On this powerful episode of Club Shay Shay, host Shannon Sharpe sits down with Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum artist, entrepreneur, and Louisiana legend Kevin Gates for one of the most vulnerable and spiritually charged conversations of his career.
The episode opens with Kevin Gates leading a prayer in Arabic, setting the tone for a deeply introspective discussion. Gates reflects on being born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge by his grandparents, crediting them for instilling respect, discipline, and a relentless work ethic. He shares how his grandfather remains the motivational voice in his head and opens up about the pain of losing his grandmother just before performing in Baton Rouge, as well as the backlash he faced online while grieving.
Gates dives into his complicated relationship with his mother, discussing estrangement, healing conversations, and how understanding her limitations helped heal his inner child. He explains how being treated as the “black sheep” fueled his overachieving mindset and desire for validation. Shannon and Kevin also discuss trauma, including Gates’ admission of childhood sexual abuse, the disbelief he faced, and how that trauma shaped his fear, violence, and eventual path toward healing and accountability.
The conversation turns to fatherhood, masculinity, and mental health, as Gates explains how he created open, safe spaces for his children and other men to heal. He reveals how making his song “Protect Children” forced him to confront unresolved trauma and why music remains one of his most powerful tools for release and purpose.
Gates reflects on his troubled youth, time in juvenile detention and prison, hustle culture, and the lessons that ultimately redirected his life. He shares insights on the music industry, founding Bread Winners Records, and learning from legends like Master P, Boosie, Birdman, Jim Jones, Lil Wayne, and the Young Money era. Gates also discusses career highs and lows, including his 2016 Grammy nomination while incarcerated, touring, collaborations, and his love for performing.
The episode explores Gates’ dramatic physical transformation, spirituality, fasting, Ramadan, discipline, and self-improvement. He opens up about depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, and the importance of speaking up rather than suffering in silence. Gates speaks candidly about love, marriage, trust, faith, and how healing his relationship with God transformed his relationships.
The conversation concludes with reflections on fatherhood, legacy, spirituality, and Gates’ goals for himself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually—leaving listeners with a powerful message about turning pain into purpose.
