Ep 99 Community Spotlight:
1. 602.5a (Read main rule first, 602.5)
Commander Rules!
1. Define: Saltiness
2. Let’s be honest: Everyone gets Salty sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to avoid. But maybe by investigating the way we feel, we can get salty less often, and perhaps handle the times when we do get salty, a little better?
  1. Saltiness might be different for different people
3. What makes Ryan and Zack Salty?
4. If you think about, with a base 25% chance to win a game, cards that are making you lose the game, shouldn’t produce as much salt as they do
  1. Remind ourselves that we are playing a GAME and that it’s supposed to be fun!
  2. Take a moment to think about your mood. Is there something going on in your life that is making you more prone to getting salty? Maybe now is not the time to get into a competitive situation
  3. Run more answers
  4. Not take things personally.
  5. Realize if someone is acting different than they normally do, and if so, some of your normal behaviors might be perceived differently, so dial it back a bit?
  6. Have the talk to prevent saltiness
    1. Ryan - Often times I like to play a mono-red (or more of my just-for-fun decks). I go into the game not planning to win. I still play to win, but I don’t have the expectation of winning, so I usually don’t get salty
  7. Focus on having fun as much as winning
5. What can we do about getting Salty? Are we getting salty more often than we should?
  1. Do you win more than 25% of the games?
  2. Do you often times find people groaning when you play specific cards?
  3. Are people not wanting to play with you?
  4. Are you a sore winner or loser?
6. We like to turn the focus inwards, so we want to ask “Do we sometimes behave in a way that could contribute to other’s Salinity levels?
  1. Disclaimer: We don’t play against much MLD in our meta, so none of that made our lists
    1. https://edhrec.com/top/salt

7. Ryan and Zack’s Top 8 Cards that make them want to be salty.
8. Summary. This is a great game, with an amazing community, let’s all try to make it a little better, and get Salty less often, and try to be more understanding when people we play with get Salty.

Drafting for fun and profit - Ep 98 May 21, 2019

Show notes

Thanks
1. Mike Condon for the music and editing
1. @Marshall_LR, @lsv - 6:42, 21:34, 33:23
2. @ChannelFireball - 21:34,33:23
3. @karsten_frank - 21:34
4. @MothershipGames - 33:19
5. @MTG_Arena - 58:32
Ep 98 Community Spotlight:
1. Talk about Big Jon winning, narrowly
League Update:
1. Explain what draft is
  1. Get 3 sealed boosters booster
  2. Pack 1, Open pack, select a card, pass the remaining cards to your left
  3. Pack 2 same, but pass to the right
  4. Pack 3, same, pass to the left again
2. Crack-a-pack
  1. It’s a great way to get new cards (Value!)
  2. It’s a way to get entertainment value out of opening booster packs
    1. It’s hard to keep in mind all of the cards you have drafted so far
    2. Have to keep in mind curve considerations
    3. Have to remember which color cards you have already drafted
    4. Figuring out which colors/color pairs are open
    5. You can actually feel pretty mentally drained after doing an entire draft
  3. Drafting feels very skill intensive
    1. Go into detail here, about puzzle solving
    2. How this is similar to Commander (No two games are the same)
  4. Novel gameplay situations happen
3. Explain why we like draft
  1. Mention that in the past, you would draft more than 1 set at a time
    1. Morph! (Even 3 color morphs)
    2. Outlast
    3. Good Mana fixing (oh the joy of opening a fetch land!)
    4. Really powerful cards (because they were 3 color)
    5. Prowess
  2. Triple Khans of Tarkir
    1. Easily forced u/b or b/w
    2. Ingest mill
    3. Awaken - lands into creatures
  3. Triple Battle for Zendikar
    1. Investigate (Clues!)
      1. Ulvenwald Mysteries (2G - Enchantment when a non-token creature dies, investigate, when you sac a clue, make a 1/1 human token)
    2. Madness
    3. Flip cards (Werewolves)
    4. Delirium (And self mill to go along with it)
  4. Shadows Over Innistrad
    1. Was so awesome because it encouraged bluffing, and made for this excellent tension. Example:
      1. Tap: Sparksmith deals X damage to target creature and X damage to you, where X is the number of Goblins on the battlefield.
    2. Sparksmith - 1R - 1/1
    3. Battering Craghorn - Morph: 1RR - 3/1 First Strike
      1. Whenever Skirk Commando deals combat damage to a player, you may have it deal 2 damage to target creature that player controls.
    4. Skirk Commando - Morph: 2R - 2/1
  5. Onslaught
4. Favorite draft formats of the past
  1. Ryan is definitely guilty of this some, and it feels kinda good when you are able to “Get Away with it” and still win the draft (Free value)
  2. Zack does it...
5. How do we feel about rare drafting?
  1. In General
    1. Drafted at Mothership on Wednesday
      1. War of the Spark draft is really Fun!

        U/B

Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage was really good

Bond of Insight (3U sorc, each player mills 4, return up to 2 instant/sorcery)

        Angrath

        Blast Zone

Opponent cast Honor the God-Pharaoh (2R, sorc, discard a card, draw two cards. Amass 1)
      2. Ryan drafted this:

        Fblthp Story Narset’s reversal

        Neoform

        Ashiok’s Skulker

        Kiora

        Mowu + teferi’s time twist
      3. Zack drafted this:
  2. In Person
    1. MTGA is really great.
    2. It’s super convenient
    3. You don’t have to dedicate a full night, all at once
    4. Drafting against bots feels kinda bad, but it does tie in to that convenience factor
  3. Online
6. Drafting online vs in person
7. Summary: Drafting is super fun! And, if you have a local game store, and have never tried it, you totally should!

