This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for June 25th, 2021.

We’re starting to see things move backwards. The coronavirus czar in Israel announced the indoor mask mandate will be reimposed early next week to stem the rise in cases. Yesterday was the highest daily tally in months. The country has one of the highest inoculation rates in the world, but it’s still far from the 80% figure needed to mark herd immunity.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe is “on thin ice” in its battle against COVID-19. EU leaders agreed vaccinations should be sped up to fight the delta variant. The European CDC projected the variant would account for 90% of all infections across the continent by the end of August.

As if the delta variant isn’t disturbing enough, a new mutation of that variant has emerged in India that’s being labeled “delta plus.” The variant has also been found in the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, and Turkey. The delta plus variant has three worrying characteristics that include increased transmissibility, stronger binding to receptors of lung cells, and the potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response.

San Francisco has taken a firm stand on the vaccine. All city workers will be required to be vaccinated. This policy would affect 35,000 workers and may be the first of its kind by any city or county in the U.S. Employees who refuse could be fired.

There’s nothing like a crisis to bring out the scammers and criminals. Former PTL Club evangelist Jim Bakker and his southwestern Missouri church will pay $156,000 restitution to settle a lawsuit accusing him of falsely claiming a health supplement called the Silver Solution could cure COVID-19. Bakker admits no wrongdoing. The Silver Solution has no known benefit in the body when ingested and can have serious side effects including turning skin blue.

In the United States cases were down 19%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

There are now 4,974,397 active cases in the United States.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Hutchinson, TX. Upshur, TX. Clay, NC. Hockley, TX. Titus, TX. Reeves, TX. Houston, TX. Franklin, TX. Gray, TX. And Harrison, TX.

There have been 603,149 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 66. Texas 35. Michigan 31. Illinois 22. Georgia 17. North Carolina 15. Pennsylvania 13. Virginia and Nevada 10. And Washington and Louisiana 8.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose: Vermont unchanged at 73.3%, Massachusetts at 69.7%, and Hawaii at 69.2%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi unchanged at 35.7%, Louisiana at 37.6%, and Wyoming at 38.8%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 45.4%.

The top 5 countries for vaccinations per capita are Israel, the U.K., the United States, Canada, and Germany. The bottom five are Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin, and South Sudan.

Globally, cases were down 8% and deaths down 23% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,431,693 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 72,705. India 51,248. Colombia 32,997. Argentina 24,463. And Indonesia 20,574.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for June 24th, 2021.

The New York Times reports a researcher in Seattle uncovered deleted files that show 13 partial genetic sequences for some of the earliest cases of COVID-19 in Wuhan. They don’t reveal the true origin of the virus but do firm up the idea it was circulating earlier than the outbreak at the Wuhan seafood market. About a year ago 241 genetic sequences from coronavirus patients went missing from an online database maintained by the National Institutes of Health. The researcher could find no scientific or procedural reason why the sequences were deleted.

No need to worry about getting shot number three yet. The CDC said there’s no evidence yet to suggest a booster shot is needed. They did caution that could change as the pandemic evolves. If cases go up in fully vaccinated people or if waning antibody or T cell levels are identified, that could signal a booster need.

A new study estimates life expectancy in the U.S. went down nearly two years between 2018 and 2020, mostly due to COVID-19. It’s a decrease not seen since World War II. The declines were most pronounced among minority groups. In 2018, average life expectancy was about 79 years. It’s now around 77.

If someone tells you they wouldn’t take the vaccine for a million dollars, believe them. The Ohio vaccine lottery started off with promising results, but it ended yesterday with the state still unable to crack the 50% vaccination threshold.

For some, and we’re not judging, it’s the surest sign yet the pandemic is over. The New York City Health Department released new guidelines encouraging everyone to get back out there and resume sexual activity — if you’re fully vaccinated. It also gave its okay to return to sex parties, sex with strangers, and encounters with multiple sex partners.

In the United States cases were down 25%, deaths are down 20%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 35.7%, Louisiana unchanged at 37.5%, and Wyoming at 38.7%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 45.3%.

