Ep 77 Community Spotlight:
1. Disclaimer: None of the #CMRLegends league games were recorded in my spreadsheet. I made the decision not to record them, not sure if it was the correct one, but it’s what I went with. I also didn’t record any 2 player games
  1. This has been a rough year for everyone, and I know a lot of folks might not have kept up with recording their games, just because it was just too much, and I’m sure many of our listeners out there just plain didn’t get to play very much magic this year. I know Ryan Peneff has internet consistency troubles, and that just made playing for him (at least much of the year) not very feasible. All that is to say, I hope that going over my stats for the year can maybe help folks at home live vicariously
  2. I compiled the data into a spreadsheet (huge shoutout to @dpkrausejr !)
    1. This was actually kinda fun, as it let me re-live some of the cool moments of the year.
  3. I recorded all the games on my phone, and then pretty much took 3-4 days to transfer them over in the last week.
  4. Try recording your games in 2021, it can be a bit of an inconvenience, but it does give you something to do while you’re waiting for your turn to come back around :)
2. Recording your own games
  1. How many total games do you think I played?
  2. 1. Have to do this one first, because the savvy math peeps at home will be able to deduce this by the answers to the following questions
  3. How many games do you think were in person vs on webcam?
  4. How many different places do you think I played at?
3. Location, Location, Location
  1. How many different decks do you think I played?
  2. 1. Decks and how many times I played them
    2. 1. Including deck win percentages
4. Deck Diversity
  1. How many different opponents?
  2. Who did I play with the most? (besides Zack)
  3. How many games did I play with Zack?
  4. Who has the best win percentage against me?
5. Opponents
  1. Which did I play against the most? And how many times?
  2. 1. Go over chart in detail
6. Commanders played against
  1. Games played over time (chart)
  2. Number of players per game 3,4,5,6
  3. Percentage that the player that went first won? (again, thanks for including this Dan!)
  4. My overall win percentage?
7. Other stats
  1. This was such a crazy and DIFFERENT year for playing Commander. Want to give a huge shoutout to Jon Rowny and Adam Christ, as I really think SpellTable made Commander as good as it could possibly be this year.
8. Stats as compared to last year
  1. MF Austin, and being Guests of Channel Fireball
  2. GP Zack’s House
  3. Remembering that final in person game with Amelia and her boyfriend Thomas (Weird to think that was the last time I was inside our LGS on 3/5/2020)
  4. Playing on stream with the creators of SpellTable
    1. Maybe I show my notes for this game, and we see how much Zack remembers it?
  5. Streaming with Andy and Coyle from Guardian project
  6. Command Fest Online 2, shoutout to Channel Fireball
  7. Getting to play a game with Josh and Amber
  8. Getting to play a game with Craig Blanchette and a Patron
  9. Streaming with Schmandrew Art
    1. Mike’s Record - https://open.spotify.com/album/6B5kSbXpiXpWuwpWfCDMJC?si=TOh8U6-3T5Ke-mwIrRIcmw
  10. Streaming with Andy Hull and Mike Carrozza
  11. Getting to stream with our patrons every week!
9. Cool Moments
Main Topic - Ryan's Stats for 2020
1. Do you record your own games? Do you think you might want to next year? Let us know! What did you think about this show? Was it interesting to hear stats about Ryan’s 2020 experience? If you were recording your own games, what are some other stats you’d like to know?

Ep 74 Community Spotlight:
1. Magic players can be hard to shop for, and I should know, because I am one. We often take for granted what we like in Magic, but to our friends, family, and partners, it can be a mystery.
  1. This is often times what will get suggested to a non-magic-player, should they go into an LGS and ask “What should I get for the MtG player in my life?”
  2. As a Magic player, I think I genuinely don’t like to get sealed product all that much. I think sealed product is a lot better for newer players, or younger players, as they may not know what they want yet.
    1. Booster packs
    2. 1. Draft Boosters
      2. Collector Boosters
      3. Avoid loose boosters of very old sets!
      1. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/commander-legends-preconstructed-decks
      2. This can be great, but you want to make sure you’re not getting the MtG player something they already have
    3. Precons, like the Commander decks
      1. https://cardgamebase.com/zendikar-rising-gift-edition-bundle-contents/
      2. These can be good for newer players
      3. I like that it has a collector’s booster in it
      4. I do like the storage box
    4. Holiday Gift Boxes
  3. Sealed product can fall into a couple of different categories
2. Sealed Product, Boosters, Boxes, etc
  1. This one can be tricky too, because many magic players are kinda “picky” about what kind of accessories they use. Might be a good idea to slide into the DMs of someone you know who plays Magic with your gift-receiver

