Story Games and What Makes Great Story in Video Games Dec 14, 2015
    Show notes

Stephan, Justin, and Kevin go into the weeds on “story games,” or games that rely heavily on choices and character. Basically, the literary world of video games. This differs from the “Storytelling in Video Games” episode, in that here we are focusing on delving deeper into what these games that many of us writers love really are.

You are there to play the story. Largely this means caring about how you interact with the other characters in this world, in a roleplaying way. This is that not the type of game where you focus on killing bad guys or gaining levels. This is about the story 100 percent.

We delved into this, and focused on how these types of games are unique and differ from something like World of Warcraft by talking further about such games as Heavy Rain, Walking Dead, Life is Strange, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Minecraft: Story Mode.

Bob Goodman on Writing Batman, Superman, and Superheroes for TV Nov 30, 2015
    Show notes

Bob Goodman shares his wonderful advice about breaking into writing for television. He talks about breaking in as a writers assistance, production assistant (PA), script coordinator, or any way you can get a foot into the industry, as jobs often go to those on the inside.

Another way Bob says to go about it is to work on your spec scripts and submit to the many fellowships out there. A lot of them have a diversity focus, so work that angle if you can.

But mostly, move to LA, network with everyone you can, and write, write, write. You have to build a portfolio of resume samples.

A quick podcast-bomb: Bob said that a great podcast for all the steps involved in getting into writing for TV is the “Children of Tendu.”

So check out the podcast for more details on the points above and more great advice from the writer of such awesome titles as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Superman: Unbound, and Elementary.

Storytelling in Video Games Nov 23, 2015
    Show notes

This week Justin, Stephan, and Kevin focus on the larger picture of storytelling in video games, and discuss what they mean when they say story in video games. There are various levels of storytelling in games – some games are all about the story, while others tell story through the mechanics and have very little dialogue or cutscenes.

This was a fun episode for Kevin, because he has no video game experience aside from playing them, so he was able to ask Justin and Stephan more questions.

Some topics that came up include:

How should you be thinking about story in games?

Where should you be focusing your writing if you’re aspiring to write for games?

What does it mean to write multi-faceted storytelling, instead of simply writing one linear story as you would with a novel or screenplay?

The trio also talked about the more traditional games where its hack and slash mixed with cutscenes, why level design is so important to telling the story, and more. And yes, Pacman came up as an example.

Writing Indie Games and Comics with Matthew Ritter Nov 16, 2015
    Show notes

This week Justin, Stephan, and Kevin talk with Matthew Ritter, a multi-medium writer who just launched his indie game titled Boon Hill. Matt worked at Telltale Games and wrote the graphic novels Retropunk and Nova Phase.

He made his own game?! Yes, what a guy.

Matt talks about the difficulties of building PR support for indie games (especially the kind he made - a graveyard simulator). He sheds light on how writers can get into putting together a game on their own (it's tough), what it takes to work in the studio system, and he survives as a freelancer.

He even breaks down the realities of writing for comics... Telling it like it is.

If you're interested in comics, screenwriting, game writing and especially indie games, this episode is for you!

There's also a fun moment with some dogs... You'll have to listen to hear it.

Join Stephan Bugaj, Justin Sloan, and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss what it really takes to establish yourself as a creative writer.

NOTE: We apologize for the audio not being perfect in this episode. We're taking steps to ensure better audio quality in the future.

You have to be 100 percent dedicated ...which can be tough advice, we get that. But here we discuss the commitment needed to make it as a writer if you hope to make it a career.

We don’t say to drop everything and only write, but discuss how to make sacrifices and when to be committed to it.

    The group further discussed:

    • Sacrificing sleep. Or work (if you can do it).
    • Keep in mind that how good you are is relative (just because your college English teacher said you were amazing, that same level of amazingness may not be the same when surrounded by professionals.
    • Watch out for the scams!

Welcome to the Creative Writing Career Podcast Oct 26, 2015
    Show notes

Welcome to the Creative Writing Career podcast!

