This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for October 15th, 2021.

A major study shows infections among school-aged children in England are “high and rising.” That probably ups the intensity of the debate over kids and vaccines. The reproduction rate of those aged 17 and younger was 1.18, meaning on average every 10 infected young people are passing it on to about 12 others.

From the gee I wish we’d known this earlier department, two new international studies show the immune protection from two doses of Pfizer drops off after a mere two months. One study found the drop especially true for men, people 65 and older, and those with immunosuppression. The study also found immunity lasts longer from a vaccination if you’ve already had a natural case of COVID-19.

Penn State College of Medicine researchers found more than half of the 236 million people diagnosed with COVID-19 worldwide since December 2019 will experience post-COVID symptoms for up to six months after recovering. These include tiredness, difficulty breathing, chest pain, sore joints and loss of taste or smell. The research team said healthcare officials should get ready for all those survivors who’ll need care for psychological and physical conditions.

How do airline passengers feel about vaccine mandates to fly? Well, it’s America, so the answer is, it’s split. That’s according to the travel website Skift’s poll. 45% definitely want a mandate, 23% don’t care either way, and 33% are against it. The older the person, the more likely they are to be in favor of requiring vaccinations to fly.

With all the stories of overworked nurses with PTSD and of nurses who are getting fired or quitting because of vaccine mandates, you’d think it wouldn’t be a very alluring occupation right now. But applications to nursing schools are actually rising. Up 5.6% in 2020 according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and number are also trending up in 2021. The reasons; unprecedented career opportunities, the challenge, and many people have been inspired by healthcare workers over the past couple of years.

In the United States cases were down 22%, deaths are down 5%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

After a 19-month freeze, the United States will open its land borders with Canada and Mexico to non-essential travel. Fully vaccinated foreign nationals can enter the U.S. for whatever reason starting early November. Travelers will be asked about their vaccination status as part of the standard Customs and Border Protection admissions process, and no testing will be required to enter by land or sea.

Despite full steam ahead by the U.S. administration and other countries, the Director General of the World Health Organization called booster shots while initial inoculations lag in some countries is "immoral, unfair, and unjust.” He went on to say, "To start boosters is really the worst we can do as a global community."

A federal judge ruled the state of New York can’t impose a vaccine mandate on healthcare workers and not allow their employers to consider religious exemption requests. The judge said the vaccination requirement conflicted with the workers’ federally protected right to seek religious accommodations from their employers. The Governor vowed to fight the decision. At least 24 states have imposed vaccine requirements on workers, usually in healthcare.

Boeing told employees they have to be vaccinated and if they don’t, they might get fired. Deadline is December 8 and the company said compliance is a condition of employment. This affects about 125,000 U.S.-based employees. The International Association of Machinists union said it’s their responsibility to defend and advocate for members, but the fact is the membership is polarized on the issue.

So can you get a booster from a different vaccine than your original doses? A new NIH study found yes, it’s safe and effective. However, Moderna and Pfizer were found to spark a stronger immune system response than Johnson & Johnson. The study found those that got J&J got stronger antibody levels after getting a Moderna or Pfizer booster, compared to another J&J shot.

The British government didn’t get a very good report card from Parliament on how it handled COVID. A critical report said the country waited too long to impose a lockdown in the early days, and that missed a chance to contain the disease and led to thousands of unnecessary deaths. The delay attributed to a dangerous level of “groupthink” that caused dismissal of more aggressive strategies. The committees did praise the government’s early focus on vaccines and vaccine development.

A French study of 22.6 million people over 50 found vaccination reduces the risk of dying or being hospitalized by 90%. It also found vaccines appear to protect against the worst effects of Delta. The study’s authors said, “This means those vaccinated are nine times less at risk of being hospitalized or dying from Covid than those unvaccinated.”

Explosive accusations against Prevent Senior, which operates 10 hospitals in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Whistleblowing doctors testified the hospitals enlisted participants to test unproven drugs without proper consent and forced doctors to prescribe unproven drugs touted by Brazil’s President. Some senators say it also looks like the system falsified death certificates to omit COVID as cause of death.

The FDA declined to take a stand on whether it should back booster shots of Moderna’s vaccine, mostly because data shows two doses are still enough to protect against severe disease and death in the U.S. They also didn’t take a stand on Pfizer’s booster shots last month and rejected Pfizer’s original plan to distribute boosters to everyone 16 and older.