The top 3 vaccinating countries by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Gibralter at 100%, Seychelles at 68.1%, and Malta at 65.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating countries are The Democratic Republic of Congo at 0%, and Uganda and Liberia at .01%.

Globally, cases were down 10% and deaths down 14% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,372,064 active cases around the world.

More than 150 employees at a Houston hospital system who refused the vaccine have been fired or have resigned. This after a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by an employee against the system about their vaccine requirement. The judge said any claims that the vaccines are experimental or dangerous are false.

The Inspector General at the Department of Health and Human Services reports that deaths among Medicare patients in nursing homes soared 32% last year. About 40% of Medicare recipients in nursing homes had or likely had COVID-19 in 2020. A Harvard health policy professor said, “We knew this was going to be bad, but I don't think even those of us who work in this area thought it was going to be this bad.”

Canada will start relaxing its quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated U.S. residents July 5. Those regulations have been in place for 15 months. But it’s still only for authorized travel. Nonessential travel is still prohibited even though the northern US has a partial vaccination rate over 70% — similar to Canada’s, and Canada’s vaccination program is much slower than the United States’.

Researchers in England are trying to find out if the flu shot and a Covid vaccine can be given at the same time. If so, that could save resources for healthcare providers and make things more convenient for consumers. Flu cases were basically non-existent last winter but it’s assumed with restrictions being lifted, a resurgence of flu viruses can be expected.

We’ve heard about various groups who are most reluctant to get vaccinated but one group leads the way in vaccine acceptance. Doctors. A survey by the American Medical Association shows 96% of practicing physicians have been fully vaccinated. And of the 4% who aren’t yet, only 1.8% plan on never getting the vaccine.

In the United States cases were down 21%, deaths are down 20%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for June 22nd, 2021.

The World Health Organization warned the delta variant is the fastest and strongest strain yet, one that will “pick off” the most vulnerable. And by most vulnerable, they mean the unvaccinated. It called the fact we haven’t protected front line workers a catastrophic moral failure at a global level. Delta has now spread to 92 countries.

Indonesia had its largest one-day jump in new infections yesterday. The world's fourth most populous country has seen a surge in recent weeks blamed on travel during a holiday last month. In Jakarta, 80% of hospital beds are full. So far only 12.3 million of the country’s 270 million people are fully vaccinated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the coronavirus situation in some regions of that country is getting worse. That contrasts with a statement he made this month about how Russia handled the pandemic better than many other nations. Saturday Moscow registered a record 9,120 cases. The Kremlin has denied people's distrust of authorities is a reason behind low vaccination rates.

What many of the unvaccinated around the world fear might become a reality in Manila. The President there has threatened to jail people who refuse to take the shots. He was very clear, saying, "You choose, vaccine or I will have you jailed." The target is to vaccinate 70 million people this year, and so far they’re at only 2.1 million.

But never underestimate just how serious people are about not taking the vaccine. Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley said he would literally rather retire from the sport and end his career than get a vaccine. The league has relaxed protocols for players and staff who are fully vaccinated, but for the rest there’s daily testing, mask requirements and quarantines.

In the United States cases were down 18%, deaths are down 21%, and hospitalizations are down 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since June 14.

There are now 5,034,868 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and New York.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Hutchinson, TX. Reeves, TX. Hockley, TX. Gray, TX. Dimmit, TX. Linn, MO. Stone, AR. Lamb, TX. Polk, MO. And Audrain, MO.

There have been 602,086 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 23. Texas 12. Illinois 10. Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Minnesota 9. Virginia 8. Arizona and Massachusetts 5. And New York and South Carolina 4.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose; Vermont at 73.1%, Massachusetts at 69.5%, and Hawaii at 69%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 35.4%, Louisiana at 37.5%, and Wyoming at 38.6%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 45.1%.

Globally, cases were down 13% and deaths down 15% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,415,731 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 41,878. India 39,096. Colombia 23,239. Russia 17,378. And Indonesia 14,536.

