    Beer Styles # 34 - Dark Lager Jul 03, 2019
    Show notes

    Dark Lager
    -2 Subcategories:
    A.Subcategory: American-Style Dark Lager
-Color – Light Brown to Very Dark
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low malt aroma and flavor may include low levels of caramel
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low
-Perceived Bitterness: Very low to low, and dissipates quickly.
    -Body: Low
    -ABV: 4.1%-5.6%
    B.Subcategory: German-Style Schwarzbier
    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
Schwarzbier ("shvahrts-beer"), is simply German for black beer. It doesn't mean that it's necessarily heavy or light in body, although most examples tend to be lighter. Unlike Porters or Stouts and other dark beers, they are not overly bitter with the burnt and heavily roasted malt characteristics that these styles tend to depend on. Instead, hops are used to achieve a good portion of the bitterness. Smooth on the palate, soul lifting, and refreshing with a dry finish, Schwartzbiers make a great alternative for the winter months, especially when you're looking for a lighter beer, but one with depth of color and a bittersweet taste that might bring to mind coffee, cocoa, or licorice.
-Color – Very dark brown to black, with a pale-colored head.
-Clarity: Beer color may be too dark to perceive. When clarity is perceivable, chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium malt aroma displays a mild roasted malt character. Malt sweetness is low to medium, and displays a mild roasted malt character without bitterness.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Low to Medium
    -Body: Low to Medium-Low
    -ABV: 3.8%-4.9%
-Glassware: Pilsener Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass

Craft Brew News # 33 - Beer Discrimination and State Protectionism Jun 28, 2019
    Show notes

    Craft Brew News – 06/28/2019
    (Courtesy of Brewbound.com)
US Supreme Court Strikes Down Tennessee Residency Requirement
Six months after hearing oral arguments in a constitutional challenge to Tennessee’s two-year residency requirement for obtaining a retail liquor license, the United States Supreme Court yesterday struck down a controversial stipulation that had prevented out of state retailers from setting up shop in the Volunteer State.
In that case, chain alcohol retailer Total Wine, along with Doug and Mary Ketchum, who bought a mom-and-pop liquor store in 2016 after moving to Memphis from Utah, challenged the two-year residency requirement, which they said amounted to economic protectionism.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit sided with Total Wine and the Ketchums, ruling that the residency requirement violated the Constitution and the 21st Amendment’s dormant Commerce Clause, which was established to prevent states from engaging in economic protectionism.
In writing his majority opinion, issued yesterday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito deemed Tennessee’s two-year residency requirement for retail license applicants unconstitutional because it “blatantly favors the state’s residents and has little relationship to public health and safety.”
The high court added that the 10-year residency requirement for license renewals and a provision blocking publicly traded corporations from operating liquor stores in the state “are so plainly based on unalloyed protectionism that neither the Association nor the state is willing to come to their defense.”
    Deschutes Begins Selling Canned Water
    ** Check out Episode # 42 - Deschutes BrewMaster Brian Faivre **
In an effort to cut down on single-use plastic water bottles, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery has begun canning drinking water, according to the company’s blog.
Deschutes, the 10th largest Brewers Association-defined craft brewery, said its canned water would be available to purchase this summer at events throughout central Oregon, as well as Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe’s locations in Bend, Sunriver and Riverbend.
Bell’s Two Hearted Ale Named Top Beer by AHA
For the third consecutive year, Bell’s Brewery’s Two Hearted Ale is the top-ranked beer in the U.S. according to the American Homebrewers Association’s (AHA) Zymurgy magazine.
The Best Beers in America list, now in its 17th year, is populated by a survey of AHA members. Rounding out the top five, in order, were Russian River’s Pliny the Elder, Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, Founders Brewing’s KBS and The Alchemist’s Heady Topper.
“Receiving this honor once, twice even was incredible. But a third time? I am speechless and incredibly thankful to the homebrewing community and everyone who has helped make this beer what it is today,” Bell’s founder Larry Bell said in a press release.
Additionally, AHA members named Bell’s the top brewery in the U.S., followed by Founders, Russian River, Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head.
    BrewDog Loses Sex Discrimination Lawsuit
BrewDog’s attempt to draw attention to the gender wage gap ended with a man successfully suing the Scottish craft brewery for sexual discrimination, according to the Independent.
Thomas Bower filed a lawsuit against BrewDog after one the brewery’s bartenders refused to sell him a discounted Punk IPA, rebranded Pink IPA, in March 2018 unless the man identified as a woman.
Bower claimed that he felt “forced’ into identifying as a woman so he could buy the discounted beer. So he sued the company claiming “direct discrimination and breach of the Equality Act 2010,” the outlet reported.
District Judge Phillips agreed with Bower, ruling that the man had been “directly discriminated against” by BrewDog due to his gender.
“The fact that by identifying as female he was still able to purchase a Pink IPA makes no difference,” Phillips added. “I accept what Dr. Bower says, namely that identifying as female was the only way he could purchase a Pink IPA at a cost of £4.”
According to Vice, Bower was awarded $1,254 in damages, which he pledged to donate to charity (minus court fees).