Join Stephan Bugaj, Justin Sloan, and Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss what the Creative Writing Career podcast is going to be all about.

    WHAT WILL WE BE DISCUSSING?

This episode starts with our introductions, and you can see our bios below. The exciting news for Justin is his new novel Allie Strom and the Ring of Solomon, and the fact that he’s a panelist at the 2015 Austin Film Festival.

    First off, who are we?

Stephan Bugaj started screenwriting professionally at Pixar Animation Studios, having transitioned from a decade of working as a technical artist to co-creating two development projects. He subsequently left the studio to head-up all writing and directing for Telltale Games, and co-write the first episode of Tales From the Borderlands and co-direct the first episode of Game of Thrones. He then left that studio to head to Los Angeles where he works as VP of Creative for Hanson Robotics and as a film, games, and virtual reality writer-director working with WakingUp Media, Visioneer Studios, Marza Animation Planet, Digital Quilt, Limitless VR, Penny Pop, Pocket Gems, and others. His feature screenplay Human, After All is currently out for financing with John H. Lee (Cut Runs Deep, Sayonara Itsuka) attached to direct.

Justin Sloan is a video game writer at Telltale Games, where he has worked on such titles as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. His novels include such titles as Falls of Redemption and Back by Sunrise, and he dabbles in screenwriting. Justin studied writing at the Johns Hopkins MA in Writing program and screenwriting at UCLA. Before becoming an author, Justin served in the Marines and has lived in Japan, Korea, and Italy. He recently joined the Self Publishing Answers podcast as a third co-host.

*Kevin Tumlinson* was born in Wild Peach, Texas, in 1972. He spent most of his childhood running barefoot in places no sane human would tread even with boots on. With only three fuzzy channels on television and the invention of game consoles still slightly out of reach, Kevin learned at an early age to keep himself and his family and friends entertained with stories and anecdotes. He did not always tell his family and friends that these were stories or anecdotes. Kevin has been writing professionally since he was twelve years old, and has an ever-growing library of novels, novellas, and non-fiction books to his credit. He is an award-winning copywriter, and once endured a shockingly long career in marketing, media, and documentary television. He's also a renowned expert on pants jokes, with over a thousand in his repertoire--far greater than the actual number of pants he owns.

And how do we all link? Well, Kevin and Justin co-host another podcast, the Self Publishing Answers podcast, and are writing a novel together with Nick Thacker (the third co-host of the Self Publishing Answers podcast). Stephan and Justin co-authored the book Creative Writing Career 2, which also includes an interview with Kevin. So it’s a triforce of awesomeness.

We wanted to start this podcast after the positive reception of the Creative Writing Career books, and we wanted to take it to the next level. We also wanted to address the problem of so much mediocre advice out there offered for large amounts of money – so we’re here to offer better advice (ours and that of those we interview) for free!

So think of us as mentors, sitting down to share our thoughts on writing with you, in the areas of books, film, video games, and more!

For these discussions and to join us on this journey, stay tuned!

Screenwriting for Disney and the videogame Shadow of Mordor with Elias Madias Oct 26, 2015
    Show notes

Join Stephan Bugaj, Justin Sloan, and Kevin Tumlinson as they sit down with Elias Madias to discuss his journey as a screenwriter and video game writer.

SHADOW OF MORDOR! That’s right, that’s what we said. But before we get there, we talked with Elias about how he came up in the industry through being a Director’s Assistant, how he found a writing partner and bust down the first door in his way (to get to Disney!), and how he got into games (the secret? Connections. Networking. Duh).

He spent a few minutes talking about the Austin Film Festival, since he’ll be on a panel with Justin. The key there is to go and talk to everyone as peers, because everyone’s there to have a good time. And don’t ask – wait for them to offer.

And Justin terrified the guest by speculating that the AFF panel may be recorded! Check out the Austin ON STORY podcast to see if their panel makes it.

Want to get an intro to Elias, check out this episode! Want to see what’s he is like when spending too many hours at a bar, go to the Austin Film Festival!
