    On today’s episode of ‘Conversations On Dance’ we are joined by choreographer Jodi Melnick. (Listen to our most recent conversation with Jodi in episode 300). Jodi has been featured on the podcast several times to explore the range of her experiences as both choreographer and dancer, but today we focus specifically on how Jodi defines and explores the collaborative process.     (312) Michele Byrd-McPhee, founder of Ladies of Hip-Hop Oct 28, 2022

    Today we are joined by Michele Byrd-McPhee, founder of Ladies of Hip-Hop. Ladies of Hip-Hop Dance Collective is an all female intergenerational dance collective that creates dance works illuminating the strength, power and diversity of women in Hip-Hop. Michele founded the company in 2004 and continues to lead the organization.

    On November 3rd, join Ladies of Hip-Hop for “The Black Dancing Bodies Project” in the Clark Studio Theater in Lincoln Center as part of Works & Process at Lincoln Center. An ongoing performance and documentary effort to represent Black women in street and club dance culture, this session highlights the choreopoem. Led by Michele, new writing, poetry by Ursula Rucker, and music and dance of street, club and African culture come together in this show-and-tell, culminating the Ladies of Hip-Hop’s Works & Process LaunchPAD residency at the Catskill Mountain Foundation.     (311) Stefanie Batten Bland, Founder of Company SBB, on ‘Embarqued: Stories of Soil’ at BAM Oct 24, 2022

    Today we are joined by global artist, Stefanie Batten Bland, founder of Company SBB. Child of a jazz composer/producer father and writer mother, and raised in Soho, Stefanie was clearly destined for a future in the arts. She situates her work at the intersection of dance-theatre, film, and installation, with a focus on the interrogation of contemporary and historical culture. This November 1-5, Stefanie’s ‘Embarqued: Stories of Soil’ takes the stage at BAM. This new dance-theater work is an excavation of self and country, created in textiles, skin tones, labor, land, humor, and moving bodies.

    Stefanie talks with us about how she got her start in the arts, founding Company SBB, her creative process, and the impetus for ‘Embarqued.’ Tickets for ‘Embarqued’ are available at https://www.bam.org/embarqued.

    (308) Yaron Lifschitz, Artistic Director and CEO of ‘Circa,’ coming to Stanford Live Sep 26, 2022

    Today we are joined by Yaron Lifschitz, Artistic Director and CEO of ‘Circa.’ Yaron is a graduate of the University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, and National Institute of Dramatic Arts, where he was the youngest director ever accepted into its prestigious graduate director’s course. Since graduating, Yaron has directed over 60 productions including large-scale events, opera, theatre, physical theatre, and circus. His work has been seen in more than 40 countries and across six continents by over 1.5 million people.

    Yaron tells us about how he came to the circus, what he looks for in artists, and how he created a new work called ‘Leviathan,’ co-commissioned by Stanford Live. Arthur’s choreography has been featured across a broad spectrum of art forms including opera, ballet, film, and musical theatre, never shying away from artistic risks like tackling Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’ or creating to the music of Bjork. Today we talk to Arthur about his surprising early inspirations, finding his own choreographic voice and how his new work for Houston Ballet finally found its way to the stage after navigating its way through the pandemic.