Ep 70 Community Spotlight:
1. How great does it feel to have your brand new deck in your hands? I think this is a common experience that most Commander players can relate to.
2. 1. Sidenote: As a parent, I 100% see this feeling in my children. Whatever the newest toy is, that’s the one they love the most (even if it’s a stuffed animal or action figure that is 30 years old, and has been in a box in the garage)
  2. 1. Maybe there’s a lesson we can learn in Magic here.
    2. 1. Maybe the fact that a deck is new is enough, like maybe it doesn’t have to be stuffed to the gills with powerful/expensive cards? I know I certainly get excited shuffling up the precon decks every year.
      2. Maybe also the Commander Legends League that we are going to do is going to scratch this itch?
      3. Also, just sitting down to a draft at our LGS, like “What am I going to open?” And which of these cards that I’m drafting can I add to my already existing decks?
  1. I think for me, it’s less, and this may be why I don’t upgrade decks as often. This may also just be a function of having a LOT of cards lying around. Maybe also because the anticipation of seeing how a particular card will work in a deck is less than seeing if a whole deck will come together.
3. Can we get a similar feeling by upgrading a deck?
  1. For me, it’s kinda like Christmas, (or any other gift giving holiday/occasion) . Those presents are just sitting there under the tree, for weeks, and all you can do is just imagine what they are gonna be. It’s like a much longer version of “The Marshmallow test”
  2. 1. Heck, Christmas is like a year long exercise in delayed gratification. How many times have I told my kids, maybe for Christmas, or maybe for your birthday?
    1. Idea phase is usually pretty short, but can last a few days. You read an article/watch a video, and it percolates at the back of your mind for a bit
      1. Tangent: I’ve been trying to really pare down the cards I order for a new deck
      2. Specifically, I try to order less in number, and very much less in value.

        Many contributing factors. I didn’t own a shuffle-drazi, and it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time

I was buying it from my LGS, and I pretty much just wanted an excuse to spend money there

It felt like an effect that I 100% wanted in this deck, and there really aren’t many others like this (I don’t really plan on ever casting it in this deck, unless something has gone horribly wrong)

For me, there is some sort of threshold that a card must cross, in order for me to order it. Oftentimes, if the card is like $0.50 or less, and I don’t own other copies of it, I’ll pretty much order it, if I think it’s really important to the decks game plan. The opposite of this is also true, like I ordered an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.
    2. The brewing phase, this is usually only a couple of hours, but is often revisited again once I get the cards physically in front of me
  3. For me the whole process, from idea to maiden voyage takes quite a bit of time.
4. Delayed gratification
  1. I wonder why I feel this way? For me, I think an analogy might be dominoes, like you spend all this time setting up this elaborate Rube Goldberg machine, and you can’t wait to kick it off, and watch it all happen!
  2. I find it interesting that after all this work, the payoff is so quick
5. From the minute I put the final sleeve on the deck, I have this intense desire to play it. And sometimes it’s days before I get a chance
  1. All this lead-up, or buildup, what happens if you just don’t like the deck?
  2. 1. What is it that you don’t like about the deck?
    2. 1. Play pattern
      2. Not fun to play against? Opponents got a little salty?
      3. Didn’t live up to your ideas/expectations?
      4. Is there a way to fix the deck and give it another go? Maybe the deck idea is good, but there’s another commander you can use?
      1. At the same time, if you do decide to dismantle it, don’t feel bad. This is a game, we play it to have fun, if you’re not having fun, see if the cards from that deck might have a better home somewhere else
    3. Give the deck at least a few games before you decide to dismantle it
    1. Don’t be complacent, think about cards in there that didn’t perform as well as you thought they might?
    2. Also, play it a few more times, maybe you just got an insane draw.
  3. What if the deck is awesome?
6. What to do with the deck post-maiden voyage?
Main Topic - That NEW Deck Feeling
1. Folks out in audience land, do you ever get that NEW deck feeling? Is it something you enjoy? Is your process from idea to maiden voyage short or longer? Did you enjoy this episode? Let us know because we want to give you what you want.