    2. Ryan playing Alden’s Edgar Markov deck
    3. Ben playing Jodah

  4. Game 3
3. We played 3 games
LGS Fun!
1. A lot of new players have trouble knowing how to make their decks better.
  1. How often are you playing the deck?
  2. How often do you find yourself with dead cards in hand?
2. How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your decks?
  1. Decide if you’re completely scrapping the deck, or just adding a few cards
  2. Is there a new Commander that you want to helm the deck? That’s closer to an overhaul
3. Decide what your Goal is going to be: entire deck overhaul vs. small upgrade
  1. Maybe you save up for big upgrade, but there are plenty of good cards that are cheap AND good!
  2. Trade in old cards that you may not want anymore. A lot of stores give you a bonus if you take store credit over cash.
4. Updating your deck doesn’t have to cost a TON of money.
  1. Give the deck several plays with the new cards before you decide if you like them or not.
  2. Ask playgroup if you can start a game with a couple of new cards in your opening hand.
  3. Ryan - I keep the last 20 or so cards originally cut from the deck, WITH the deck, so that I can always try out something new, when I find something that isn’t working.
5. Play it
  1. Focus on where you deck is weak. Do this by asking yourself some questions
  2. 1. What decks have been problematic / have I been losing to?
    2. 1. How have those decks been winning?
      1. Mana troubles?
      2. Never having enough cards in hand?
      3. Losing to problematic Artifacts/Enchantments?
    3. How has my deck been losing?
    4. Do you often find yourself with a bunch of high casting cost cards in your hand. Maybe it’s time to lower your curve
    5. Are there times when your deck isn’t doing what it’s supposed to - why is that?
    1. If built with slot theory and deck is doing okay - swap slot for slot (Ie. Removal for Removal)
    2. If you switch cards 1 for 1 from slots write down what you swapped and when you draw new card think if you’d rather have new card or old card.
    3. If you’re getting decimated - reevaluate which slots you have, and how many cards you assign to each slot type
  3. Slot Theory
  4. When a new set comes out if you see a card you like add a note in your phone.
    1. EDHRec new cards feature
    2. YouTube Videos
    3. Podcasts
    4. Scryfall - look for similar cards
    5. Lastly...your friends! - Consult friends and playgroup for advice. All of us Magic players LOVE talking about Magic
  5. What are some resources for inspiration on upgrading your deck.
    1. Counter magic heavy?
    2. Combo heavy?
    3. Infect?
    4. Token based decks
  6. Consider your meta
6. How can you maximize upgrading your deck?
  1. Changing the way your deck functions by removing too many cards that make your deck an deck (tokens, discard, control,
  2. Sometimes upgrading a deck turns into me brewing a new deck.
7. Potential Pitfalls
  1. I consider this one of the first successful EDH decks I’ve ever built
  2. 1. It was originally a budget brew for Season Two of the EDH League.
    2. I’ve put a few new cards into the deck, but I’m starting to see cards that feel not great when I draw them.
    1. Lands - 38
    2. Creatures - 23
    3. Instants - 9
    4. Sorceries - 9
    5. Enchantments - 10
    6. Artifacts - 11
  3. Deck Stats
    1. Exquisite Blood
    2. Ethereal Absolution
    3. Approach of the Second Sun
    4. Hour of Revelation
    5. Kaya's Wrath (We’ll talk about why this is not so great)
    6. Fumigate
  4. Cards I want to add
8. Upgrading Zack’s Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim

1. Played with PJ and Lin.
2. 1. PJ’s channel on YouTube is “Commander Replay” - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrudMyVbtvyVyadYddhousA
3. Actually won a game with MR. OPC Grenzo.
4. Was a really fun moment when I thought I was going to win with Yuriko, by flipping Draco off the top of my library, and PJ unequipped Sunforger to get Teferi’s Protection, and Lin also cast Teferi’s Protection. Man that card is good!
Games at our LGS

    4. What are some awesome Reprints that could be included in MH, that we each want to see?
    5. Would be really cool to see some sweet new legendary creatures in Modern Horizons
  1. HYPE! This set is SO CRAZY!!!!!
  2. 1. Planeswalkers are one of the coolest card types in the game!
  3. Teaser video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn_0ZjpjntE
    1. Link to a reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/ayufiu/all_36_war_planeswalkers_in_one_image_with_names/
    2. Notable PW NOT making an appearance:
  4. Stained glass article here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/closer-look-stained-glass-planeswalkers-2019-03-08
    1. People have been speculating Planeswalkers will universally be allowed to be commanders.
    2. Depending on how good all the PWs are, we could see a lot of super friends decks showing up, especially in Brawl!
    3. That being said, I think WotC will be trying to get planeswalkers out in color combinations not already represented by commanders in Brawl
  5. So what does all of this mean for EDH?
    1. Ryan
    2. 1. Jaya
      2. Chandra
      3. Sorrin Markov
      1. Jace.. duh
      2. Saheeli
      3. Davriel Cane (Skeletor)
      4. Bonus: Ugin
    3. Zack
  6. What Planeswalkers are we most excited to see?
    1. Probably some common/uncommon PW, at the very least rare
    2. Every Pre-release kit has a FOIL stamped PW AND another foil stamped card
    3. Maybe some PW with no Ultimates, or maybe only minuses or only pluses
  7. A Planeswalker in every pack. What do we think this means?
3. War of the Spark
4. Summary - We are beyond hyped for both of these products.
5. And, as if the hype weren’t enough, we got a FREE preview card from WAR, given to us by Wizards of the Coast! If you want to make sure you get to see the preview card as soon as we can show you, the Subscribe button is waiting :)
