Skip Bayless joins Shannon Sharpe for a conversation about their legendary seven-year run together on Undisputed, the origins of their on-air chemistry, and the moments that made their partnership one of sports media’s most talked-about debates.
Skip and Shannon look back at how they first connected on First Take, when Skip saw Shannon’s potential as a debate partner and decided he wanted him to join him in Los Angeles to launch Undisputed on FS1. They discuss the preparation, competitiveness, work ethic, and chemistry that helped the show become a major part of sports television.
They revisit some of Undisputed’s biggest moments, including their debates surrounding Colin Kaepernick and the social issues across America, as well as the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and the NFL. Skip remembers the unforgettable Cowboys playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers and the show’s massive ratings following the game.
Skip and Shannon also revisit their famous Tom Brady debate. They explain their competitive personalities and why the disagreement did not immediately end their relationship. The conversation then turns to why Undisputed ultimately ended, Skip’s reaction to Shannon leaving, the decision-making behind the scenes at Fox Sports, and Shannon’s transition into Club Shay Shay and Nightcap. Skip explains why he believes their chemistry was difficult to recreate and how Shannon’s career evolved after Undisputed.
The debate continues with LeBron James, Michael Jordan, the GOAT conversation, the NBA Finals, Scottie Pippen, Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Jayson Tatum, Jalen Brunson, and the future of the Los Angeles Lakers. Skip also shares his opinions on LeBron’s move to Philadelphia.
Skip and Shannon discuss the Dallas Cowboys, discussing Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Jimmy Johnson, and the Cowboys’ championship history. Skip explains why his lifelong connection to the Cowboys makes their success and failures so emotional.
Skip also opens up about covering Michael Jordan and the 1998 Chicago Bulls, the famous final shot against the Utah Jazz, and his favorite memories as a sports journalist. He reflects on his career covering the NFL, NBA Finals, Super Bowls, and World Series.
Later, Skip shares a deeply personal story about growing up in Oklahoma and the Black woman who helped raise him. He explains how she influenced his life and his perspective on race. He also discusses his marriage, why they chose not to have children, his strict diet, and whether he has any regrets about his career. Finally, Skip discusses his future in sports media, his Gridiron show with Aqib Talib, and the rise of digital and direct-to-consumer sports media.
