    Episode 27: Don Was Jan 08, 2021
    Show notes

“If you understand the process of making records, the style of music doesn't matter. What matters is that whoever the artist is, that they're being for real, that they're opening up and letting out this part of their inner life that defies explanation, where words fail to convey the true depth of our inner emotional lives. We use art as a metaphor to communicate it. - Don Was

On today's episode of Comes a Time, Mike & Oteil welcome bass player and record producer Don Was, co-founder of the funk-rock band Was (not Was) and later a producer on countless albums with major artists including the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Don shares his philosophy when it comes to producing a record and the occasional star-struck moments that still appear when he thinks on his career. The three also discuss Phil Lesh’s incredibly unique bass style and Oteil’s approach to filling that role in Dead & Company, along with the connection to the music that comes through playing Grateful Dead songs.

Don Fagenson first became known to music audiences as a founding member of Was (Not Was), which he formed with childhood friend David Weiss in his hometown of suburban Detroit under the stage names Don Was and David Was. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Was (Not Was) released four studio albums that showcased their unique blend of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and dance music combined with satirical and unusual lyrics. Their 1988 album, What Up, Dog?, spawned the US and UK hit singles "Spy in the House of Love" and "Walk the Dinosaur." As an in-demand, highly acclaimed, and commercially successful producer since the late 1980s, Was has been honored with multiple Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award for his production work, which includes collaborations with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Brian Wilson, Ziggy Marley, and countless others. In 2012, he became the president of preeminent jazz label Blue Note Records.

    Episode 26: Jennifer Hartswick Jan 01, 2021
    Show notes

On today’s episode, Mike and Oteil chat with singer and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, best known for her work with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. Jennifer talks about performing in Trey's Beacon Jams live streamed series this fall, how it came together, and the details of what it felt like to do. She also discusses the fast-paced and quick-changing style of working with Trey and other members of Phish. She reminisces about growing up in Vermont, recording her recent trio album, Nexus, in Phish’s barn studio, and the camaraderie among Burlington musicians. Jennifer also shares how she and her entire family became interested in and practitioners of Reiki.

Jennifer Hartswick is one of the most refreshing new voices of the twenty-first century. A consummate performer, she thrills audiences as a vocalist, trumpeter, composer, lyricist and educator. She is equally at home singing soul, funk, pop and R&B, but her passion without question is jazz. At the age of 20 Jennifer was afforded the opportunity to join Trey Anastasio's new band, having already recorded on Story of the Ghost (Phish, 1998) and One Man's Trash (Trey Anastasio, 1998). She embraced the idea with open arms and began touring with him in 2001. In 2003 Jennifer released her own debut album; a soulful, horn laden party entitled Fuse. In 2018, she released a trio album, Nexus, recorded with Nick Cassarino and Christian McBride.

    Episode 25: Bob Roth Dec 23, 2020
    Show notes

“The analogy of an ocean, where you have choppy waves on the surface, which is constantly tumbled and the choppy waves on the surface are our thoughts, are our feelings up and down and our life up and down, up and down. Success, failure, happy, sad, love, hate, hot, cold, pleasure, pain. [...] Everyone, like an ocean, has turbulence on the surface. But at the depths of the ocean, it's pretty darn steady and silent. We all have within us that field everyone, whether we believe it, [...] it's not a question of believing.” - Bob Roth

Oteil & Mike welcome Bob Roth, renowned Transcendental Meditation teacher and CEO of the David Lynch Foundation. Bob, Mike, and Oteil talk all about meditation in this episode, specifically Transcendental Meditation (TM), which Mike practices twice a day and Bob has taught for over 45 years. Bob explains TM and how it can improve your wellbeing, how it has helped folks with a range of ailments, and shares some of the science behind what’s happening in your brain during meditation. The three discuss accessing similar moments of transcendence in other settings, like scuba diving or playing music, and escaping the seemingly endless condition of anxiety that many of us find ourselves in.

Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation leaders in America. Over the past 45 years, Bob has taught Transcendental Meditation to many thousands of people, and he is the author of the 2018 New York Times bestseller Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation. As CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, Bob has helped bring Transcendental Meditation to more than one million students in underserved schools in 35 countries, to military veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress and to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Bob also directs the Center for Health and Wellness, which is bringing meditation to Fortune 100 companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Bob is the host of the SiriusXM radio show Success Without Stress and has spoken about the “science of meditation" to industry leaders at gatherings such as Google Zeitgeist, the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Aspen Brain Conference, Wisdom 2.0 Conference, the Global Wellness Summit and CURA’s Unite To Cure at The Vatican.