    Beer Styles # 33 - Munich-Style Dunkel or European-Style Dark Lager Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

Munich-Style Dunkel or European-Style Dark Lager
    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
An old friend of Bavaria, Munich Dunkels are smooth, rich, and complex without being overly heady or heavy. They boast brilliant ruby hues from the large amounts of Munich malts used, and these malts also create a fuller-bodied beer. In addition, the decoction brewing process lends much depth and richness of flavor. Little to no hop aroma is detectable; the nose is dominated by malty notes of bread, nuts, and perhaps a touch of chocolate. Hop varieties used tend to be German Noble varieties like Tettnanger and Hallertau. Bitterness is often moderate, with just enough to balance out any sweetness.
    -2 Subcategories:
    A.Subcategory: Munich-Style Dunkel
Dunkels do not offer an overly sweet impression, but rather a balance between malt
and dark malt sweetness and hop character.
-Color – Light Brown to Brown
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt character is low to medium, with chocolate, roast, bread or biscuit aromas and flavors contributed by the use of dark Munich malt.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium-low to Medium
    -Body: Low to Medium-Low
    -ABV: 4.8%-5.3%
    B. Subcategory: European-Style Dark Lager
These beers offer a fine balance of sweet maltiness and hop bitterness.
-Color – Light Brown to Dark Brown
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt character is low to medium, with chocolate, roast, and malt aromas and flavors evident.

-Perceived Bitterness: Medium Low to Medium-High
    -Body: Low to MediumLow

Today it occupies the first place in sales among dark beers in Mexico. This beer is accompanied by a bright deep amber color, which is adorned with abundant, white and compact foam.
Negra Modelo was introduced in Mexico in 1925 as the dark beer called Modelo, to begin its great tradition. In 2014 it changed its image to a more sophisticated bottle but with the same content.

Episode # 50 - David Walker of Firestone Walker Brewing Co. Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

Michael has the privilege of speaking with David Walker of Firestone Walker Brewing Co. about the Brewery's beginnings, growth and where they are today as a force in Craft Beer.
Founded in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a pioneering regional craft brewery located on the coast of California. Our state-of-the-art brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. Our Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers. In 2015, we combined with another family-owned brewery, Duvel Moortgat, to help pave the way for our next 20 years and beyond. With deep roots in the Central Coast, we employ numerous sustainable practices that reflect our commitment to the local community and landscape.

    Craft Brew News # 32 - Cannabis Beverages and Texas Beer-To-Go Jun 21, 2019
    Show notes

