If you’d like to support the podcast and all the work that I do then you can! Just head on over to patreon.com/comealongfortheridepodcast and sign up. From as little as a cup of coffee a month, you can help me keep this podcast going. There are many tiers that you can choose from and if everyone who listens gave only $5 per month, it would make a massive positive difference to me. There is a tier in there for a small business subscription just like the one Peter Papp took up from Peter and the Herd, this is the one where your business gets a mention each week on the podcast. Peter works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. One of our small business subscribers for the podcast is the HeartHorse Box. HeartHorse was created by friends Tista and Charlotte who found a beautiful spot to place themselves in the horse world. They have created a safe online community environment outside the noisy world of social media where you can subscribe and dive in and speak openly with heart-minded conscious horse people of all disciplines and breeds. This includes live seminars and classes from equine experts from all areas of the equestrian world. They also have the beautiful HeartHorse Box Subscription, I do love this one as it is centred around you, the conscious horse person receiving nourishing gifts for you as HeartHorse understand that you are already taking amazing care of your horse and want to make sure you are doing the same for yourself. I am thrilled to let you know that if you go to hearthorse.us and use the code EDENRIVER you will receive a 25% discount on your first month of the HeartHorse Community Membership. You may also like to check out their HeartHorse podcast it’s another great free resource from the HeartHorse team. You may even find the episode where I was a guest on their podcast talking about my life with horses and how this podcast and the conscious horse movement came about. In this episode I spoke with Alexandra Kurland. Alex is one of the first people in the world, over 30 years ago to bring clicker training to the horse world. In this 30 years she has refined her methods and learned to teach humans in a way that horses love. She is such an amazing teacher as you will hear. Alex says her ability to teach was taught to her by the horses she has worked with, they all taught her to step back, break it down and take her time, and to not be afraid to take it right back to the beginning if need be. As you can imagine as one of the originals in the horse world her wealth of knowledge of clicker training is extraordinary. I am so please to be able to bring you this conversation with a true legend of her field. Anu is a person of colour within the horse wold and I’ve been looking to open this conversation as the horse world can be a judgemental place for people with white skin let alone someone with brown skin and I wanted to hear how that has been for Anu and what we can learn from her experience and how we can make positive change on the racism in the horse world. As expected Anu is a really interesting human and we speak not only of racism in the horse world but about Anu and her accomplished career and her work and the positive change she is making. The wonderful Lauren Arcay from Canada has joined the team and is doing the reaching out to guests for me and the podcast. The relief and joy I have of seeing a booking for a podcast interview come through into my emails is the best. So thank you Lauren for all you are doing it is so appreciated. In this episode, thanks to Lauren, I speak with Dr Sue Dyson. When I interviewed Dr Ann Bondi from The Saddle Research Trust she suggested I speak with Sue and I’m so glad that we found the time to speak with her because oh my she is out to change the horse world in a wonderful way. She has developed a tool on how to recognise the 24 behaviours indicating pain in the ridden horse. And she is backed by all the science you could possibly ever need. I could read out all Dr Sue Dyson has achieved in her lifetime thus far but it would probably take me 20 minutes to get through it all, and I’m not exaggerating! I’ll shorten it somewhat to give you an idea. Sue is a qualified vet who went on to specialise in clinical orthopaedics and lameness and poor performance in horses. Sue has been awarded fellowships PhD’s and is a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Sue has lectured internationally and published widely on equine orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. She has published more than 310 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse. Sue is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Equine Veterinary Journal, Equine Veterinary Education and acts as a regular peer reviewer for a large number of journals. Sue was been a long-standing member of Council of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is a past President. She has also been a long-standing member of the Board of the World Equine Veterinary Association and Vice-President. Sue has been awarded far too many prizes to list and has been made an honorary member of Societa Italiana Veterinari Per Equini (SIVE), Italy. Sue was inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame. Sue also holds the Instructors and Stable Managers Certificates of the British Horse Society (BHSI) and has competed at advanced level in both horse trials and show jumping, producing horses that have subsequently competed successfully at the Olympic Games and World Equestrian Games. She is a former veterinary advisor to British Eventing. Sue is veterinary advisor to the Saddle Research Trust and to Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre. And that folks, is her CV cut down to about 5%. Sue as you can see is not only a vet but she is an accomplished horsewoman who knows that to find the real issue with a horse you must do the basic check that most vets do then you have to see the horse ridden to see if the rider has any biomechanical issues that are effecting the horse, then she may even ride the horse herself to see if those