Episode 23: The Evans Brothers Dec 11, 2020
    Show notes

This week, Oteil & Mike welcome brothers Alan and Neal Evans, primarily known as founding members of the Jazz-Funk trio Soulive along with guitar player Eric Krasno. Oteil first met Alan & Neal over 20 years ago, when the two were only 18 and 20 years old. Neal shares the details of his studio setup, the plethora of projects he’s been working on this year, including his own YouTube channel. He also recalls an emotional moment backstage in 2000 with Oteil, a mentor to him, which propels the group to discuss the driving desire to share their knowledge as musicians. Alan & Neal also tell the strange story of having the power shut off in the middle of their Berkfest performance, a blasphemy Oteil dubs “Soulive Interruptus,” and the four discuss festivals and performances aplenty throughout the years.

Brothers Alan and Neal Evans, on drums and Hammond B-3 organ, respectively, form two-thirds of the band Soulive. Rounding out the group is Eric Krasno on guitar. A funky instrumental trio, Soulive are all about danceable, organ-driven groove jazz. Their sound is a result of fusing the soul-jazz of the past with a modern hip-hop feel.

The band was formed in Buffalo, New York, in the late '90s when all three members were under age 25. However, each already had a substantial background in the jam band scene. Alan and Neal are former members of Moon Boot Lover, and Alan also played with the Greyboy Allstars. Soulive toured with and opened for a number of notables (including John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks, and Robben Ford) before headlining their own shows and releasing their introductory EP, Get Down, in 1999.

More recently, Alan Evans runs his own studio Iron Wax in Western Massachusetts, while touring with Matador! Soul Sounds, a band that he formed with guitarist Eddie Roberts from The New Mastersounds. Neal Evans has worked on film and television scores, as well as being an in-demand keyboardist both in the studio and on the road for a number of high profile artists.

    Episode 22: Jessica Kirson Dec 04, 2020
    Show notes

On this week’s episode, Mike & Oteil go unfiltered with Jessica Kirson, a powerhouse stand-up comedian and a dear friend of Mike’s ever since she offered him a break in the NYC comedy scene years ago. Jessica shares the trials and tribulations of therapy during COVID times, from attempts to heal past trauma through an underwhelming encounter with an excitable horse, to citrus- infused bongo sessions. She talks about listening in on therapy sessions her mother held in the basement of her house growing up, about being OK with never being OK, and the three share laughs over hemorrhoids, vibrators and getting way too riled up from the news.

Jessica Kirson is a New York- based standup comedian. In an era where only 10% of all touring comedians are female, Jessica stands out as one of the strongest comedians regardless of gender. As her friend Dave Attell says, “I’d hate to follow her.”

This year, Jessica will be featured playing herself on the HBO series Crashing with Pete Holmes. She recently served as a consultant, producer and writer as well as acted in Robert De Niro’s film “The Comedian.” She has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”, “The View, and “Kevin Can Wait.”

She was recently awarded “Best Female Comic” by the MAC association in New York City and received the prestigious Nightlife Award for “Best Stand-up Comedian.” And in her spare time, Jessica is a regular contributor to the “Howard Stern Show, where she produces and stars in prank calls for the program.

    Episode 21: Bill Walton Nov 27, 2020
    Show notes

“I just love reading about adventure and about history, biography, about why people succeed in life. And one of the overriding themes on the path to success is that as we're all chasing this dream, that when we come to the hurdles, when it seems like it's not going to happen, when the adversity is just overwhelming and just crushing us, somebody, some complete stranger will just come into your life, then all of a sudden give you that little boost, give you the edge, hand you ten dollars, open his hand, come with me. And that and that is what the Grateful Dead is all about.” - Bill Walton

In this episode of Comes a Time, Mike & Oteil are joined by the legendary former basketball player, sportscaster and beloved Deadhead, Bill Walton. Like the force of energy that he is, Bill takes the lead in the conversation, sharing stories about his mentors through his athletic career, the creative and exploratory environment of his childhood home, and finding purpose and possibilities through the Grateful Dead music and culture. Bill talks about his first Dead show in 1967 at 15 years old, when he says “I don’t remember how we got in, because we didn’t have any money, but somehow we got up to the front row, and I never left.” Bill unexpectedly (or perhaps, exactly as expected) turns the tables and interviews Oteil, at which point we go deep on Oteil’s singing career, transitioning between bands, camaraderie in Dead & Co, and the possibility of bringing his afro back. The three also discuss Oteil’s, Steve Martin’s and Jerry Garcia’s banjo playing. On a more serious note, but equally inspiring, we hear about Bill’s long and arduous journey of learning how to speak, starting at age twenty-eight, after suffering a lifelong speech impediment, for which he now coaches young people with the same issues.