The CDC said the Delta variant now makes up at least 10% of all US cases. That’s up from 2.7% of cases on May 22, which illustrates just how fast this variant spreads. The CDC also now designated Delta as a variant of concern, meaning it may carry a risk of more severe illness and transmissibility. In the United Kingdom—it now accounts for 90% of cases.

The U.S. sent 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Taiwan yesterday. That triples an earlier pledge. The COVID-19 death toll on the island of 24 million people has jumped to 549, from only about a dozen prior to this outbreak.

While Canada is ready to loosen travel restrictions for fully vaccinated Canadians this week, the Public Safety Minister said they want to reach a vaccination rate of 75% before fully reopening the border between Canada and the U.S. for nonessential travel. That means Canada needs to nearly quadruple its vaccination rate before that border reopens.

Some emergency medicine officers overseeing Tokyo Olympic venues have a message for organizers. Don’t let spectators in. Those organizers will decide as soon as today whether to allow domestic spectators into stadiums. Foreign spectators are already banned. A recent poll shows 41% of Japanese still want the Games cancelled entirely.

In Los Angeles, the impulse is to honor front line essential workers and first responders, but also to not follow their lead when it comes to vaccinations. A report shows vaccination rates for employees at police, fire, and corrections agencies are significantly lower than other adults. There’s also talk about whether those unvaccinated first responders could actually be a threat to public health instead of rescuers.

In the United States cases were down 18%, deaths are down 21%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since June 14.

There are now 5,077,520 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and New York.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Hutchinson, TX. Reeves, TX. Hockley, TX. Gray, TX. Dimmit, TX. Linn, MO. Stone, AR. Lamb, TX. Polk, MO. And Audrain, MO.

There have been 601,826 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 23. Texas 12. Pennsylvania and Minnesota 9. Virginia 8. Arizona and Massachusetts 5. New York 4. New Jersey, Utah, Iowa, and Hawaii 2.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose was not updated by NPR. The numbers remain Vermont at 72.6%, Massachusetts at 68.7%, and Hawaii at 68.6%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 35.2%, Louisiana at 37.1%, and Alabama at 37.2%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 44.1%.

Globally, cases were down 17% and deaths down 18% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,554,471 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 53,009. Brazil 44,178. Colombia 27,818. Russia 17,611. And Indonesia 13,737.

The surge in the U.K. is picking up steam with new cases going over 10,000 for the first time in nearly four months. The chief medical adviser said the surge “will definitely translate into further hospitalizations and further deaths.”

In Africa, cases rose over 20% week-on-week in nearly two dozen countries and only 0.79% of the continent is fully vaccinated. Five countries, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia, Uganda, and Namibia, account for 76% of the new cases.

In Afghanistan, the U.S. Embassy has gone into a near-complete lockdown due to a massive spike in cases among employees. Staffers are isolating to prevent a spread that’s already killed at least one person, sent 114 into quarantine, and forced several people to be medically evacuated.

And the World Health Organization warned Indonesia needs to increase social restrictions amid a fresh surge of cases there. The country’s president has ordered authorities to speed up the vaccination campaign.

U.S. taxpayers might buy $3.2 billion worth of antiviral medicines. The White House plan, called the Antiviral Program for Pandemics, will speed clinical trials and the manufacture of promising Covid-19 treatments, with the goal of gaining FDA authorization within a year. Pretty much the things that were done in 2020.

In the United States cases were down 21%, deaths are down 20%, and hospitalizations are down 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 4.

It’s the return of travel. The European Union is recommending its member countries start lifting restrictions on tourists from the United States. The recommendation is non-binding, and different governments can require whatever tests or shots it feels are necessary to make sure tourists don’t pose a risk.

Not all vaccines work so well. German vaccine maker CureVac said interim data from late-stage testing of its coronavirus shot show comparatively low effectiveness at 47%. Not surprisingly, the company's stock value tumbled in after-hours trading. The CEO said demonstrating high efficacy in this unprecedented broad diversity of variants is challenging.