A national poll by NPR find the pandemic put Americans increasingly behind the economic 8-ball. More are experiencing serious financial problems, rent's overdue, evictions are looming, two-thirds of parents say their kids fell behind in school, and one in five households say someone in the home couldn’t get medical care for a serious condition. All this while billions of dollars in government relief money have gone out. 19% of U.S. households report losing all their savings during the pandemic and have no savings to fall back on. Add to that, half of households report at least one person in the home has had serious problems with depression, anxiety, stress or sleep in recent months.

In the United States cases were down 24%, deaths are down 10%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

Merck asked U.S. regulators yesterday to authorize the pill it has for treating COVID. If they hear what they want to hear from the FDA, and that could happen in a few weeks, that’d be the first pill shown to treat the illness. There are other drugs, but they require an IV or injection. Merck said earlier this month the pill cut hospitalizations and deaths by half among patients with early symptoms.

Meanwhile AstraZeneca's antibody cocktail against COVID, already shown to work as a preventative shot in the non-infected, was also shown to save lives and prevent severe disease when used as treatment within a week of first symptoms.

Two new studies indicate pregnant women who develop Covid symptoms risk emergency complications and additional problems, and the disease puts their babies at risk. Of the 100 Covid-positive moms who delivered babies between March and September of 2020 at one Texas hospital, 58% of those with symptomatic infections delivered in emergency circumstances. For those with an asymptomatic case, 46% did.

It’s a sure way to fight Covid…sue people. A parent in southern Wisconsin has sued their school district after her son got Covid-19 from a classmate. She’s upset the board removed a student mask requirement and other Covid-19 mitigation measures in May. Her son, who was wearing a mask, sat next to a kid who had symptoms and was infected regardless. The suit calls for the district to comply with CDC guidelines.

Do you habitually smoke weed? Never mind, you don’t have to tell me. But you should know a study from an arm of the National Institutes of Health says the risk of getting a coronavirus breakthrough infection in the U.S. may be 7.8% higher among those who habitually smoke weed. The risk is also there, but a little lower, for those with tobacco use disorder.

In the United States cases were down 19%, deaths are down 2%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

You might want to send Italy a congratulations. That country announced it’s reached its goal of 80% of the population over 12 being fully vaccinated. That amounts to 43 million people out of 60 million. However, a lot of people hit the streets not to celebrate, but to protest vaccine passports. Many of these gatherings turned into violent riots.

A comprehensive CBS News poll shows that most Americans are still worried about the pandemic with winter on the way, and a bit pessimistic in saying things are going to get worse in the coming months, not better. As for parents of young children, it’s split down the middle in terms of will they get their children vaccinated. Masking for kids in school does seem to have majority support. About half feel the information they hear from America’s health leaders has been confusing.

The deadline is right around the corner and at the moment, hundreds of thousands of U.S. service members are still unvaccinated. Most of those deadlines are in November and December. Different branches are delivering different levels of compliance. For instance 90% of the active-duty Navy is fully immunized while only 72% of active-duty Marines are.

The news is usually bad enough without getting it completely wrong. The New York Times issued a correction after their health and science reporter said 900,000 children have been hospitalized in the US with Covid-19. Not even a little bit close. The actual figure is a 63,000. The piece also got actions taken by regulators in Sweden and Denmark wrong. Wait, we’re not done. She also got the timing of an FDA meeting on authorizing the Pfizer vaccine for kids wrong.

Typically cautious and often a full-on buzzkill about holidays, Dr. Anthony Fauci says don’t worry about trick or treating outdoors this Halloween. While he says we shouldn’t declare premature victory and he still wants more people vaccinated who are eligible, Fauci did note that cases are dropping. Right now, there are about 95,000 new cases a day. Fauci said when it drops to less than 10,000 a day, we can start dropping restrictions like masking indoors...which will make it much easier to bob for apples.

In the United States cases were down 20%, deaths are down 14%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

With the number of those killed by COVID having surpassed 700,000, among that number is a bonus tragedy. A study shows the number of children in the U.S. who were made orphans or partial orphans by the pandemic is larger than first believed. More than 120,000 lost a primary guardian or caregiver. Black and Hispanic children have experienced this the most.

Finland joined Sweden and Denmark in halting the use of Moderna’s vaccine as a precautionary measure for men born in 1991 and later. This because of concerns about reports of possible rare cardiovascular side effects like myocarditis and pericarditis. Finland will give those young citizens the Pfizer vaccine instead.

Is the pandemic leading to diplomacy? The World Health Organization has shipped COVID-19 medical supplies into North Korea. It’s the kind of help that isolated nation rarely accepts. Those supplies are still sitting in quarantine at a seaport, but still. North Korea had severely restricted cross-border traffic and trade for the past two years despite an already crippled economy.