Bill Walton was born in downtown San Diego. The family quickly moved to La Mesa, The Jewel of The Hills, where his Mom, Gloria, still lives, in the same house now, for 67 years. He exploded on the international basketball scene while attending Helix High School. Bill went to UCLA as a scholarship player for John Wooden, winning three successive NCAA Player of the Year awards and helping UCLA to consecutive undefeated NCAA championships (1972, 1973), and a record 88-game winning streak. Bill is a member of the NCAA All Time Basketball Team. Bill was selected as the #1 overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. Walton and the Portland Trail Blazers won the NBA Championship in 1977, earning the NBA Finals MVP award that season. He was the NBA MVP the next season. Bill won another NBA title, playing with the Boston Celtics in 1986. He was named the NBA 6th Man of the Year that season. Bill is a member of the NBA All Time Team. Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Bill is also in numerous other Halls of Fame, including the HOF of USA High Schools, The NCAA, the NCAA Academic All America, for UCLA, Pac-12, Oregon, San Diego, California, New England, the Boys & Girls Club, Guinness, and the Grateful Dead.

When Bill could no longer play basketball, he started a most unlikely career as a multimedia broadcaster, a career that has now spanned 30 years. Bill has worked for every major network and platform, and has been with ESPN for many years now. Bill is a multi-Emmy Award winning on-air talent. Bill is also a New York Times Best Selling author, with his memoir, Back From The Dead. Bill is a huge music fan, and with...

    Episode 19: Dave Schools Nov 13, 2020
    Show notes

Mike & Oteil welcome legendary bass player Dave Schools of Widespread Panic. Dave shares his approach to consuming media and how his political views have evolved since his childhood in Richmond, Virginia, as the three cover the current political climate and the polarization we see today. The conversation takes a turn away from current events to the wonders of music, as they discuss Col. Bruce Hampton and his influence, how dancing styles differ between Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers fans, and Dave shares stories from growing up and going to Dead shows. The three bond over their appreciation for Frank Zappa.

David Allen Schools is a bass player and founding member of American rock band Widespread Panic. He is also a record producer, songwriter and journalist with articles published in a wide variety of music magazines. Schools lives in Sonoma County, California with his two dogs; when not on tour he likes to garden. Schools is an innovator on the bass with a non-traditional approach that has given him a unique voice on the instrument. With his primary band, Widespread Panic, he plays a six-string Modulus Quantum 6 bass that affords him a wide range of sounds that are further enhanced by an envelope filter and octave pedal. Influenced by an early desire to play drums and childhood piano lessons, Schools has deviated from, though not abandoned, the established rhythm role of the bass and created a more melodic, improvisational style that has been referred to as “lead bass.”

    Episode 18: Jonny Podell Nov 06, 2020
    Show notes

In today’s episode, Mike and Oteil welcome Jonny Podell, veteran music agent whose clients have included the Allman Brothers Band, Cyndi Lauper, Peter Gabriel, George Harrison, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, among many others. Jonny shares tales of debaucherous nights with musical greats and the dark depths of his addiction. He also describes his awakening, discovering meditation, and finding sobriety, joy, and inspiration.

Jonny Podell consistently set the trends and created pathways that others have built careers on. In 1974, Podell’s collaboration with his mentor and longtime friend Bill Graham, produced the historic trek by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young—the first stadium tour ever, selling out 50,000 seats in every city and establishing a new way to present rock ‘n’ roll. As Head of Music for William Morris Agency, and then as Worldwide Head of Music for International Creative Management, Podell continued to add to his roster of stars, discovering illusionist David Blaine and signing Peter Gabriel. Evolution Talent was the next step for Podell and his new partner, David Zedeck. Together they helped guide the careers of pop sensations ‘NSync, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. The dynamic duo booked stadium tours for all three artists at the same time. Podell also created two ongoing festivals—WANEE Festival in Northern Florida and PEACH Festival in Scranton Pennsylvania—for The Allman Brothers. These franchises continue to generate income for the founding artists after they have stopped touring.

Podell has always drawn inspiration from his idol, boxing great Muhammad Ali. In 2012, that inspiration was fertilized by a simple meditation which grew into a full-on spiritual awakening. Podell has never been the same since. Podell launched into a personal journey of consciousness and truth, searching for a way to best serve the world. What has emerged like a phoenix rising from the ashes is a zealous mission “to serve existing spiritual teachers, healers, and consciousness-based artists by expanding their outreach to a wider audience through events, workshops, lectures, books, live-streaming, education, and media. Podell is passionate about raising their collective visibility and impact.
