Today: Armand Gabriel took a solemn vow to defend the United States during World War II. He found his way to do so behind a podium with a baton in his hand. With beauty and conviction he led some of the nation’s most accomplished musicians in their mission to bring dignity, beauty and passion to the Airmen and Citizens they represented. It also led to the admiration and friendship of musicians of later generations.
The Wheaton Municipal Band is one of the nation’s most celebrated civic music institutions and partnered with the retired Colonel for decades. They had an unusual proposal that Colonel Gabriel took to heart and it led to a very unique and binding contract. Not because of a piece of paper but the man who stood behind it…
