Beer Styles #44 - International Style Pale Ale Sep 11, 2019
    Show notes

    International-Style Pale Ale
-Color – Gold to light brown
-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Very low to medium malt flavor and aroma should be present. Low caramel malt aroma and flavor may be present.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Hop aroma is low to high. Hop flavor is very low to high. Hop character can vary widely depending on variety and origin of hops used, and should reflect attributes typical of non-U.S. and non-British variety hops.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium to High
    -Body: Low to medium
    -ABV: 4.4%-6.6%
    -Glassware: Pint Glass
    GABF 2018 Winners
    Gold
    Mai Tai P.A.,
Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill, Monterey, CA
    ABV: 6.5%
Notes: Three time GABF medal winner, including gold in 2018! Our drier, decidedly “tropical” IPA that’s light on bitterness, but heavy on hop aroma, courtesy of 100% Mosaic hops. One whiff and you get super intense notes of passion fruit, mango, and lychee. Grain bill of just American two-row malt and a clean fermentation keep it simple and allow these hops to shine.
    Silver
    Guayabera
    Cigar City Brewing, Tampa, FL
    ABV: 5.5%
    Notes:
Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in its four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City Brewing feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while its dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

Episode # 61 – The Art and Science of Beer – Merrimack Ales Sep 09, 2019
    Show notes

Michael interviews Adam Pearson, Founder/Owner at Merrimack Ales in Lowell, MA about his journey and efforts to open a new taproom (see link below to be a part of history!)
Merrimack Ales is seeking investment to expand operations and build out their taproom.
Check out their plans at https://mainvest.com/businesses/merrimackales
From the moment the water started boiling in the pot on the stove during my first attempt at home brewing, I knew instantly brewing was what I wanted to do with my life. While adding hops to the brewpot, ideas for my own brewery seeped into my brain as the swirl of steam enveloped the kitchen.
Could I really create a brewery that would reflect my weird mix of arty creativity and an analytical engineering brain, my passion for Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, my unwavering commitment to quality, process design, and experimentation?
It’s been almost 10 years since that day and I am thrilled that Merrimack Ales is now a reality. Each and every batch starts out with a hypothesis of what ingredients and techniques might work well together to create a unique and pleasing taste. We leverage the traditions of small batch craft brewing and then we tweak, we adjust, we calibrate and, of course, we taste.
Located just a mile from the famed Merrimack River in Lowell Massachusetts, our 6,000 square foot facility is now home to my dreams and to some of your new favorite brews!

Craft Brew News # 43 – Night Shift Expanding and Hard Seltzer Takes on IPAs Sep 06, 2019

