CraftLit — Annotated Audiobooks for Busy People

Love classic literature…or wish you did?

CraftLit is a weekly podcast featuring classic audiobook chapters paired with entertaining literary commentary that makes great books easier—and more fun—to understand. Host Heather Ordover explains historical references, vocabulary, and cultural context before each chapter so listeners can fully enjoy the story.

Think of it as a global book club for classic literature, perfect for listening while commuting, crafting, walking, or doing chores.

CraftLit has been in continuous weekly production since 2006, making it one of the longest-running literature podcasts. Listeners also send in voicemail comments that keep the show feeling like a lively reading group.

Authors featured include:

• Jane Austen
• Mark Twain
• Elizabeth Gaskell
• Mary Shelley
• Wilkie Collins
• Alexandre Dumas
• Robert Louis Stevenson

Recent and current readings include Mark Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford.

Classic audiobooks—because loving great books in a busy world is tough.

Canterville Ghost Sneak Peek Jun 14, 2013

Show notes

It occured to me that you haven't a clue what beauty awaits you in "The Canterville Ghost"!

This was subscriber-only audio which now lives in the Shoppe. It's such a hidden gem of Oscar Wilde's I started to feel bad that more of you didn't know how fantastic is is.

So.

Here!

This is most of the first bit. There are three parts which make up the whole book. If you want it, you can get it here.

The Age of Innocence starts June 28, 2013.

In my effort to be more efficient, I've also created two email lists:

one for folks who are new to this whole CraftLit/Just-the-Books thing and would like more information
one for folks who have been around for awhile but would like to be informed of any newsy bits (travel, new books, surveys for next books) when and if there are newsy bits

Hope that's good and useful for y'all!

See you in two weeks!

Bleak Sneak Peek Jun 04, 2013

Show notes

Just in case you wondered what the heck was up with Bleak House on the subscriber feed (and why ANYone would want to listen to something called Bleak anything) I thought you might enjoy a sneak peek. (Details on Streaming Subscriber option; details on Download-only Subscriber option)

This is a sneak peek of chapter 1.

And in case you were wondering what the EeBooks are, this is a link to the start of the Enhanced eBook of Bleak House Chapter 1 as a ClassLit-BleakHouse PDF. We're still working on getting an ePub for iOS version and a Kindle version (formatting for these platforms is REALLY weird and wonky—but we're close). The EeBooks link out to the CraftLit and JtB audio as well as helpful contextual links from the book text itself.

Direct icon-links go to the CraftLit and Just the Books mp3 audio which covers the indicated chapter

Still a few spaces left for Hanging Out online in a face-to-face book group chat about Jane Eyre! 8:30am EDT, 1:30pm EDT, and 9:30pm EDT are the times on Wednesday June 5 (which gets almost every timezone at something like a convenient hour).
