boy being told the same lies and knew he could not let it happen again.

Silenced: Lucy McHugh Jun 01, 2020

In July of 2018, 13 year old Lucy McHugh left her home in Mansel Road East, Southampton just before 9am. CCTV captured her walking intently in the direction of a Sports Centre nearby. The next morning her body was discovered in a wooded area overlooking the same sports ground. An arrest was made almost immediately but obstructions in the investigation meant that her killer wasn’t brought to justice until a year later.

Road Rage: Lee Harvey May 25, 2020

On December 1st 1996, a couple were driving home after a night at the pub. The driver Lee Harvey was found stabbed over 30 times beside his car, his girlfriend Tracie Andrews was beaten and bloodied, holding him, when a witness called 999. The murder was a suspected road rage incident. Tracie publicly appealed for the driver of the other car to come forward, the nation was stunned. They feared a killer walked among them... they were right.

Not In Vain: Etan Patz May 24, 2020

This is the first episode in our new monthly mini series where we focus on cases that led to changes in legislation, protocol and practices. A consequence of an event that is "not in vain" has worth and means something.
The disappearance of 6 year old Etan Patz in 1979 changed the public consciousness of missing children, he was one of the first children to appear on a milk carton and the anniversary of his disappearance is globally acknowledged as International Missing Childrens Day.

No Honour in Murder: Shafilea Ahmed May 18, 2020

Shafilea Ahmed was like most teenage girls growing up in the UK. She was determined and ambitious with a rebellious streak. She got good grades in school, wanted to wear the latest fashion, to have a boyfriend and to break free from her family home and live independently. The difference between Shafilea and most teenage girls is that she was born in to, and brought up around one culture, but, was expected to abide by the rules of another.
What would typically be seen as normal teenage behaviour was seen as shameful by her strict parents. Shafilea resisted her parents demands, she knew that she would be forced into an arranged marriage to an older cousin and wanted a different life for herself. 
The shame her parents felt she brought on the family name was intense and this continuously took precedence over their daughter's well-being, happiness and ultimately, her life.

On December 6th 1961 a 17 year old, unwed mother, a ward of the state, gave birth while living in a school for girls. She was forced to give the baby up for adoption, hoping that one day they would meet again. Years later when she began searching for her son she discovered he had died aged just 3 and a half. On September 13th 2016 a 911 call was made by a woman claiming to be abducted by a man called Shawn Grate. For the next 15 minutes the dispatcher kept the woman on the line as police officers scrambled to find her. The woman’s captor lay sleeping as she desperately tried to find a way out. When the police officers arrived they found the caller, her kidnapper and 2 bodies.