We told you yesterday about how police officers are among the most reluctant profession to get vaccinated. Well New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio doesn’t care. He’s considering expanding his mandates on teachers and school employees to police officers, firefighters, and correction officers. The Mayor called them the “other pieces of the puzzle.”

It’s widely considered unethical to refuse to treat someone because they smoke. But a Colorado woman is being denied a kidney transplant unless she gets vaccinated. The 56-year-old may not last long without the surgery and is quite confused that her hospital is so insistent on protecting her from COVID, that they’re willing to watch her die from her kidney condition.

As expected, Los Angeles leaders voted 11-2 to enact one of the nation’s strictest vaccine mandates. Vaccination is required for everyone entering bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms, and indoor sporting events. Everyone needs to be in compliance by November 4. About 69% of the county’s 10 million residents are fully vaccinated.

Sweden and Denmark, as a precautionary measure, stopped the use of Moderna's vaccine for people born in 1991 and later after reports of possible rare cardiovascular side effects. These include myocarditis and pericarditis, which involve inflammation of the heart or its lining.

For those who ask why we can’t rely on testing alone instead of vaccines, here’s one reason. Australian test kit maker Ellume recalled some at-home tests after learning they were reporting a higher-than-expected number of false positives. The tests went out to U.S. retailers and other distributors from April through August. About 427,000 tests are involved in the recall.

Being a police officer is dangerous. But now, not for the reasons you might think. COVID-19 is now killing more law enforcement officers than any other threat they face in the line of duty. The Fraternal Order of Police reports 716 officers have died since March 2020. And vaccine reluctance remains high among them. For instance, in Philadelphia, only 13% of police department employees have provided proof of vaccination.

Following the science is fine, but does science really say the bodies of famous celebrities contain more natural immunity to COVID-19 than the rest of us? Many performers and athletes are exempt from New York City’s vaccination mandates, and some local politicians are calling it a “double standard” that’s both “astounding” and “infuriating.” The loophole is entertainers can work unvaccinated in the city as long as they aren’t residents of the city.

Coronavirus, COVID-19, coronavirus variants, and vaccine updates for 10-06-2021 Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for October 6th, 2021.

Amid the nationwide shortage in qualified, experienced healthcare workers, we’re losing them by the thousands due to vaccine mandates. Northwell Health, the largest health care provider in New York state, fired 1,400 of them for non-compliance. In Detroit, around 400 workers left the job at Henry Ford Health System.

We’ll see if the same thing happens with teachers. The vaccine mandate for teachers and staff took effect Monday in New York City's million-plus-student public school system. Unvaccinated employees will be placed on unpaid leave and substitutes brought in to take their place. And there is no test-out option. A similar mandate goes into effect in L.A. October 15.

There’s a problem with COVID-19 tests. Demand has made the price skyrocket and made availability an issue. Much of that demand is coming from employers who’ve been made responsible for making sure their workers are COVID-free. Test makers are scaling up production, but it will take time to catch up.

Just how much worse was Delta than the original version of the coronavirus? A new study out of Canada has put a number on it. Saying Delta causes more serious disease and is associated with increased risk of death, researchers found a 108% increased risk for hospitalization, 235% increased risk for ICU admission, and 133% increased risk for death compared to the original.

It’s hard to imagine anyone making Mike Tyson do anything. But the world-famous boxer said that while he has been vaccinated, it’s not because he wanted to. He told USA TODAY, “I didn’t do it willingly. I was pretty much beaten into submission to do this because I travel internationally. And if I don’t travel, we don’t eat.”

In the United States cases were down 24%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

There are currently 9,774,391 active cases in the United States.

With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in hospitalizations per capita: North Dakota 27%, Pennsylvania 16%, Michigan and Wyoming 13%, and Montana 11%.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: McCreary, KY. Kodiak Island Borough, AK. Bethel Census Area, AK. Custer, MT. Green, KY. Morton, ND. Whitley, KY. Wadena, MN. Big Horn, WY. And Stark, ND.

There have been at least 705,116 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 69.7%, Connecticut at 69.1%, and Maine unchanged at 68.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia unchanged at 40.5%, Wyoming unchanged at 41.7%, and Idaho at 42%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 56%.

There were only 4 countries with recent 24-hour increases in the number of fully vaccinated people: Taiwan up 7%. Oceana 2%. And El Salvador and India 1%.

Globally, cases were down 20% and deaths were down 17% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since August 27.

There are currently 18,040,210 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: The United States 94,811. The U.K. 33,869. Turkey 29,802. Russia 25,110. And Brazil 20,528.