    Craft Brew News – 6/21/19
    (courtesy of Brewbound.com)
Texas Governor to Sign Beer-to-Go into Law
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will officially make beer-to-go sales at the state’s manufacturing breweries legal during a June 15 signing ceremony at Austin Beerworks.
Abbott’s signature will allow consumers to purchase up to one case of beer (288 fl. oz.) per day from the state’s manufacturing breweries, starting September 1, 2019. Those sales would count against a 5,000-barrel cap that is already in place for on-premise taproom sales at those breweries.
His signature will also ensure operations of the state’s alcohol regulatory body, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), will continue.
Yards Brewing Begins Offering Contract Brewing Services
Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Company is now offering contract brewing services to fill about 60,000 barrels of excess capacity.
Yards, which opened a 70,000 sq. ft. production facility and taproom in November 2017, has about 100,000 barrels of annual capacity. Last year, Yards’ production declined 2 percent, to 40,296 barrels, according to data from the Brewers Association.
Yards said its first client is New Jersey’s Cape May Brewing Company, according to a press release on the Brewers of PA website. The company is seeking additional partners.
US House Committee Expected to Extend Federal Excise Tax Relief for Brewers
An effort to maintain reduced federal excise taxes (FET) on all brewers an importers could take a major step forward.
The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to extend tax cuts for alcohol producers and importers as part of the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019 (H.R. 3301) extender bill.
Although the committee’s version of tax relief would only extend through the end of 2020, alcohol industry trade groups say they plan to continue efforts to make the tax cuts permanent.
The extender would keep in place through December 31, 2020, an excise tax rate of $3.50 per barrel (a reduction from $7 per barrel) on the first 60,000 barrels for domestic brewers producing fewer than 2 million barrels annually. The legislation also sets the federal excise tax to $16 per barrel on the first 6 million barrels for all other brewers and beer importers, while maintaining the $18 per barrel excise tax for brewers producing more than 6 million barrels.
The Brewers Association, the Colorado-based trade group supporting over 7,000 small and independent breweries, also supports the bill also plans to continue working alongside the BI to advance the legislation.
Cannabiniers on Verge of Next Brewery Acquisition
Lighthouse Strategies — the company behind Cannabiniers and the Two Roots line of CBD- and THC-infused non-alcoholic craft beers – is closing in on its next brewery acquisition.
CEO and chairman Michael Hayford said the company could finalize the purchase of a craft beer company in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. before the end of June.
According to Hayford, who discussed his company’s strategy and outlook on the cannabis space at BevNET’s Cannabis Forum last week in New York City, the forthcoming acquisition will aid Lighthouse’s expansion into the Canadian cannabis market when drinkable products are permitted for sale later this year.
Though he declined to name the company, or discuss financial terms of the potential deal, Hayford said the brewing facility is capable of producing between 60,000 and 100,000 barrels of beer annually.
In the meantime, Hayford confirmed that Lighthouse has been working with San Diego’s Green Flash Brewing Company for contract beer production. Under the terms of that arrangement, Cannabiniers has access to 50,000 barrels of production capacity annually.

    Beer Styles # 32 - German-Style Maerzen / Oktoberfest Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

    German-Style Maerzen / Oktoberfest
    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
Before refrigeration, it was nearly impossible to brew beer in the summer due to the hot weather and bacterial infections. Brewing ended with the coming of spring, and began again in the fall. Thus, most were brewed in March (Märzen). These beers were kept in cold storage through the spring and summer months, or brewed at a higher gravity, so they'd last longer. Märzenbier is full-bodied, rich, and toasty, with a moderately high alcohol content. Its color can be anywhere from pale gold to medium amber, but is typically some shade of copper. Like other dark lagers, the aroma is driven by malt, not hops. Best enjoyed by the half liter in a Bavarian beer garden.
    -Color – Pale to reddish-brown
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Bready or biscuit malt aroma and flavor should be present. Sweet maltiness is medium-low to medium and leads to a muted clean hop bitterness. Malt flavors should be of light toast rather than strong caramel. Low level caramel character is acceptable.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Low, derived from noble-type hops.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium-low to Medium
    -Body: Medium
    -ABV: 5.1%-6.0%
    -Glassware: Mug or Stein
    -Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)

    Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%
    Notes / Commercial Description:

Both the festival and the special beer served there became known as Oktoberfest. Brewed from the finest German malt and hops, Brooklyn Oktoberfest is true to the original style, fullbodied and malty, with a bready aroma and light, brisk hop bitterness.