Night Shift to Open $10 Million Brewery in Philadelphia, Expand Production in Everett, MA
Everett, Massachusetts-based Night Shift Brewing announced plans Wednesday to open a $10 million, 130,000 sq. ft. production brewery in Philadelphia.
Speaking to Brewbound, Night Shift co-founder Michael Oxton said the company is “committed” to opening the new brewery before the end of 2020.
The Philadelphia project is being financed through a combination of cash flow and bank debt, he added.
Night Shift’s three founders — Oxton, Rob Burns and Michael O’Mara — collectively own about 80% of the business, with friends and family holding the remaining stake in the company.
Oxton said “Since our beginning, we haven’t taken on any more investors and we have no plans to do so,”. “Our runway is fiercely independent for 100-plus years, and we have no plans of raising outside capital and letting another firm sort of dictate our decisions.”
Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Board of Zoning Adjustment approved Night Shift’s permit to operate a taproom inside a former Anheuser-Busch wholesaler warehouse, according to the Boston Globe, which first reported the story Wednesday.
In Philadelphia, Night Shift will lease the building, which is already equipped with refrigeration space, loading docks and a potential taproom location. The company plans to install a 100-barrel brewhouse in the space, which will immediately unlock 30,000 barrels of initial capacity. Over time, Night Shift could scale production at the facility to 200,000 barrels of capacity, although Oxton stressed that Night Shift remains committed to a philosophy of letting demand dictate growth.
In addition to opening the Philadelphia brewery, Night Shift is upgrading its Everett headquarters, replacing its 20-barrel brewhouse with a 60-barrel system. The new brewhouse is expected to be operational next month.
All of that demand has Night Shift on pace for 50% volume growth by the end of 2019. Oxton projects the company will produce more than 40,000 barrels, up from around 30,000 barrels in 2018.
Craft Brew Alliance Exploring All Options in the Wake of No Offer from A-B
Craft Brew Alliance CEO Andy Thomas had a rare off-cycle conference call with investors and analysts today after his company’s largest playmate, Anheuser-Busch InBev, declined its long-held option to purchase the Portland, Oregon-headquartered craft beer maker.
The call came two weeks after the August 23 deadline for A-B, which already owns 31.3% of CBA, to make an offer of $24.50 per share (about $328 million) to purchase the remainder of the company or pay a one-time fee of $20 million. A-B opted for the latter, leaving questions about the world’s largest beer manufacturer’s future interest in the smaller beer company known for brands such as Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook and others.
Since that time, CBA’s stock (BREW) has declined from $12.96 on August 22, the day before the deadline, to $9.28 at the end of trading today. It has sparked speculation that CBA might look to sell to another suitor or divest its brands, including fast-growing Kona. Another narrative emerged saying CBA and/or Kona were too entangled with A-B to ever be unlinked.
Thomas stressed that CBA’s management team is being “exhaustive” in making sure all options are considered before choosing the correct path forward. The company’s leadership team has begun working with independent board members, bankers and external advisors to explore alternatives, “strategic and otherwise,” and the conversations with A-B have continued as CBA tries to understand what a future relationship looks like, he said.
“We wouldn’t be in the discussions that we’re in right now if we thought status quo is an acceptable outcome,” he added. “It is not.”
The biggest CBA block is that Kona brand, which is pushing 500,000 barrels and growing “high-single to low-double-digits,” Thomas said.
Boston Beer Company is Taking Truly Hard Seltzer on Tap to Bars and Restaurants
Truly Hard Seltzer-maker Boston Beer Company announced today the nationwide launch of “Truly on Tap,” a new product that the company is calling ”one of the first hard seltzers available on draft” across the country.
Boston Beer CEO Dave Burwick told Brewbound, via email, that Truly on Tap is the Pure offering renamed. He noted that Truly on Tap shares many of the attributes of a vodka soda: “effervescent, clear, finished with a squeeze of fresh fruit” but with a lower ABV.
According to the sales sheet, Boston Beer appears to be positioning Truly on Tap as an alternative to light beer and spirits, attempting to capture happy hour and game-day occasions during the upcoming football season.
Citing off-premise sales data from market research firm IRI, the sales sheet notes that hard seltzer sales year-to-date have surpassed those of IPAs — the most popular craft beer style — through July 7.
Additionally, the company calls out a Radius study, which found that two-thirds of drinkers said they would substitute drinking a beer at a bar with hard seltzer if it were available. If that wasn’t a sobering stat for alcohol producers, Boston Beer cited a Harris Poll that the company commissioned last October that found 70% of 21- to 31-year-old consumers said they’d choose hard seltzer over other alcoholic beverages at bars and restaurants.
Truly, along with White Claw, already make up 85 percent the off-premise sales of hard seltzer offerings, according to market research firm Nielsen. The firm also projects the hard seltzer industry to generate $1 billion by the end of 2019.
Dogfish Head Nears National Distribution; Adds 45th State, Mississippi
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery is just five states away from completing national distribution.
The Milton, Delaware-based craft brewery, which merged with Boston Beer Company earlier this year, announced Monday the addition of its 45th state — Mississippi — via Capital City Beverages.
Sales of Dogfish Head products, such as 60 Minute IPA, Slightly Mighty IPA, SeaQuench Ale and 90 Minute IPA, as well as seasonal offerings, will begin in the state starting in early September.
Last year, Dogfish Head ranked as the 13th largest domestic craft brewery, with production of 275,000 barrels of beer, according to national trade group the Brewers Association. The company is on pace to grow to around 300,000 barrels by the end of this year, with net sales of $120 million.
The $300 million merger of Dogfish Head and Boston Beer — which makes the Samuel Adams, Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard cider brands — was completed in July.
Following the transaction, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch said the two brands would work to align into a single wholesaler network.
Koch told Brewbound in July, “We think monogamy works a lot better in wholesaler relationships than polygamy,”

    Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)
    Original Pale Ale
    Coopers Brewery Limited
    Australia
    ABV:
    4.5%
Notes: Our 'Pale' is naturally conditioned in the bottle or keg. This traditional Coopers brewing method produces the trademark sediment that gives our ales a distinctive, fine cloudy appearance.
This beer is a deep golden colour and pours with a generous level of foam. To unlock its full flavour potential, make sure to roll before pouring. No additives. No preservatives.
    Walking Backwards Australian-style Pale Ale
    Outer Light Brewing Company
    Connecticut, United States
    ABV:
    5.5%
Notes: In 2016, the Australian-style pale ale became a recognized beer style in the Great American Beer Fest. According to the guidelines, this style mimics an intensely fruity American IPA. So why call it a pale ale? No one really knows.
Our version of the Australian pale ale is a more traditional pale ale using Australian hops. In fact, we highlighted one of our favorite Australian hops - Summer. Summer hops are derived from the famed lager hop called Saaz. Summer hops produce strong pear and melon flavors, with a hint of tropical fruit lingering in the background. Our light-bodied pale ale drinks perfectly in the Australian summer.

Brandartica Advertising Anti-Agency - Nimble, Effective, and Wildy Creative
    About to explode……
    What does “Advertising Anti-Agency” mean?
It’s simple: We perform all the services a typical ad agency might, without all the b.s.
Brandartica offers clients only our most experienced, competent, and creative team — because that’s all we have. By eliminating non-productive agency roles, we run counter to the agency status quo. Some may consider this disruptive, and it is. That’s precisely how we like it.
We approach each client as if they or their project is a blank sheet of paper. We never assume we know the solution. We listen, we consider and we look for the unique opportunities that allow the creative process to represent, communicate and connect (to their audience). Going a little deeper, we aim to create a consistency or “golden thread” impacting all of a business or brand’s platforms and points of contact. Advertising and Branding are symbiotic. You cannot successfully do one without successfully doing the other.

Craft Brew News # 42 – Amazon Under Investigation and AB InBev Likes Peruvian Beer Aug 30, 2019
    Show notes

    Craft Brew News - 8/30/19
    (Courtesy of Brewbound.com)
Amazon’s California Alcohol Delivery Service Under Investigation
The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has opened an investigation into Amazon’s Prime Now beer, wine, and spirits delivery service in the state after wine database and news outlet Wine Searcher reported possible violations of California liquor law.
According to California liquor law, alcohol delivery services are required to have brick-and-mortar stores that operate for at least half the hours of their delivery operation.
When a Wine Searcher reporter went to visit the ecommerce giant’s brick-and-mortar location at 3334 North San Fernando Road in Los Angeles, there was no storefront to be found, the website reported. The reporter claimed he could only find an “Associate’s Entrance” to Amazon Flex Delivery Partners, its private delivery service.
Wine Searcher alleged that Amazon, which was issued a liquor license in February, violated its license in several ways, including not displaying alcoholic beverages for sale, not having alcoholic beverages available for sale, and not posting store hours.
Matthew Hydar, supervising agent for the California Department of ABC, told Wine Searcher that the article sparked the ABC’s investigation. He said if the accusations were proven, the ABC could potentially strip Amazon of its liquor license until it has established a brick-and-mortar store or fine the company. Another option would be for the case to go before an administrative law judge, although Hydar said he does not expect criminal charges against the company.
    Anheuser-Busch’s ZX Ventures Acquires Barbarian
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s growth and innovation group, ZX Ventures, has acquired Peruvian craft brewery Barbarian. Financial details were not disclosed, although ZX acquired 100% of the company’s shares, according to La Republica.
The acquisition was announced in Peru on August 13. Barbarian’s founders and collaborators will remain with the company, and ZX plans to triple Barbarian’s production by 2020, according to the outlet.
Co-founder Ignacio Schwalb said “We know that Barbarian has an incredible growth potential and that is why we have made the decision to add an important partner, which will take Barbarian to the next level,”. “This partnership opens a new world full of possibilities and will give us the opportunity to look carefully at our processes and search for optimizations in order to strengthen the growth and sustainability of the brewery.”
A-B InBev also owns Peruvian brewery Backus, which was obtained as part of the MegaBrew merger with SABMiller in 2015.
Empire Farmstead Brewery Files for Bankruptcy
New York’s Empire Farmstead Brewery and affiliate Empire Brewing Properties filed for Chapter 11 protection in the Northern District of New York’s Bankruptcy Court earlier this week, according to court records. News of the filing follows a July asset purchase agreement reached by the distressed brewing company and Wisconsin’s Burnett Dairy Cooperative for $3.25 million.
Empire, which opened in June 2016, attributed the bankruptcy filing to delays and high costs during the brewery’s construction, as well as a 2016 wild yeast infection that caused the brewery to “pull back” all bottled beer from distribution.
According to court records, the filing is to “to ensure the ongoing operations of the businesses so that they may be sold as going concerns, to market the Debtors’ assets for sale as going concerns through a competitive bidding process, and to address the Debtors’ financial difficulties for the benefit of their respective creditors.”
In 2017, Empire began working with Community Bank in an effort to sell the brewery or refinance its debt.
Wachusett Launches Fifty Trees Hard Cider Brand
Massachusetts’ Wachusett Brewing Company is further diversifying its portfolio with the addition of a new cider brand, Fifty Trees Hard Cider. According to a press release, the cider will be available in two styles: Original, a semi-dry cider blended with European Bittersweets, and Cranberry, featuring locally sourced cranberries. Fifty Trees sources its apples from orchards in North Central Massachusetts.
Wachusett president Christian McMahan said in the release “We have been making hard cider pretty consistently over the last two years,”. “We have done a ton of experimentation over that time and are proud to finally be able to launch Fifty Trees to a wider audience. ”
In addition to beer, Wachusett’s portfolio includes the Nauti hard seltzer brand.

