    Connected Parenting

Connected Parenting shares techniques that therapists use to help parents soothe their child as well as enhance the parent-child bond and is based on the understanding that correcting and guiding behavior works best when it is preceded by and linked to empathy. At the heart of this parenting model is the CALM Technique which helps parents accurately attune to children’s affect and experience. These empathic interactions release reward chemicals in the brain that stimulate positive emotions and increase order and balance in the nervous system. Reward chemicals, including natural opiates, endorphins, and a powerful hormone called oxytocin, reduce and inhibit stress hormones and bathe the brain in positive emotions that ripple through every cell in the body. The benefits of empathy and compassion have a strong base in science that cannot be underestimated. Simply put, it is brain food, the emotional nutrition all of us need, perhaps our children most of all.
Although many parenting techniques stress the importance of empathy, Connected Parenting will show you how to use it skillfully to repair frayed bonds, deescalate tantrums, contain and correct difficult behaviors and help your child to become more confident and emotionally resilient. We use a collaborative and supportive coaching model and provide inspirational, easy-to-understand techniques grounded in neuroscience and attachment. In the end, your child will be more compliant, more relaxed, and – most importantly – happier. Connected Parenting will bring out the best in you and your child.

CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 82 – Financial Literacy Aug 03, 2022
    Show notes

When it comes to money children are very literal. So if we say something like; "We can't do that because we don't have enough money" they think, oh my goodness we don't have enough money. This line of thinking starts them on a money path of scarcity. A belief that there is never enough to go around. It is a belief that carries on into adulthood and quickly becomes a story that we have to try and correct later on down the road. Money can be challenging and triggering for many of us and the beliefs we carry throughout life about financial literacy start in our childhood years. Which is why how we talk about money is really important, because it is these words, statements and beliefs that we're constantly teaching our children with all the time. If you are looking for some direction, insight and help into how to approach money when it comes to family finances and teaching our kids about it, then join me today for a discussion on financial literacy. CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 81 – Must Do’s & Can Do’s Jul 27, 2022
    Show notes

When it comes to living in a household with members of your family there are always what I like to call the "Must Do's and Can Do's" of life. These include all the things that a family does both together and or separately. The can do's include chosen activities and commitments. Is it something I really want to do? Whereas the must do's are the things that we all take part in as a set rule of each day, week or month. They aren't all terrible things as the name suggests such as household chores though. Although they are on this list it also includes things like taking the dog for a walk, and family game or movie night. Join me this week as I talk about what each list is and share some suggestions for how best to ensure that everyone is aware of what is going on and expected each month. What is included on your family's can do's and must dos's lists? CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 80 – Stop Interviewing For Pain Jul 20, 2022
    Show notes

Sometimes we worry so much about our children, about how they're doing personally and socially that we come at them from this place of fear for the level of pain they may be in. What we don't realize is that our fear based approach is often activating the very things that concern us and end up taking them into that space where they were previously doing okay. So how do we as parents regulate our approach to checking in, keep it supportive, be the helpful guide and not so interview for pain? Join me for this week's release where I will be discussing and sharing my thoughts on this topic as well as my tips and insights for what we can do to support our kids and stop interviewing for pain. CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 79 – Summer 2022 Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

I feel like summer is the best time to be a connected parent because it's the time where you are less busy. Usually, there's more vacations, or at least some of the major things that kids are doing during the year have slowed down or stopped and there’s time to connect and regroup. Overall it's a time to really slow down, enjoy life and each other. For this reason I like to make summer all about mirroring and connections and in today’s episode I want to do a quick kind of review and recap of the two. So this is actually probably the biggest childhood transition that there is. It's a really interesting transition because once kids get to high school, it's something that's very present in their mind. Moving onto the next stage is talked about a lot with parents and teachers. Talks around what marks are needed to get into college and what requirements need to be fulfilled. There's this big thing that's sort of built up and talked about for years and as it gets closer and closer, the anxiety around that really starts to peak. As a result there's a few different phases that kids go through as they get closer and closer to their first day of college and ways you can support them as they work their way through this array of emotions. CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 77 – Help! My Kid is a Sore Loser Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

Picture this; you're playing a board game, everything's going fine when all of a sudden your child pulls the wrong card or their sibling does well in the game and the tides turn. Your once happy, family fun night has now become loud, angry, and out of control. You hear; "This game is cheap, I hate this game!" and then sometimes things go even further; the board gets flipped and they stomp away really mad and upset. Losing is a pretty intense feeling and for some kids their feelings are bigger than they can maintain and hold into their little bodies. As a parent watching this, we sort of see their life flash before our eyes, and think; "who's going to want to play with him or her, they are such a terrible sport? But before we write their life journey off as impossible one of the things to keep in mind here is these moments are usually a far more intense display at home where a child is comfortable to let loose and there are a few things that you can do to help them learn how to manage their feelings. This week I want to talk about your kids being a sore loser and what can be done in those high intense moments where everything feels so out of control. CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 75 – Best Friend Breakups Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

Today I want to talk about what to do when our child's best friend moves, or goes to another school. Or worse yet, when there is a friendship breakup. This is a really hard situation to process because as parents we want to step in and keep our children from feeling heartbreak. But one of the things to remember is all of these things that happen, specifically when it comes to changes and transitions with friendships are really important for our child because it is how they're practicing to be adults. And if they don't have a substantial number of experiences with healthy adversity, when they're little, they're not going to have the experience, the perspective, or the understanding to be able to deal with big things that happen later on in life. As their parents we have to walk this very delicate balance of supporting them and helping them with their friendships while also not smoothing things out so much that they don't ever feel any sadness or pain. Join me today for some tips on how to navigate this sometimes heartbreaking path without taking over completely. CONNECTED PARENTING EPISODE 74 – Why Won’t You Just Go To Sleep? Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

What's really happening when kids don't want to get into bed at bedtime? Are they just being difficult; intent on ruining our night, time and time again? The truth is that for many kids, especially gladiator kids, bedtime is usually a time where they lie in bed and think about all the things they did that day that weren't so great. All the things they said that might have hurt your feelings or where they were mean to mom or grandma. Or someone else was mean to them and they overreacted. The world gets silent at bedtime, leaving room for all of those thoughts to come flooding in and it can get very overwhelming. Your child may have a difficult time regulating and they don't want to be lying in that bed, thinking about all those terrible things all by themselves. So they would rather delay and walk like a turtle down the hall or fight and argue with you instead. If you are ready to have a more settled bedtime routine that doesn’t leave you wanting to tear your hair out and scream into a pillow then this episode is for you. Join me and together let’s bring the peace back to the end of the day.