There have been at least 4,816,009 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

They had a dream, they gave it a shot, but it didn’t work out. New Zealand has admitted it will not be able to completely get rid of the coronavirus. They’ve had a zero-tolerance approach from the beginning with strict lockdowns and aggressive contact tracing. In a country of 5 million, only 27 virus deaths have been reported. But a delta outbreak has made the government realize they’re going to have to ease lockdown restrictions, even though COVID is still around.

The EU’s drug regulator gave its backing to giving booster shots of Pfizer to everyone 18 and older, saying doses “may be considered at least 6 months after the second dose.” They also support a third dose of Pfizer or Moderna for those with severely weakened immune systems at least 28 days after their second shot.

Johnson & Johnson is reportedly going to ask the FDA this week to authorize a booster of its vaccine. A meeting of the agency’s expert advisory committee will happen on the 15th to discuss the matter. Over 15 million Americans have gotten the one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The company says a second shot about two months after the first increased effectiveness to 94%.

In another head spinning reversal, the CDC quickly removed the guidance for holiday safety that they put out a couple of days prior, saying it was old information posted in error. That explains a lot as the guidance was as severe and restrictive as for the holidays of 2020. The organization said it will be sharing updated guidance soon.

Is the pandemic pushing the world into the automation revolution? Last year’s grape harvest in Italy was so bad for Mirko Cappelli’s Tuscan vineyard because he couldn’t get workers that this year, he spent $98,000 on a grape-picking robot. And he’s not alone. Vintners have been slow to adopt automation because of worry it might damage the grapes. Some European regions even ban machine harvesting. But the tide seems to be shifting out of necessity, despite a few sour grapes.

In the United States cases were down 24%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13.

There are 9,802,566 active cases in the United States.

With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in hospitalizations per capita: North Dakota 26%, Pennsylvania 17%, and Michigan, Montana, and Wyoming 13%.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Kodiak Island Borough, AK. DeWitt, TX. Bethel Census Area, AK. Custer, MT. McCreary, KY. Green, KY. Morton, ND. Big Horn, WY. Stark, ND. And Wadena, MN.

There have been at least 703,278 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 69.6%, Connecticut at 69%, and Maine at 68.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia at 40.5%, Wyoming at 41.7%, and Idaho at 41.9%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 55.9%.

The 5 countries with the largest recent 24-hour increase in the number of fully vaccinated people: There were only three with increases. Panama, South America, and Oceana all up 2%.

Globally, cases were down 19% and deaths were down 15% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since August 27.

There are 18,115,500 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: The United States 72,947. The U.K. 35,077. Turkey 28,810. Russia 25,781. And India 16,762.

More pressure on vaccinated citizens in Israel to go ahead and get their booster shot. Only those who do will be eligible for the "green pass" needed to get into restaurants, gyms, and other venues. They started giving boosters to everyone 12 and up at the end of August. For some unexplained reason, places like museums and libraries are exempt from the green pass requirement.

Still a rough go of it in Russia. That country yesterday reported a record daily death toll from COVID for the fifth time in a week. 890 more deaths and the number of new infections in the past day was the second highest of the year. Overall, Russia has Europe's highest death toll, nearly 210,000 people.

Happy holidays from your friends at the CDC. They issued new guidelines for how you should decrease the risk of infection or transmission during the upcoming holiday season. They suggest outdoor or virtual celebrations only, staying 6 feet away from each other, wearing a mask at all times if unvaccinated, putting fans in open windows to keep air circulating, and no traveling unless fully vaccinated and masked on public transportation. Kinda makes you feel all warm inside.

Another story about just how determined anti-vaxxers are to avoid vaccines at all costs. A woman recounted on Twitter how her 52-year-old unvaccinated husband wound up in ICU with a ventilator and ECMO from severe COVID. He needed a blood transfusion, but she wouldn’t allow it for fear he’d get vaccinated blood. Well, he died, but she says it wasn’t because he was unvaccinated.

It’s hard to believe since many of us are surrounded by them every day, but COVID has created a clown shortage. It’s particularly bad in Northern Ireland because many circus clowns went back to their home countries after the initial lockdown. Others found work in countries with more relaxed restrictions. Big recruiting drives for new clowns are underway but applicants have big shoes to fill. I said they have big shoes to fill.

The number of deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related has crossed over 700,000, at at least 701,169.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 69.5%, Connecticut at 68.7%, and Maine unchanged at 68.5%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia still unchanged at 40.4%, and Wyoming and Idaho at 41.6%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 55.6%.

The 5 countries with the largest recent 24-hour increase in the number of fully vaccinated people: South Korea up 2%. And Finland, Argentina, Australia, and Azerbaijan 1%.