issues are still present with a balanced rider like herself. Sue’s tool that she has created will save you money on vet visits, it will give you an educated opinion for your vet to consider, and it may even help to educate your vet on how to deal with pain in horses. Sue has created a tool that we as horse owners need as we know there is an issue with our horse but no vet can find it. Well this tool can. I hope you enjoy this talk and I really hope you can spread the word about Sue’s creation as horses all over the world will benefit if you do. This is a real block for me being able to get back to weekly episodes on the podcast. Your monthly subscription makes my job here so much easier. In this episode I speak with Ginger Gaffney. Ginger is a horse trainer and author. She wrote and amazing book called Half Broke. It was Paul Szauter from Equisec who recommended this book to me so thanks Paul, I bought it on audible and listened to it twice. For those who know my background in years gone by in Equine Assisted Counselling, this book is such a gem about the horse human relationship. The book is the true story of Ginger’s work on an alternative to prison ranch where she gets a phone call from residents who are part of the horse team who have horses that are dangerous and aggressive to the point of physical harm to the humans feeding them. Ginger heads out there and helps out. This book tells the story of the residents and horses that Ginger helps and how they grow and change together, beautifully wound with the telling of Ginger’s own story from her childhood. And as happens so many times when working with horses and humans in this way, Ginger found that she needed to be here helping these people and horses just as much as they needed her. She does not get paid for this work. I loved this book as I said before. Please read it or please listen to it on audible. It shows just how powerful the horse human relationship is. I believe it’s one of the most powerful and beautiful things on the planet. And reading this book shows me that I may just be right. Ginger is a pleasure to speak with, I was so happy to find out more about some of the people in the book, where they are now, did they make it or not. Ginger still helps out at the ranch when she can get there, due to Covid it’s been difficult. And I will be keeping an eye out for her next book that she is working on now. Bex has an interesting life story of working as a customs drug detector at the airport and then in senior intelligence roles for New Zealand law enforcement agencies. Bex is a wonderful trainer who even though working in positive reinforcement, or clicker training, supports and learns from many styles of training. I love her open mind and heart and her ability to put the horse first by understanding that even though she knows an awful lot, she is still a student of the horse as we all are. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. In this episode I spoke with horse trainer and behaviouralist Chris Irwin. Thanks to Nina who on Instagram told me about Chris, once I took one look at his website I asked for an interview, I knew he’d have some gems for us all. Chris grew up in a home that was not safe and as a sensitive child honed his skills in reading body language like so many of us have done from these types of upbringing. He also learned that the lack of congruence was not safe either, what people are saying and their actions were not aligned, this does not allow us to relax, we cannot rest in our nervous system, we are living in our fight flight mode. We have choices in this situation as a child, fight, leave or shut down. A lot of people I know chose to shut down. Chris was brave enough to leave and this is what eventually led him to a life with horses. When Chris started working with horses people told him that it was not like he was learning to train horses, it looked like he was remembering horses. I believe this is the skills that he honed in his early life in a not safe environment about body language. Horses spoke his language and he spoke theirs. I have always believed that as horse people we are doing the best we can with the information we have, this is why I started the podcast, to get more information out into the world so that when we know better we can do better. There are some great gems in this conversation from Chris about body language that can help us do better. To connect with Chris please follow these linkswebsiteFacebook

In this episode I speak with Paul Szauter and Paul is not a horse person! Paul is a scientist. He is actually the Chief Scientific Officer of EquiSec who are one of the few places in the world you can test your horse for PSSM2. Recently I was made aware of a disease called PSSM1 in a friends horse, as she is my horse, Gypsy’s half-sister I got her tested as well as she was exhibiting some of the symptoms. Gypsy came back negative but as I am who I am and I do what I do, then my interest was peaked. And this happened because as I asked more and more people about PSSM1 I realised there was little to no awareness of this condition. So I decided to find someone who did have knowledge. This is how I came across Paul and his work. Most of the podcasts that I do are of value to share as they can support changes to training and handling of horses all over the world. This podcast is one of the most important ones for you to share as every single horse person in the world needs to be made aware of this disease and if you are ever buying a horse, this test needs to be done if your breed is on the long list that is knows to have had the disease. Together we can make a difference by talking about it with other horse owners and understanding the symptoms to look out for. This is especially important for trainers to be aware of as the gait abnormalities is something they will easily see when working with PSSM2 horses. So have a listen to the podcast, take it all in, and then please share and open our horse world up to PSSM 1 and 2 and let’s make a positive difference to the lives of horses.