    Beer Styles # 42 - English-Style India Pale Ale Aug 28, 2019
    Show notes

    English-Style India Pale Ale
(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/150/
Historically, English breweries exported a variety of beer styles to colonies across the British empire. But shipping ales to troops stationed in India was a particular challenge in an age when the journey took months and every cask contained wild Brettanomyces yeast. To withstand the voyage, Pale Ales were tweaked to be maltier, higher in alcohol content, and hoppier, as hops are a natural preservative. Historians believe that IPA was then watered down for the troops, while officers and the elite would savor the beer at full strength. Over time, taxation has caused the English IPA to assume a lower alcohol. The leaner the brew the less malt is required, and less is the need for a strong hop presence, which would easily put the brew out of balance. Expect earthy, floral English hop character and a malt profile defined by notes of biscuit, toast, and toffee.
    -Color – Gold to Copper
-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium malt flavor should be present
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Hop aroma and flavor is medium to high, and often flowery. Hops from a variety of origins may be used to contribute to a high hopping rate. Earthy and herbal English-variety hop character should be perceived, but may result from the skillful use of hops of other origin.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium to high
    -Body Medium
    -ABV: 4.5%-7.1%
    -Glassware: Pint Glass

    Style:
    English India Pale Ale (IPA)
    ABV:
    5.9%
Notes: Our India Pale Ale recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result is a hop lover’s dream with a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, and long hop finish.
    Commodore Perry IPA

    Style:
    English India Pale Ale (IPA)
    ABV:
    7.7%
Notes: A British-style IPA named after the man who defeated His Majesty’s Royal Navy in the War of 1812? Consider this a bold, hoppy (and mildly ironic) plunder of war. FLAVOR : Dry and well-hopped, with an arsenal of caramel malt flavors befitting the “Hero of Lake Erie.”