It’s one thing to be willing to get a vaccine yourself, it’s another when you’re responsible for the safety and well-being of a child. A new Harris poll shows 25% of parents do not intend to get their child vaccinated. Their reasoning is mostly that they want to wait for more data on safety and effectiveness in children.

Many college kids don’t have a choice. If they want to attend classes, they have to be vaccinated. But not in Arizona. An executive order has prohibited public universities and community colleges from mandating COVID-19 tests, vaccines, and masks for students. The Governor said taxpayers pay for public education and universities need to be available for students to return to learning.

In Moscow, they aren’t asking, they’re telling certain employees to get vaccinated. City authorities ordered all workers who interact with the public in any way to get the shot. That’s one of the most forceful steps taken anywhere in the world to compel employees to get a vaccination. The list covers more than 2 million workers in the Russian capital.

In the United States cases were down 21%, deaths are down 20%, and hospitalizations are down 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 4.

The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 topped 600,000 yesterday. That’s greater than the population of Baltimore or Milwaukee and equal to the number of Americans who died of cancer in 2019. Deaths have dropped to an average of 340 a day, with cases running at about 14,000 a day.

California is open. It was the first state to put a lockdown in place. No more state rules on social distancing or capacity limits. Masks are no longer mandated for vaccinated people in most settings, though businesses and counties can still require them. And in New York, the state is easing many of its remaining social distancing rules and shooting off fireworks. Though unvaccinated citizens must still mask up while indoors in public places.

A study of blood samples taken early last year is the latest and largest to suggest the coronavirus was in the U.S. in December 2019 — weeks before cases were first recognized by health officials. The analysis is not definitive, but the CDC says evidence is increasingly that there were rare, sporadic cases here early on, but it didn't become widespread until late February.

Time to add another name to the vaccine roundup. Results from a Phase 3 clinical trial show the Novavax vaccine demonstrated 90.4% efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19. And it showed 100% protection against moderate and severe disease. For people at high risk of complications like seniors and those with comorbidities, the vaccine was 91% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19.

Some scientists at Yale say it’s possible that all you have to do to avoid a COVID-19 infection is make sure you always have a cold. Their research found exposure to the rhinovirus that usually causes the common cold can protect against coronavirus infection. It does so by jump-starting the early-response molecules in the immune system, provided the timing is just right. But colds have been a lot lower lately because why? Social distancing and masking.

In the United States cases were down 20%, deaths are down 10%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 4.

There are now 5,157,767 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and New York.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Linn, MO. Knox, KY. Laurel, KY. Karnes, TX. Livingston, MO. DeWitt, TX. Yuba, CA. Candler, GA. And Clay, NC.

There have been 600,265 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 32. Michigan 30. Texas 28. Pennsylvania 22. California 19. Colorado 18. New York and Illinois 15. And Georgia and Washington 13.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, Vermont at 72.4%, Massachusetts at 68.6%, and Hawaii at 68.4%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi unchanged at 34.9%, and Louisiana and Alabama at 37%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 43.7%.

Globally, cases were down 25% and deaths down 12% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,732,325 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 88,992. India 62,226. Argentina 27,260. Colombia 24,452. And Russia 14,185.

There have now been 3,819,109 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

The U.S. is not going to meet its vaccination goal and a new report from Stanford and the Kaiser Family Foundation points out why. The only demographic projected to exceed a 70% vaccination rate of at least one dose by July 4 are Asians. Whites are projected to be at 66% by that date, Hispanics at 63%, and Black Americans at 51%. The pace of vaccinations would need to speed up significantly to hit the national goal, the pace is in fact slowing down.

The Delta variant has been detected in 74 countries and continues to spread rapidly on its way to becoming the dominant strain worldwide. Outbreaks have been confirmed in China, the U.S., Africa, Scandinavia, and Pacific rim countries. In the US, cases are doubling roughly every two weeks and account for 10% of all new cases, while in the UK it accounts for more than 90% of new cases.

Because of the surge in England, as expected, the next planned relaxation of restrictions will be delayed four weeks, until July 19. The Prime Minister said the new date will be the final delay as the vaccination drive is accelerated.