Craft Brew News # 31 - Dutch Craft Deals and Brew Dates Jun 14, 2019

    Craft Brew News – 6/14/19
Heineken Purchases Minority Stake in Oedipus
Heineken N.V. has acquired a minority stake in 7-year-old Amsterdam craft outfit Oedipus Brewing, according to a letter posted on the company’s website this week.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Heineken’s deal with Oedipus follows minority investments in Belize Brewing Company and London’s Brixton Brewery and Beavertown Brewery. The company also owns California’s Lagunitas Brewing, which produced more than 1 million barrels in 2018, according to U.S. trade group the Brewers Association.
In a letter to Oedipus’ fans, the company’s founders said the investment from Heineken would help make their “creative dreams a reality.” Those aspirations include opening a food and beer bar, launching a music and cultural venue, and building a sustainable farmhouse brewery near Amsterdam.
“It has been confidence-inspiring to see, despite our obvious differences, the extent to which we speak the same language,” Oedipus’ founders wrote. “And it has been great to see mutual trust and understanding grow with each conversation.”
Pascal Gilet, Heineken CEO of the Netherlands, said in a release that the world’s second largest beer manufacturer “can learn a lot from how Oedipus has developed and will develop in the future.”
Bumble to Open Brick-And-Mortar Bar in NYC
Dating app Bumble plans to open Bumble Brew — a coffee and wine bar — in New York’s SoHo neighborhood this fall, according to Bloomberg. The brick-and-mortar location will operate as a 70-seat coffee shop during the day and a wine bar with small plates during the evening, the outlet reported.
According to Bloomberg, the space will host “female chef demos, BFF parties, networking events, and date nights” in an effort to grow its networking site, Bumble Bizz.
In news that should please Brewers Association CEO Bob Pease and National Beer Wholesalers Association CEO Craig Purser, Bumble Brew will also serve beer. Last year, both executives suggested that smartphones and dating apps were stripping away on-premise drinking occasions.
“They don’t have to go to the club to meet a date, they just swipe right,” Purser said during the NBWA’s annual convention last Fall. “And if emerging LDAs are spending that kind of time on dating platforms and social media, beer’s got to be there too.”
For his part, Pease also told Beverage Daily that the iPhone is “a bigger threat” to beer than cannabis.
SEC Loosens Restrictions on Alcohol Sales
The 14 universities within the Southeastern Conference can decide whether to serve beer and wine during sporting events this fall, according to CBS.
For the last 30 years, alcoholic beverage were only available to SEC fans in premium seating areas, such as luxury boxes. However, starting August 1, those universities can begin offering alcoholic beverages in general seating areas.
Nevertheless, there are limits. Alcoholic beverages can only be sold at concession stands. Also, universities must end service:
    following the third quarter of football games;
    halfway through the second half of men’s basketball games;
    after the third quarter of women’s basketball games;
and during the middle of the seventh inning of baseball games.
Despite having the option to sell alcoholic beverages as of August 1, four top football schools — Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Mississippi State — won’t offer alcohol sales this year, 247Sportsreported.
    Anheuser-Busch Makes Renewable Electricity Deal
Anheuser-Busch InBev struck a “power purchase agreement” this week with San Francisco-based Recurrent Energy to buy renewable electricity credits from a 2,000 acre solar facility being built in Pecos County, Texas. Once the facility is completed in 2021, A-B said it would brew its top brands — Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and others — with 100 percent renewable electricity from wind and solar power

    Beer Styles # 31 - Vienna Style Lager Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

    Vienna-Style Lager
    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)
Named after the city in which it originated, a traditional Vienna Lager is brewed using a three step decoction boiling process.
Decoction Mashing is a way to conduct multi-step mashes without adding additional water or applying heat to the Mash Tun. It involves removing about a third of the Mash to another pot where it is heated to conversion temperature, then boiled and returned to the Mash Tun. Many brewers believe that the boiling of the mash gives the beer a flavor profile that cannot be achieved otherwise.
Munich, Pilsner, Vienna, and dextrin malts are used, as well wheat in some cases. Its color reliably falls between pale amber and medium amber—there should be a reddish hue to examples of this style. Noble hops are used subtly, with the resulting beer having a crisp quality, a toasty flavor and some residual caramel-like sweetness. Vienna Lager and German Märzen have much in common. Although Austrian in origin and rare these days, some classic examples come from Mexico, such as Dos Equis Amber, the result of late 19th century brewers immigrating from Austria.
    -Color – Copper to reddish-brown
-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Characterized by malty aroma and light malt sweetness, which should have a lightly toasted malt character.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.
-Perceived Bitterness: Low to medium-low, clean and crisp.
    -Body: Medium
    -ABV: 3.8%-4.3%
-Glassware: Pilsener Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass

Samuel Adams Boston Lager | Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)
    Brewed by:
    Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)
    Massachusetts, United States
    samueladams.com
    Style: Vienna Lager
    Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%
    Notes / Commercial Description:
Our original beer is full-flavored with a balance of malty sweetness contrasted by hop spiciness and a smooth finish.
Did you know that Jim Koch tastes each batch of Boston Lager to make sure that it reaches our high standards? Won 12 medals at the Great American Beer Festival, 7 of which were gold.
Eliot Ness | Great Lakes Brewing Co.
    Brewed by:
    Great Lakes Brewing Co.
    Ohio, United States
    greatlakesbrewing.com
    Style: Vienna Lager
    Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%
    Notes / Commercial Description:
Admittedly, it’s a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history’s most famous agent of prohibition. But it’s a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox.
FLAVOR - Almost untouchably smooth--armed with lightly toasted malts and noble hops.
