    CraftLit

CraftLit — Annotated Audiobooks for Busy People

Love classic literature…or wish you did?

CraftLit is a weekly podcast featuring classic audiobook chapters paired with entertaining literary commentary that makes great books easier—and more fun—to understand. Host Heather Ordover explains historical references, vocabulary, and cultural context before each chapter so listeners can fully enjoy the story.

Think of it as a global book club for classic literature, perfect for listening while commuting, crafting, walking, or doing chores.

CraftLit has been in continuous weekly production since 2006, making it one of the longest-running literature podcasts. Listeners also send in voicemail comments that keep the show feeling like a lively reading group.

    Authors featured include:

    • Jane Austen
    • Mark Twain
    • Elizabeth Gaskell
    • Mary Shelley
    • Wilkie Collins
    • Alexandre Dumas
    • Robert Louis Stevenson

Recent and current readings include Mark Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford.

Classic audiobooks—because loving great books in a busy world is tough.

Love, romance, societal drama, and a dash of wit so sharp it could slice through butter! Persuasion is the crème de la crème of Jane Austen's works, and we're here to unravel its charm together.

So, get your petticoats and top hats ready, friends! It's time to get Austen-tatious with Persuasion!

    159: Chs 21-22 — Flatland (End of Book) Feb 13, 2010
    Show notes

Book chat begins around 11 minutes in. - End of Book!

    Yowsa!

Yes, the end of Flatland. End of my romance with math...or my infatuation that turns out to be completely misleading like how that guy was who I dated while I was teaching at the reading school who... um...TMI? Infatuation? Maybe. Because I fooled myself into thinking I could balance my checkbook if I understood Flatland. There is no Transitive Property in my life.

The Lightning Thief (by Rick Riordan)! Read the book...not so much the movie thing...

    And that's about it!

Have a great time until I get back with Persuasion (thanks Meg!).

    158: Chs 18-19 — Flatland Feb 07, 2010

    Book talk begins at: 25:45

    • I conquer Greenland. (And there was much rejoicing…)
    • Some links: Needle Noodles!
    • How do I love the Valkyrie? SOoooo much!
    • Link to Christen Haden's book "Creepy Cute Crochet"; Terry Pratchett's sad speech; "Too Late to Apologize" based on a Timbaland song (see below) and the nifty work of the SoomoPublishing group, and, um… Donnegal Tweed in #809 teal, anyone?

    Lyrics to "Too Late…"

    Halfway across the globe

And we're standing on new ground

    Screaming 'cross the waves

    You can't hear a sound

There's no fair trials, no trade, no libertie, no tea

We've colonized America; we won't stand for tyranny,

Oh king And it's too late to apologize

It's too late I said it's too late to apologize

    It's too late

We've paid your foolish tax, read the acts

    And they just won't do

We want to make it clear, we believe this much is true

All men were created with certain

    Unalienable rights

Among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit Of happiness

And it's too late to apologize

It's too late I said it's too late to apologize It's too late…

    • And finally: How do we love thee, Big Bang Theory!!!! Go Flatland!
    • Karen in Surrey BC: says to checkout the "excellent film version of this story from 1961 called The Innocents with Deborah Kerr." (Warning: SCARY!) And I blew it and owe an apology to Groucho. He's the one who said, "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member" was Groucho.

We finish the background info to Flatland today (and you thought we were already IN the story, didn't you!) and next episode head into... The Encounter! Da Da Duuuuummmmmmm

This week some gluten free fun for you UK travelers and denizens (beer, cider, food, mobile phone 24/7 beer guidance), I wax rhapsodic over the CAMRA guide, find the 3/50 Project (yes!), and knit, knit, spin, and knit.

AH! And I find a speed knitter (like the Yarn Harlot) who actually SHOWS HER TENSIONING! Cool "knit in any language" translator (and one just for Finnish), ANOTHER book by Anahad (my former student), a Harper's Article you might want to pass around, an article about a provocative statement by Harvard's President (it'll make sense when you listen to the episode), funny comic on centripetal force, and our December Incentive Winners: Andrew, Melanie, and Robin!

OH! And I forgot to say: I found an amazing blog post with a spectacular list of podcasts! (Yeah, we're on there too, but there are new ones I've not heard of. V exciting!)
