Ep420: Big'n (Bill Akins, Todd Johnson, Brian Wnukoswki, Fred Popolo) Feb 25, 2025
    Show notes

The mighty men of Big'n! At last. End Comes Too Soon is the new record and it rips. A song by song with all of that, as well as brief forays unto Ground Rule Double, Discipline, Knife of Sin, Oxes split and so much more. It is a rare glimpse into the Chicago legends history, including the path of Fred Popolo from fan to bass player. What XMSN means, recording the new stuff... All that and so much more.

    Ep419: Mike Baggetta (mssv) Feb 23, 2025
    Show notes

Mike Baggetta is back! His band mssv with Mike Watt and Stephen Hodges have a brand new record called On and On. It is very good and they road tested the song in a unique way, playing them out on the tour for the previous record. We hear all about that, as well as how Mike keeps track of demos and a rundown of the record song by song by Mr. Baggetta, the nature of creativity and collaboration, why Duane Denison is so awesome and so much more!

Ep418: Mike Hard (God Bullies, Thrall, Pig Harvest) Feb 14, 2025
    Show notes

As Above So Below is the latest God Bullies record, recorded in honor of departed God Bullies guitarist David Livingstone and Johnnie Johnston at Electrical Audio. The reformed God Bullies are playing shows everywhere. Mike Hard clears the air about who owes the name, the intent with the band being called what it is and gives an in-depth song by song breakdown of the new record.

Ep417: Brian Case (FACS, Disappears, 90 Day Men) Feb 03, 2025
    Show notes

FACS are back with a brand new record called Wish Defense. The last record Steve Albini (RIP) recorded, later finished by Sanford Parker and mixed by John Congleton. It's a little more austere and spare, but definitely FACS. It also features Johnathan Van Herik rejoining... who was in the original band. We do a song by song of that record, as well as discussion of all things 90 Day Men, including the Numero reissue and reunion. Disappears to FACS, Steve Shelley and so very much more.

Ep416: Russell White and Michelle Gasparovic (The Camera Obscura) Jan 27, 2025
    Show notes

This is an episode with two of the folks from the 1998 post-punk shoegazey band from San Diego! To Change the Shape of an Envelope is a well regarded record and Solid Brass has given it a wonderful 25 year anniversary release complete with new artwork by Sonny Kay. So how better to celebrate than to speak to Michelle (keyboards) and singer/frontman/loose cannon Russell White about old records, old times, and lots, lots more. It's a loose and hilarious episode with two folks from a great band!

Ep415: Jim Kimball (Ghost Forest, Laughing Hyenas, DK3, Mule, Jesus Lizard) Jan 16, 2025
    Show notes

That's right! It's the fantastic post-punk, punk rock, rock drummer who has played in MULTIPLE legendary bands. His newest band is the massively underrated Ghost Forest, who have a new-ish record. But you may know him from the amazing Laughing Hyenas, Mule, Denison-Kimball Trio and (for awhile.) The Jesus Lizard. Let's hear about all those bands as well as doing things with J.G. Thirlwell, Ed Roessler and the all the rest of it with a life full of fantastic rock.

Ep413: Erik Denno and Darren Zentek (Kerosene 454) Jan 07, 2025
    Show notes

The legendary Maryland/DC band has a reissue of their classic record Came by to Kill Me on Solid Brass. The first record to be written exclusively with Darren, who would later play in Office of Future Plans, Channels, Continuals and J. Robbins Band as well. A powerful live band that practiced 5 or 6 times a week and toured relentlessly, we get a rare window into a beloved band that existed in a time before the internet as we know it exists. Came by to Kill Me, recorded by J. Robbins is a great document of a the band, and is the first time it is available digitally. It's a song by song breakdown for a ripper band that were contemporaries with many Dischord faves.

Ep412: Jamie Stillman (Harriet the Spy, Earthquaker Devices, the Party of Helicopters) Dec 26, 2024
    Show notes

Harriet the Spy has a wonderful reissue of Unfuckwithable, through Solid Brass. Jamie played the drums in that band, but is better known to most as the Impressario behind Earthquaker Devices. As well as the Party of Helicopters, Relaxer, etc. There is much talk of touring, revisiting older material, Ohio, rocking while aging, and all that. As well as, yes... quite a bit of gear talk. Yes, yes... hard to believe.

Ep411: Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Brant Bjork Trio, Fu Manchu, Stöner) Dec 20, 2024
    Show notes

That's right, the desert rock legend himself has a new record with Brant Bjork Trio - Once Upon a Time in the Desert. In an all star band featuring Ryan Gut and Mario Lalli! So how about a floor up discussion, all the way from getting into punk rock, pots and pans, into present day. With stops along the formative early days, into Sons of Kyuss (and later Kyuss) and after. Solo records, bands, Stöner and lots more. A track by track breakthrough of Once Upon a Time in the Desert? You better believe it. This band is hitting the road hard, let's hear all about it.

Ep410: Alexander Hacke & Danielle De Picciotto (hackedepicciotto) Dec 16, 2024
    Show notes

It has been a long time since the Berlin based experimental duo has been on protonic reversal. There's a BEST OF the band (live in Napoli!), which also serves as a great introduction as well as other newish records. The whiplash of touring with Alexander's band Einstürzende Neubauten and then immediately doing hackedepicciotto. Soundtracks, At the Mountains of Madness, nomad life, musical discovery, touring on a budget and sometimes by train... and how not to not be completely annoyed by your musical and life partner that you are surrounded by almost the entire time.
