Today’s tale of a mystical merman draws inspiration from a fascinating article in The American Weekly Mercury out of Philadelphia, published on September 6, 1739. Their partnership seems destined for trouble, but everything changes when they pull something extraordinary from the ocean—a merman. What follows is a mystical twist of fate, where greed, honor, and the supernatural collide, and every man gets exactly what he deserves.

123: More Voices from the Road- The Hemings of Monticello Apr 17, 2025

Show notes

On this episode of Common Mystics the sisters dive into one of America's most controversial icons: Thomas Jefferson. Celebrated as the author of the Declaration of Independence and the nation's third President, Jefferson's legacy isn't without its darker chapters. Rumors of an illicit relationship with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman at his Monticello plantation, have swirled for centuries. While the media once romanticized their connection, historians largely dismissed the claims of Hemings' descendants—until the 1990s. That’s when DNA testing shattered the narrative, uncovering a far more complicated and troubling story about Jefferson, the Hemings family, and the enslaved women whose children he fathered. Don’t miss this fascinating exploration of history’s untold truths.
