Auburn's firing of Gus Malzahn shakes up its recruiting fortunes. Maybe that's a good thing? Dec 14, 2020
    Show notes

The Auburn Tigers are paying a hefty buyout to part ways with coach Gus Malzahn just a few days before the Early Signing Period. It might send what was already the No. 42 ranked recruiting class in 2021 up in smoke, but the payoff — according to Keith Niebuhr — could mean top-5 contention in the future.

Top247 WR Emeka Egbuka could be another one-that-got-away for the West Coast Dec 10, 2020
    Show notes

Emeka Egbuka, the No. 1 WR in the class of 2021, will announce a commitment between Washington, Oklahoma, and Ohio State on Friday. After being rejected by Urban Meyer, Texas is in an awkward position with Tom Herman Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

Texas brass performed a coaching search without having a vacancy. Now that top target Urban Meyer has said no, the Longhorns find themselves in a horrible situation with fourth-year head coach Tom Herman (who has plenty of beef with Meyer that makes this story all the more juicy). Should Texas cut its losses, the bill will be $25 million. Or the Longhorns can move on with Herman as a lame duck. Neither option sounds nearly as Meyer, but there's no going back now.

    South Carolina's hiring of Shane Beamer is high-risk, high-reward Dec 07, 2020
    Show notes

The 43-year-old Shane Beamer has never even been a coordinator, but he's got loads of experience under a few of college football's best coaches — Lincoln Riley, Kirby Smart, Steve Spurrier, plus think about whose household he grew up in. That rolodex plus Beamer's love for the program and the vouching of the Gamecock greats who he recruited and coached were enough to land him the gig. Trey and Brad Crawford discuss the pros and cons of the hiring and what success would look like for Beamer.

BYU and Coastal Carolina put together a game at the last minute and we wish it was always this easy Dec 04, 2020
    Show notes

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, BYU's once-vaunted schedule fell apart. But the No. 13 Cougars suddenly have a great matchup on the docket in No. 18 Coastal Carolina, who just had their game vs. Liberty canceled. That it was scheduled four days in advance of the game flies in the face of the sport's logic of scheduling out non-conference games by 10 years. Trey brings in Matt Brown, the publisher of the popular Extra Points newsletter, to talk about BYU's yearly scheduling conundrum and, more broadly, why college football scheduling can't always be this fun and easy.