MillerCoors, Stone Brewing File for Summary Judgement in Trademark Case
Stone Brewing and MillerCoors have each filed for summary judgement in their ongoing trademark infringement lawsuit, according to Libation Law Blog.
In February 2018, the San Diego-based craft brewery filed a lawsuit against MillerCoors, claiming its rebranded Keystone packaging caused marketplace confusion.
In its latest brief, Stone Brewing claimed that its brand and trademark would be “destroyed” should MillerCoors succeed “in supplanting Stone’s craft beers with Keystone as ‘STONE’ in the minds of consumers.”
Meanwhile, MillerCoors called the lawsuit “a publicity stunt” by Stone and claims that it was the first to use the “Stone” and “Stones” marks.
“Stone Brewing is failing [to] keep pace in an ever more crowded craft beer segment and needed to revitalize its now-outdated image as an iconoclast,” MillerCoors’ brief said. “Stone Brewing’s market is increasingly populated by beers that are rated in official beer tastings as simply better than Stone Brewings’ ‘strong and unapologetically flavorful hops.’”
Stone Brewing’s motion for preliminary injunction to ban the sale of Keystone products prior to a court hearing was denied earlier this year.
Bell’s Brewery and Loveland Distributing Co. Headed to Richmond Circuit Court
The legal dispute between Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery and Richmond, Virginia-based wholesaler Loveland Distributing Co. is heading to Richmond Circuit Court, according to Richmond Biz Sense.
As Brewbound reported in October, when Premium Distributors of Virginia, a subsidiary of the Reyes Beverage Group, reached a deal to acquire Loveland Distributing Co., which had been selling Bell’s beer since 2015. According to reports, Bell’s had been attempting to terminate its contract with Loveland prior to the closing of the transaction due to the wholesaler not sharing crucial information regarding the deal. Bell’s ultimately ceased shipments to the state.
The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority ordered the sides to enter arbitration in May, however, the ABC reversed course in July, saying only a Virginia circuit or district court could compel arbitration.
Bell’s is appealing the order in hopes that Virginia ABC will determine it does have the authority to order arbitration, which Bells’ and Loveland’s contract calls for in the event of termination.
Guns N’ Roses, CANarchy Settle Lawsuit
Rock band Guns N’ Roses has settled its trademark infringement lawsuit against the CANarchy
Craft Brewery Collective, which sold a rosé beer called “Guns ‘N’ Rosé ale” and merchandise without the band’s permission, according to Reuters. The two sides reached a settlement agreement on July 31, and both sides are currently working on a written settlement that would dismiss the lawsuit, the outlet reported.
Cumberland Farms Files 2020 Ballot Initiative to Lift Cap on Liquor Licenses
Massachusetts-based convenience store chain Cumberland Farms this week filed a proposed 2020 ballot question to lift the cap on the number of liquor licenses a single retailer can hold. Beer and wine is currently sold in just seven of the chain’s 206 Massachusetts stores.
The question proposes a new food store beer and liquor license with no statewide cap that would be subject to local approval. Before hitting the ballot, the proposal must be certified by the attorney general’s office, garner 80,000 signatures, and be presented to the state Legislature.

    Beer Styles #41 - Classic English-Style Pale Ale Aug 21, 2019
    Show notes

    Classic English Style Pale Ale
(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/154/
The English Pale Ale can be traced back to the 19th century and the city of Burton-upon-Trent, a place with an abundance of hard water, rich in calcium sulfate. As well as enhancing a beer's hop bitterness, this hard water helps achieve clarity. English Pale Ale can fall anywhere on the color spectrum between golden and reddish amber and should generally have good head retention. A mix of fruity, hoppy, earthy, buttery, and malty aromas and flavors can be found in the sip, not unlike a classic Bitter. Traditionally all ingredients are English in origin.
    -Color – Gold to Copper
-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures
-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low to medium malt aroma and flavor is present. Low caramel character is allowable.
-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Earthy and herbal English-variety hop character should be perceived, but may result from the skillful use of hops of other origin.
    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium-low to medium-high
    -Body Medium
    -ABV: 4.4%-5.3%
    -Glassware: Pint Glass
    Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)

    Old Speckled Hen
    Greene King / Morland Brewery
    England, United Kingdom
    Style: English Pale Ale
    ABV: 5.2%
Notes: Old Speckled Hen is popular with ale drinkers up and down the country (England) and renowned for its unique character and consistent quality.
The great British ale was first brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. It was even named after the factory’s old run around car which was often parked outside the paint shop. Spattered in paint, the car became known as the “Owld Speckl’d Un”. The eagle-eyed might even see the resemblance between MG’s logo and the Old Speckled Hen label!
More than 35 years on, the great premium ale continues to be a finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich, malty taste and fruity aroma.

    Style: English Pale Ale
    ABV: 5%
Notes: DBA—a.k.a. Double Barrel Ale—is the trailblazing flagship beer that started it all for us back in 1996. Partially fermented in our patented Firestone Union oak-¬‐barrel brewing system, DBA quickly took the Central Coast by storm and set the pace for future beers to come. Today, DBA is regarded as a California classic, and stands as an iconic tribute to traditional cask-¬‐fermented English ales. Pale malts create a smooth middle with ribbons of caramel, English toffee and toasted oak.
