The Lord invites the children of Israel to have a special experience with Him, but asks them to sanctify themselves in preparation for all that the Lord wanted to give them. In our lives the Lord wants us to have powerful manifestations of His power and love as well, but He likewise expects something from us.

When the people understood the blessings that the Lord wanted to pour out upon them, they were anxious to do anything that was asked of them. Of course they would fall short, as we all do. But God was requiring their efforts and repentance, not their perfection.