It’s like watching your parents having a disagreement. Dr. Marty Makary of the respected Johns Hopkins Hospital claimed the also respected CDC "sits on a lot of data.” Data that includes no child in a study of the effects of COVID-19 on youth died of COVID, and the hospitalization rate was lower for COVID than it was for influenza. He added the CDC and medical leadership fails people by "ignoring natural immunity,” remaining quiet when schools issue blanket vaccine mandates. Makary is in favor of vaccines, just not necessarily for those who are already immune.

Hopefully, we can all still agree that front line healthcare workers, first-responders and essential workers were and are heroes throughout this pandemic. And New York City is going to honor them with a ticker tape parade. It’ll be July 7 on the Canyon of Heroes parade route in downtown Manhattan.

In the United States cases were down 29%, deaths are down 23%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 4.

There are now 5,283,026 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and Florida.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Linn, MO. Lamb, TX. Karnes, TX. Gray, TX. Hutchinson, TX. Livingston, MO. Hockley, TX. St. Thomas, VI. And DeWitt, TX.

There have been 599,928 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: New York and North Carolina 27. Kansas 19. California and Colorado 12. Virginia 11. Illinois and Michigan 9. Alabama 8. And Louisiana 7.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, Vermont at 72.2%, Massachusetts at 68.5%, and Hawaii at 68.1%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi unchanged at 34.9%, Louisiana at 36.8%, and Alabama at 36.9%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 43.4%.

Globally, cases were down 24% and deaths down 4% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending flat since June 10.

There are now under 12 million active cases around the world, at 11,991,596.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 62,597. Brazil 40,865. Colombia 24,376. Argentina 21,292. And Russia 13,721.

There have now been 3,808,883 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

Coronavirus news, updates, hotspots and information for 6-14-2021 Jun 14, 2021

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for June 14th, 2021.

An eye-opening statistic from Johns Hopkins, especially for those who think the pandemic was a 2020 thing. More people worldwide have died of COVID-19 already this year than during all of last year. 1.89 million reported in 2021 compared to the 1.88 million deaths counted as of December 31, 2020. Worldwide, an average of more than 9,000 deaths from COVID are still confirmed daily.

With the Prime Minister on the verge of delaying 'Freedom Day', a new report by Public Health England shows almost a third of Covid deaths in the U.K. from the Delta strain had gotten both injections of a vaccine. The report also suggests the Delta variant has a 64% increased risk of household transmission compared to the Alpha variant and is believed to be 40% more transmissible outdoors.

They’re seeing something similar in China and Brazil. Doctors in southeastern China say the symptoms of the Delta variant are different and more dangerous than the initial virus. Patients get sicker and their conditions worsen faster. Chinese authorities did not say how many of the new infections are in people who have been vaccinated.

Moscow's mayor ordered a week off for some workplaces and imposed restrictions on many businesses to fight infections that have more than doubled in the past week. He said, “it’s impossible not to react to such a situation.” Russia was the first country to deploy a vaccine but only about 12% of the population has gotten vaccinated.

If you think unvaccinated Americans are nervous about going out, think again. A CBS News poll shows they’re more "comfortable" going to a restaurant, bar or large event than the vaccinated are. The top reason given for not taking the shot is "still too untested.”

In the United States cases were down 29%, deaths are down 23%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 4.

There are now 5,305,973 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and Florida.

There have been 599,768 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Pennsylvania and Virginia 14. Illinois 12. Texas 11. New York and Minnesota 9. Arizona 7. California 6. And New Jersey, Kentucky, Maryland, and Iowa 3.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, Vermont at 71.8%, Massachusetts at 68.2%, and Hawaii at 68%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 34.9%, Alabama at 36.4%, and Louisiana at 36.6%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 42.6%.

Globally, cases were down 28% and deaths down 11% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since May 28.

There are 12,146,101 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 68,400. Brazil 36,998. Colombia 28,519. Russia 14,723. And Argentina 13,043.
