On Side A, Filler takes us back to his college days in NYC where he was obsessed with Mike Patton of bands such as Faith No More & Mr. Bungle, to name a few. Filler focuses on one of Mike Patton’s band Loveage and their cover of “Sex, I’m a Man” originally recorded by Berlin for the ultimate 80s film “Top Gun.” You ready for a little classroom lesson conducted by Professor Bone? I sure am….Sharpen your pencils, boys and girls. On Side B, It is our pleasure to talk about The Kinks & Van Halen and their distinctly different versions of “You Really Got Me.” In our last episode, we talked about Dick Dale - the legendary King of the Surf Guitar. And so, it seems fitting that we continue on our guitar god trajectory by delving into the fascinating world of Eddie Van Halen who is considered by pretty much everyone on the planet to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

    Episode 15: Tribal Musings Apr 30, 2018
    Show notes

On Side A, we have the pleasure of heading into the pipeline as we discover the legendary King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. He pioneered the surf music style and with the "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique" and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The Boston-born guitar icon released "Misirlou" – a Mediterranean folk tune in 1962 and it was a track he claimed to have recorded 95 times in an effort to reduce the oceans of reverb that ultimately defined surf rock. Filler will take us down his pipeline dream as we chat about the original recording of Misirlou which dates as far back as 1927! And as we make our way over to Side B, it becomes quite clear that Filler & I are gonna need a bigger boat…we have some special late night visitors to our porch. Our long time pal, Vignone, stops by to school us on A Tribe Called Quest. Vignone grew up around the block from Filler and me and was no stranger to late nights on the porch and early mornings recovering in the ocean. We have a lot of fun chatting about Tribe - in particular their album People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rythym. Special thanks to Kitty, Jackie, Ryan, & Bassman for keeping us company on the porch for this episode.

    Episode 12: Lyrically Limber Mar 20, 2018
    Show notes

On Side A we talk about one of the greatest unrequited love songs of all time, Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits. The song has been covered by numerous artists such as The Indigo Girls & The Killers, to name a few. Contrary to popular belief, the song has little to do with the Capulets & Montagues and more to do with a fling between two rock n roll cats. And when you’re ready to flip on over to Side: It seems that all roads lead to Jack White. And the road we took to get to Elvis Costello’s cover of “I Just Don’t Know What to do With Myself” not only lead us to Jack White but also to Dusty Springfield and Burt Bacharach. Sprinkle a little Sofia Coppola music video magic on top, and we’ve got ourselves a fine Side B.

Episode 11: Cloak Full of Eagles Mar 05, 2018
    Show notes

Episode 11 features a Side A and a Side B with lots in common. Although their sounds are quite different, both featured artists were child prodigies from England. On Side A, we dive into singer-songwriter, Steve Winwood, and his 1986 song “’Higher Love” which was brilliantly covered by James Vincent McMorrow in 2011. On Side B, we keep things interesting with some dudes that are truly the epitome of cool. We chat about T. Rex and their 1972 hit Telegram Sam which was covered by the legendary goth band, Bauhaus, in 1980.

On Side A we have Nancy Sinatra, we have Lee Hazlewood, and we have Cher. Folks, that’s a lot of Banging and a lot of Boots. We find the inspiration that led to Nancy Sinatra’s cover of Sonny Bono’s “Bang Bang" and we chat about her amazing cover of Lee Hazlewood's "These Boots Were Made For Walking." On Side B we take you to Aretha Franklin via Otis Redding via Jake & Ellwood Blues. Amanda takes us on a stroll down memory lane of riding shotgun with her dad in his 1980 Ford Granada listening to the oldies station and learning about music and comedy and how The Blues Brothers introduced her to the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 9: Danger in the Rabbit Hole Feb 20, 2018
    Show notes

On Side A: We find some common threads that led to the rise in fame and success of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Ike & Tina Revue. Each group had breakout hits by performing cover songs. That’s right, folks. Cover Songs. Susie Q was a song written by Dale Hawkins in 1957. In 1968, Creedence decided to cover the song for their debut album. The song went on to be one of their biggest hits and earned them plenty of air time on the radio. Similarly, when Ike & Tina first entered the scene, they made quite a splash with their barnstorming cover of Creedence’s “Proud Mary.” There’s a great deal of debate about which version is the better version and we look forward to having you join us for our banter. On Side B of our episode we dive into R&B geniuses, The Isley Brother’s, and their excellent 1973 cover of the song, “Summer Breeze.” The song was originally recorded in 1972 by Seals & Croft and covered by several artists including the pristine and tight sounds of The Main Ingredient for their 1974 album, Euphrates River. We hope we don’t disappoint.
